"What about them?"
"How are they so close?"
"I've never been able to figure it out myself. But you know Mihir you don't know how you fall in love, it just happens and that's what happened with him. I know you are afraid of the step mother tag Ishita has, but she's perfect for Ruhi. I hope you trust me just enough to believe I thought before saying this."
"Raman...Ruhi will be happy right?"
"Look over at her."
Mihir looked to over to see Ishita bringing in Ruhi who was completely filled with energy and placed her on the floor sitting down next to her. As Ishita nuzzled her stomach, the child burst into a fit of laughter bringing a smile on the face of the two men at the table. Though it was a usual sight for Raman, it warmed his heart every time he saw the 2 important girls of his life so happy together. But Mihir was witnessing this sight for the first time. He again tried to imagine his own sister in her spot again and it just didn't seem right. He looked on sadly as his sister could never be put into the spot, it just wasn't Shagun to sit and play with a child like that. He looked Ruhi who all evening was only happy with Raman and Ishita. Ishita looked like her real mother from all angles and if he didn't know it was his sister who gave birth to her, he might have thought the same.
The whole place screamed Ruhi. Her things scattered everywhere, everyone talking about her, the walls with her pictures, and everyone's attention was on her. It was true when Raman had once said his daughter would be the center of his world, and today he saw exactly that. But what pleasantly surprised him in all this was Ishita. She was being the mother he wished for Ruhi, she put Ruhi before herself and did all mothers do for their children. He noticed she couldn't see her cry and left her food to feed Ruhi, she didn't react when Ruhi spilt juice over Mihika's clothes when he thought she would be mad at Ruhi, she was sick yet putting Ruhi before herself...she was just being a mother.
He was Ruhi's uncle, but did it have the right to do this anymore? His sister hurt Raman by lying and now he was hurting him by doing all this to him. He remembered Mihika's words about how low Ishita and Raman had been ever since their conversation. He went back to the family he saw out on the balcony before they knew of his arrival. Was he making this happy family sad with his behavior? He shouldn't be doing so. He needed to let them live peacefully as his niece was in good hands and live peacefully himself as there was no need for his worry anymore. He came out of his thoughts as Raman was about to ask...
"Are you satisfied that Ruhi is-"
"Raman! Come here!" he was interrupted by Ishita while Mihika came out after changing. Leaving everything, Raman rushed to Ishita and Ruhi were he found them both laughing. He sat down next to her asking why she was yelling over nothing. She looked at him with teary eyes that were lit up by her smile. He didn't know how to react seeing her with tears yet so much happiness. Maybe since it was the first time he was seeing her cry tears of happiness, and he realized why as she pointed to Ruhi excitedly...
"Look at our Ruhi!"
He looked at Ruhi laying on her stomach trying to get up. They both sat watching her as Mihir and Mihika stood by wondering what was happening. Raman reached over to turn Ruhi on her back so she could play, but was stopped by Ishita who held his hand and asked him to watch. A minute later, Ruhi kept her head up as she managed to roll over onto her back. By the time she looked at her parents waving her hands frantically, Raman had tears in his eyes as Ishita held his hand.
"I...I got to see her...turn over for the first time!" she exclaimed to Raman telling him proudly that she got to see their child's milestone first.
"She...she did it! All on her own." He looked amazed at his daughter.
"Raman...I told you she would do everything kids her age do!"
"I know! She's really doing it! She...really...it's because of you." He looked at Ishita gratefully as he picked up Ruhi and gave her a hug. Trying to escape his tight hug Ruhi reached out to Ishita who took her into her arms. He ran his hand over Ruhi's head while Ishita wiped off her tears and wiped his tears with Ruhi's hands.
"Stop crying Papa. Your daughter is growing up and you're still acting like a baby."
"That's true, our Ruhi's growing up fast! So no more crying, only smiling." He wiped his eyes and put his arms around his Ishita while pinching Ruhi's cheeks and Ishita also joined in as they were both oblivious to the other 2 pairs of eyes that were watching them.
Mihir couldn't have been happier. Now there was no scope left for doubts. This woman would be called a step mother, but nowhere did it seem like it. The happiness on their faces as Ruhi reached a small milestone, was a delight to watch. The proud looks on their faces, and the tears in their eyes that showed their happiness on their daughter who was told she might not live was now growing up. He knew well enough and could admit...even his sister wouldn't have been like this with Ruhi...
As he was in his own thoughts, Ishita looked up at Mihika and Mihir who were looking at them with smiles on their faces, she moved apart from Raman who also looked up and noticed the others looking at them. As they both got up and looked away embarrassed, Mihika broke the awkwardness by talking to Ruhi in a childish tone telling her how grown up she was while the infant for the first time smiled at her.
Mihir also came forward opening his arms for Ruhi. Ishita reluctantly handed him over to him knowing well she couldn't stop him from loving his niece. Clutching onto her dupatta, Ruhi refused to go to anyone else and cried the instant Mihir rocked her in his arms and tried to talk to him. She tried to push him away crying when Ishita came forward to her...
"No Ruhi, he's your mamaji. You have to be nice to him. He loves you, so you love him!" she told her making her stop crying as the infant looked curiously at her mother and back the teary eyed Mihir who was saddened by his niece's dislike for him and thankful to Ishita for still trying to keep him close to Ruhi no matter what their equation was and despite all the doubts he had. So he finally handed Ruhi over to her mouthing a thank you to her. While she was confused, she gave him a smile taking Ruhi. Mihir sighed and both Ishita & Raman knew he would finally say what they had been wanting to know...
"Raman, Ishitaji...I'm...I was wrong."
"Mihir..." Raman started as he realized Ishita was unaware of the truth, but Mihir didn't stop.
"It took one evening to see you three a just another family. There is no step mother in this house. It's just 2 parents with their small child. And I should have trusted you Raman when you said Ishitaji is the perfect mother for Ruhi. And now I would say the same thing, you and Ruhi have chosen the best mother for her who loves her in ways I can't imagine my own sister doing so."
"I told you that we can raise our daughter perfectly fine. I'm glad you understood now, so I've shown you that Ruhi is being raised properly, then please just go!"
"Raman...please don't. Try and see from my view. My own sister lied to me and you. I couldn't trust anyone and I needed to see before I could believe your words."
"That didn't mean you had to raise a question on our parenting. And worse exclude me from your family. No matter what was between us I always consider you a younger brother, a friend that I was upset at, but someone who meant something to me. You didn't even consider me that. You ended our relationship there. Now we have one connection and that's Ruhi. You're her uncle and I'm her father. You want to meet her? Go ahead we can't take that from you, but don't try to talk to me!"
"Raman..."
"Please leave now!"
Dejected Mihir slowly walked out with the hope that the connection with Ruhi will maybe give their friendship a second chance while Mihika followed behind him as he looked upset at everything that was happening while she was confused and wanted answers. As the two left, Raman didn't want to turn around and face Ishita as he knew now she would know everything and be upset. And he was right because as he turned he heard her...
"Raman...you...lied?"
"Ishita...sorry."
"No Raman, why did you hide all this?"
"I didn't want you hurt."
"Why do you always think about me? Never yourself, you were hurt as well!"
"Ishita..."
"No! I'm very upset today!" she stormed off to their room. He followed behind her and sat next to her on the bed as she gave him an angry look before continued to try to put Ruhi to sleep. He sat next to her quietly while she was busy with Ruhi. A few minutes later he got up right after she did and got a glare from her before she placed Ruhi in her crib. Without a word to him, she walked back to their bed blinking away her tears and he stood his spot looking at her. As he saw her getting ready to sleep, he tried to talk...
"Ishita...I can't see your tears or stress...so I hid it."
"No Raman. I tell you everything, so what is this? You hide your pain, your problems just so I'm not stressed? And on top of that someone comes and starts to judge my love for my daughter and I didn't even know! I was trying to think of a way to show Mihir how much you care and watch over Ruhi while the whole time, it was me he was judging."
She was just hurt. She was confused as to what hurt more, that he didn't tell her the truth or that her love for Ruhi was being questioned. Tired due to the worry since yesterday and her emotional state she lay down to sleep while he came and sat down in his spot next to her. She turned the other way around and left her back to face him. It was quiet for a few minutes as he didn't know what to say and she wanted to be left alone. He was ready to apologize as many times as she wanted him to, but he wanted to get rid of her anger as Mihika had scared him about what she was like in anger...
"Ishita...listen." He tapped her shoulder in case she would be really upset. He didn't get a response and thought she was really mad now.
"Ishita..." he softly called her again. Again no response and he came closer to find her asleep with an angry pout on her face. Clearly she was hurt, but her anger seemed to be temporary and he couldn't help but smile even after being scolded as he looked at her angry young woman form. Covering her with the duvet, he chuckled to himself as he found her looking really cute in her sleeping yet angry form...
"So cute even in her anger...but when she wakes up, I'm in trouble. Need to do something now." He started to think back to Mihika's words about her anger and wondered what he would do know to make her anger vanish. Then he looked back at her and his heart melted seeing her face again...
"But she's not awake yet." He smiled to himself as he caressed her head and lay down in bed only to hug his cute yet angry wife from behind as he thought of ways to apologize to her...
