Nandini enrolled in school with great enthusiasm and was willing to surmount any obstacles placed in her way between her and school.

Now what has changed?

There have been many opinions floating on the forum

Some say she is not interested because she has seen only Kundan and some said she was scared of teacher's scolding and some said she is bored.

Going by the sequences which lead to her wanting to school

Attitude towards education from negative to positive

The only exposure she had to school was through Kundan and his friends and that is hardly inspiring.
So she felt education is unnecessary and does no good for anyone. That's what she told Pabbo when that girl expressed to go to school

Then she saw Kamili wanting to read books and had her telling about the good that books do.
But nothing ever happened after that.Neither did Kamili volunteer to teach that girl nor that girl asked Kamili

Then her fairy god mother Chudailsa taught about some uses of education her twin brother gave her pen so she became favorable towards education.and that is just a begining and very much interested in reading and writing. In Shivam she saw a much better example of the beneficial effects of school than she saw in Kundan. So she realised that school does some good.

We have seen her attitude towards education changing gradually. She found the sight of Kundan sitting at his table and doing his home work so enticing.
There was a desire in her to see herself doing the same thing.

Kundan was the reason for being put off by school and education but she has come a long way from there and finds the sight Kundan with books absolutely beautiful 😆

So there is absolutely no doubt about her desire to get educated. She is very much interested.

Then opportunity came her way all thanks to Akheraj wanting to look good in the eyes of villagers so she got to go to school.

Then what went wrong?
But once the teacher started it all went wrong.
I haven't started my education in regional language so I don't know whether Indian languages are taught this way straight way teaching them consonants.
The teacher started writing on the board without explaining what it is all about.
That was very uninspiring way to start teaching a bunch of students who have not seen the inside of the schools before that day.
The worst thing was that the teacher didn't even turn to look at the children to see whether they are with him or not.
He just turned around and said no fooling and that's it.
She tried to follow that and couldn't.Then she was troubled looked around her to see if there is anyone who is facing problems
So now she is put off by school

Nandini's reaction to her problems at school?

Nandini is a bright girl the way she learns may be different from others and class room blackboard kind of teaching may not work with her.

Instead of sitting and getting depressed that school is not working for her and her dream is going sour she unfortunately resorted to bunk and play with friends and lie about it in school.

Looks like she doesn't know how to handle this problem and who to discuss this.
None of them at home have gone to school except for Kundan. Urmi seems to have gone to school but doesn't look like she can help her there. Her knowledge of the world seems to have come from TV shows😛

---------------
Class room - Regimented form of schooling may not work for Nandini at this stage. She needs personalised teaching till she catches up with the rest of them and is able to handle school on her own

More importantly the teacher needs to be innovative.

Both school and home play an equal role in keeping a child in school.

Sometimes even if the school is not that great kids go because they know that they have to go so they finish schooling because everyone at home are educated and that is the way of life like it is for most of the middle class people.

Her bunking school is her way of protesting on how things are going on at school.

Here in Nandini's case neither home nor school are favorable for education.that's what VO said.

Nandini is serious about getting educated but she needs more help there.Teacher should change his ways

---------
One more thing about generalising statement that girls are more serious about studies. How right is that?

Who says girls are more serious about studies? Aren't there girls who only like to think of new dresses jewelry cooking boy friends etc and school and education being last thing on their mind?
Who says that girls are attentive and are focused?
May be they don't bunk school in a brazen manner like Nandini but that doesn't mean girls are all good and serious and are naturally inclined to be serious about education.

-----------------

Nandini was disinterested in school because of the atmosphere at home and the environment and the school going kids she met are not really worth following

Then she had an opposite experience which changed her thinking and attitude.

So she could have easily told herself that this chudailsa and her son didn't belong in her world neither did she belong in their world and left it at that and should have stuck to her own opinion about education and schooling but she didn't.

She made a choice there which no one around her made.
She decided to get educated.
She grabbed the first opportunity that came her way.

Now she needs help to ensure that her dream of school life education doesn't become a night mare.

The thing is Nandini doesn't have a clear idea of why school is important or is there a dream to be pursued?
When she looked at Kundan - she thought school was useless. Kamli said books are great but that didn't mean anything to Nandini either. Then Anandi / Shivam inspired her in a completely different way and she felt excited about going to school. So when she got a chance through Akhi, she grabbed it.

However, Nandini's expectation of what school does was based on the practical application of education in life, told to her by kundan kamli shivam or Anandi.

What nobody has told this girl is that to make use of education in life , one needs to first learn basics. This was meant to be the teacher's job who straight went into teaching barakhadi. He should have told some stories, given a background on why education is important, why it takes so long to study, what are the methods of studies eyc.

She is bored because she can't connect. That's all.

The question is if she didn't like school why did she lie? She could have told either Mangala or Kushore and they could have digged deep into her problem to be able to motivate her.

I remember as a child there were often days when I didn't want to go to school. And my parents used to make continous efforts to tell me why schooling is important. Often during Parents teacher meeting my mom would tell my teachers about my interests and they would develop me accordingly. Lot of hard work goes in educating a child both by parents and teachers.

So Nandini's case is very normal. Lets see how it shapes.

She is very sure about wanting education.
She knows now school is the way to get what she wants.
But now she needs help with school.

She overcame so many obstacles put in her way to school.

Now she feels that all those troubles she has to undergo every day to reach school are not worth what she is getting in school.

Mangala cannot help her in this because she herself has never seen in the insides of a school.Nimboli knows that.

Teacher - needs to create that air about himself to let kids know that he can be approached in case of problems. This Kishore seems to be someone who is full of good intentions but he is equally ignorant as Nimboli in this matter.

Thing was that she looked around and saw all the others writing down what all the teacher was saying and she couldn't do that. So she kind of convinced herself that the problem is with her alone and she is kind of disappointed with herself too.

She enrolled in school against all resistance she came across. Now it is a matter of pride. How can she admit that she is not liking school that too after all the flourish with which she enrolled .That amounts to accepting failure😆

Atmosphere at home as well as at school is not very conducive to learning or pursuing academics as far as she is concerned.
Nobody in her home cares if she goes to school or not.At the most they will mock at her for wanting to go to school.
It is not the illiteracy at home which makes things difficult for her but their attitude towards education.

Right now the blame rests on teacher more than her.She was ready to overcome obstacles and come to school to learn and it doesn't become teacher's duty to make it worth all her troubles.
Teacher should know the background his students.

Her problem is not unusual
So many of us had faced this problem when we were students.
For some kids the regimentation and rules are a big put off even though they are good and for some kids class room teaching may not work at all.
In case of Nandini bunking school is an outward manifestation of a total system failure.
Probably they will deal with the problems that make kids specially girls in rural areas drop out of school

Yes currently the problem lies with the teacher more than her. Time will tell how it all shapes

The problem lies with creatives. They cannot show any profession - teaching included realistically. The best so far had been Anandi's adult education classes and then Shiv's explanations to Amol about evaporation etc. Dadisa's rotation and revolution was also good - but it did not make enough impact because this was too basic for the class she was studying - children in much lower classes know about these things.
Coming to Nimboli and the methods of teacher - I already posted my views in some other thread. Nowhere in schools the teacher goes straight to barahkhadi - a process students can learn only after getting familiar - both oral and written - about all the vowels and consonants. Hindi varnmala is vast and takes time to learn because of matras anuswar and visarg etc. Students starting school gets used to school discipline and basic knowledge of language etc. at the right time. Older students going first time to school should be treated with an approach similar to adult education. They are familiar of many words because their vocabulary is vast compared to a 4 years old starting nursery class. But they are not aware of school discipline and "boring" details of language/maths etc. However, due to their age - they can learn fast if the method becomes interesting and innovative. Some practical approach, some charts/models/alphabet toys etc. would help draw their attention. The boring regime should start only when the students grasp simple things like - to spell out a word they first need to recognise alphabets individually and then know correct application of matras etc. For maths also similar approach will yield better result.

Nimboli was shown to go to school only for one day - it is not clear for how many days she is bunking school and telling lies. I don't think it is motivational problem or she is affected by taunts of Harki and Kundan. It is mostly because she likes to play with her friends and this going to school has come as a convenient ruse to get so much time to be with friends (how Pampo gets that time is still a mystery - is not she supposed to be busy with household work and a cruel mother in law 😆). Knowing creatives - it is all about drama - they will not deal with real educational problems and more importantly - any real solution to the problems.

I think they wanted to show that problem lies with the system too.
So they made the teacher inefficient despite his good intentions.

Through Anandi's story they showed how dropping out of school has impacted her life and how lack of education made things difficult for her and thus she identifying the deficits in society and try to change the people's mindsets.

Through Nandini's story they are tackling system mainly the male dominated society the failure of govt systems to reach people.

They are showing how hostile or rather people unfriendly systems can impact growth of an individual.

Had the teacher been more imaginative and focused on personalising or customising according to the needs of the children there wouldn't be school drop outs.

Most of these children came from uneducated backgrounds and their parents don't really care whether they attend school or not or whether they are learning something or not. When they get to know that kids are bunking school and not learning anything parents also tell them to stop if the kids are not interested in school and send them to work in fields or kitchen depending upon the gender.

That's why the drop out rate is high.

In educated households parents take care of children's individual needs these days.I find more and more teachers leaving the responsibility to the parents of their teachers in the name of assignments.

Here who can Nandini discuss her problem with?
Mangala may tell her not to bunk school and she may give some peanuts as incentive.Other than that she can't do much. World of school and education alien to her.
Kundan - He can help her a bit but that all depends on his moods and what he needs from Nandini.
Akheraj Harki are not even worth talking about.

In case of Nandini her motivation alone is not enough it takes a lot of support from family as well as teacher to keep her in school.
I think the VO said it all.

i agree wid u.
@bold i also said same thing in one of my posts in WU thread after the epi aired. that nowhere it started from barahkhadi but it starts from vowels etc like A,B,C in english.
2 me it luked like kishore thinks that nandini knew abt basic like oder kids bcoz oder kids don't've any prob in writing.
they din't show if Ni is having prob in writing the letters /alphabets or shes simply bored.

I don't think the system can be faulted as yet. Jharla is a place where there was barely any school and now there is one which is aiming at providing basic facilities to under previledged. So this is case of something is better than nothing.
But there is a disconnect in the methods of teaching. May be another teacher in place of Kishore could have done a better job in the same environment / system.

Usually the first class is always about introduction and getting to know backgrounds but that was a miss here. Kishore too needs to be given a feedback on his performance. Question is who will do that? Anandi or Jagya? Akhiraj won't

Anyways, I hope when Mangala finds out that N bunked school she scolds her and at the same time explain importance of studying. The questions M asked N yesterday shows that M does understand the basic importance of schooling and it's need in N's life.

Mangala will scold Nandini for bunking school. So she will continue to go to school. She will tell education is very important other than that she can't do much. She can ensure her presence in school but once inside the school premises Nandini is all on her own.

Also Akheraj will take it as a prestige issue and for all that we know he may even resort to drop her at school and pick her up after school out of his own desperate need to look good.😛

So it doesn't really look like her education will stop.

But the thing is she needs someone to help her find her way IN the school.

Kishore is currently being mentored by Anandi and she suggested that he go to Jhalra.

Unless this Kishore sees a few more drop outs he may not realise that there could be problem with his methods.

Anandi can help him there about using innovative methods to teach kids. Not just adult education even when she first started school for girls she used unconventional ways to teach them because she knew the background of the girls and what they are going to do in their lives.

Kishore needs inputs from Anandi to get the desired results. He is totally inexperienced. He also has a point to prove not just Nandini.

The track will drag but through Kishore we probably get to see Anandi's methods being revisited.

Since the idea of school is led by Akhi, J and A, at some point they will all have to step up to see whether their idea of running a school is beneficial or not to the community. And what more needs to be done.
Its like trustees overseeing management type scenario.

For me, as long as N goes to school ( even if bored) , it's ok. Because if she is confined to the school area, she will be forced to figure out a way to study. But if she is successful at bunking or if for any reason this bunking makes Akhi Harki to stop her education, there is no way out.

I don't trust Akhi. Even though he may be completely desperate to maintain his goodwill, he may come up with reasons to stop her school.
