Do you agree that it's been smooth sailing for you in Bollywood so far?
Yes. The endeavour from here is to do different work. Mine was the most talked-about debut (Student of the Year) and I am very grateful to Karan Johar. I don't want to ever let him down. I keep trying different genres so that I can cover the spectrum. Hasee Toh Phasee was a fun romantic film while Ek Villain was an intense romantic film. In Brothers I have no heroine. (laughs)
How involved is K JO in your choice of films?
He is my one point contact for any trouble. He is the most helpful person in the industry and everybody will vouch for that.
Do you think the audience today is more unforgiving? Ranbir and Arjun have had stronger critics than Akshay for example...
I feel the audience today has changed and they are ready to accept you in different roles, which wasn't the case earlier. People wanted to see Akshay and Shah Rukh in certain roles, which is why they played certain types of characters.
Audience today allows an actor to play all sorts of characters " positive, negative, grey. This is because they're exposed to a lot of different films themselves. Having said that, everybody makes mistakes, so the audience should also go easy on the actors. And if you are trying to do something different, make sure the script is convincing.
Ek Villain or Hasee Toh Phasee " which film got you more appreciation?
Both the films gave me a different kind of high. It's tough to choose.
What kind of reaction did each film get you?
The first reaction of the audience was that...
...That you can act?
Yes, exactly. Arre acting kar raha hai " that's what came out because they had a different impression about me after Student Of The Year. That gave me a kind of satisfaction since there was a barrier I had broken. Ek Villain had action, love, romance " things that people like their heroes to do. Who would've thought that I would be cast in Ek... after Student Of The Year and Hasee Toh Phasee? (laughs)
The biggest high for you is...
SOTY. It has given us so much. Even today people tell me that they still enjoy the music of the film. It is, however, the highlight of my life so far. I have a long way to go.
Have you and Katrina started the first schedule of Nitya Mehra's film in London?
Yes. We are prosthetically ageing ourselves for the film and both Katrina and I are very excited about the project.
