Akshay Oberoi: The film
industry loves slotting actors according
to Khans, Kapoors, or indie actors

Being a star cousin doesn't always help. You have to carve
your niche and have to go through struggles. Despite being
the first cousin of actor Vivek Oberoi, Akshay Oberoi's
journey in Bollywood was never easy. He had his own share of
struggles and like any other outsider or newcomer even he
had to go knocking doors of producers and directors for that
one big chance'.

After making a start with ISI LIFE MEIN under Rajshri
banner, Akshay almost waited for four years and strived
hard until he fetched PIZZA. Post the Bejoy Nambiar film, he
was inundated with offers. Akshay was last seen in PIKU in a
small role. Today he has as good as four films in hand -
FITOOR, BOMBARIYA, GURGAON, and YEH LAAL RANG.
"The whole industry can be in denial sometimes. You get
carried away sometimes by the illusion and can't accept the
ground reality. So I don't want to fall in that trap anymore.
I should know at every point in my career where mentally
exactly I am, where I have reached and where I have not.
And that's the only way to keep being seen. I know for a
matter of fact that there was a time when I went knocking
from door to door to please the filmmakers and text them in
different styles to bag that one 'good opportunity'. But that
was very difficult. So when I talk from this point, when I
have 4 projects that too good ones, I feel really happy. For
me this is growth. This is one step forward. So every year if I
keep moving one step forward, I can ask for nothing more,"
says the actor.
Akshay further says that Bollywood loves slotting' actors.
However, this practice will be wiped out one fine day,
according to him
"Our industry loves categorizing actors. You suddenly witness
Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra and Aditya Roy Kapoor in
one bracket, then stars like Ranbir Kapoor and Hrithik
Roshan in another bracket, while Khans in yet another
bracket. And if that is not enough let's put the rest others
in one bunch or slot them as indie actors who work for
parallel cinema and all. So this has been prevalent for a long
time. But I think in next 5-6 years all these bracket system
will go away because of the audience. There won't be any
slotting of actors," says Akshay
"Having said that, in an industry where so much of slotting
and bracketing is done, I am very fortunate that the same
industry has given a chance to actors like me. The reality of
the situation is that we have so many films releasing and just
five actors can't do all those films. You need more people for
the industry to grow. And I am proof of that finally industry
is growing and giving chances to younger, newer people. I
think that way we are on the right path," he adds on a
parting note.
