"I thought you were coming back on Sunday," I frowned. His mouth pulled up at the side. "Well, yeah I was, but I couldn't go for three more days without you," he said, his voice husky and intense.
"Manik," I cajoled him.
"What... I told you to come with me but being the stubborn minx that you are, you just don't listen to me. And don't worry, all of them are still over there."
"Well, I didn't want to interfere in the time that you spend with your friends, that's why I didn't come. I know they're your family for you, and outsiders don't come to family outings," I teased.
I squealed when he took me in his arms, made way to my bedroom, and threw me on the bed. I gasped as he came on top of me, guarding me from all sides as if he thought I'd runaway.
"Nandini," he said, his eyes glittering with anger. "It's true, they are my family, but you are my life. What we have, I've never had that before with anyone, ever. I want to be the center of your universe, like you are for me. It seems I can't breathe when you're not around. And in case you've forgotten, let me remind you... I'm so in love with you. Desperately, helplessly in love with the most stubborn woman in the world, it takes my breath away every single time I see you. So don't, not even as a joke, imply that you are an outsider for us. For me." By the time he finished, my eyes had filled up with salt water.
"Oh no, please don't cry," he murmured, nibbling at my cheeks tenderly.
"I had a way then, losing it all on my own..." My phone.
Manik growled. "You really need to switch off your phone when you're with me."
I sighed and picked it up from somewhere behind my head.
"Hola Nandini," I heard four familiar voices greet me. I chuckled and put the phone on speaker.
"Sorry Manik, we disturbed you, didn't we?" Mukti said, not sounding the least bit sorry.
"Nandini, ab tumhare Romeo ko tum hi sambhalo. He was literally getting on our nerves checking his phone again and again and again. I even heard him mumble your name in sleep", Cabir said, whispering the last part conspiratorially.
"Guys, shut up!"
"Okay okay, we just called to check that you've reached safely. We'll hang up, before you murder us through the phone by magic osmosis" Cabir chuckled. "Bye, lovebirds!" Alya said and hung up the phone.
"You were mumbling my name in your sleep? That's so sweet," I teased, wrapping my arms and legs around him.
"Ms. Murthy, don't try and act smart with me", he whispered mischievously.
"Or?" I said, provoking him.
And then his mouth was on mine, the kiss deep and ravenous. I was swept away by his passion and the beloved feel of his weight pressing me into the mattress. He smelled so good. His skin was so warm.
"I missed you", I murmured against his lips.
When I saw the vulnerable and lost expression he had on his face, a sweet, sharp ache pierced my chest.
"Manik," I whispered, loving the feel of his stubble beneath my fingertips. He smiled his shy smile, the one which was reserved for me.
"I want to make love with you and listen to the rain", he said, nuzzling my ear.
There was the smell of rain and wet earth, the whisper of thunder moving off, and solitude.
