Two days passed. I didn't see anyone. I just stayed in my room. Parth thought I broke up with Ishika, that was why I was feeling so down, and he left me alone. I didn't have the energy to correct him and tell him that I broke up with my friend, I broke up with my Sanyukta.

On the third day, I was laying in bed, feeling upset, when there was a knock on my door. I got up, shirtless, expecting it to be one of the boys, and opened the door.

To my surprise, and amazement, Sanyukta Agarwal stood outside.

She looked down at my chest and I saw her turn a bit red, then she regained her composure and pushed past me into my room. I closed the door behind me and looked at her expectantly.

"Why are you here?" I asked her.

"What? I can't come here?" she snapped.

"It's hard to believe that you came here to hang out," I said to her.

She walked up to me and dug her nails into my shoulders as she glared at me.

"Randhir you gave me big lectures about how I shouldn't miss class, and now here you are bunking every class, and not even leaving your room!" she snapped.

I tried to push her off me, but she held on tightly.

"Sanyukta that's my business, not yours," I said to her.

She then removed her hands from my shoulders and threw punches at my chest - one after the other, as her eyes filled up with tears.

"Ouch," I said as I stepped back, but she didn't stop punching me.

I kept on stepping back, until I tripped over my bed and fell backwards. She didn't stop though, she climbed on top of me on the bed and kept on hitting me.

"No more lies, you promise?" she asked me, tears falling from her eyes.

"No more," I said to her softly.

Then before I could do anything or say anything more, she had smacked her lips against mine hungrily, as if she had a lot of pent up sexual frustration, struggling to be let out.

I wasn't complaining though - my arm circled around her waist and brought her body closer to mine, as my other hand reached up to stroke her cheek, while my lips were busy devouring hers.

"Come to class," she whispered against my lips.

"Done," I murmured.

"I missed you," she said, and I felt her tears fall onto my cheeks.

"I missed you too," I admitted.

"Break up with Ishika too," she demanded.

"I will today," I whispered to her.

"Good," she replied, and then proceeded to kiss me hungrily, leaving me in awe.

Not long after Sanyukta left my room and I finally got out of bed, Parth walked in and saw me smiling.

"Are you okay?" Parth asked me.

"I'm in love Parth," I said, smiling widely.

"But you just broke up with her!" Parth exclaimed sounding shocked.

"I haven't broken up with Ishika yet... I'm going to do that now," I told him. "But... it isn't Ishika."

"Who is it then?" Parth asked, sounding completely blown away.

"Sanyukta," I said, dreamily.

"What?" Parth asked, "Sanyukta?"

"I don't know how or when... I just fell in love with her," I said to him with a big smile on my face. "We weren't talking for the last three days, so I was feeling bad... but she came here and now she's talking to me again."

I heard footsteps approach the room, but they stopped. Perhaps it was Jiggy, whose room was next door.

"You know, when Sanyukta and I got drunk together for the first time, a week after school started, we kissed," I said to Parth. "She doesn't remember, even to this day... she thinks her first kiss was with someone else, but it was me."

Then the door opened loudly and I turned around and nearly had a heart attack when I saw that it was Sanyukta at the door.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

I cursed myself. Why did I have to bring tears into her eyes every single time?

"When were you planning on telling me Randhir?" she asked me, as she stepped into the room.

"I'll... be out," Parth said awkwardly and then stepped outside of the room, closing the door behind him.

"Sanyukta?" I asked, shocked.

"I left my bag here," she whispered, as tears spilled from her eyes. "Were you planning on hiding this forever Randhir?"

"I'm so sorry Sanyukta," I whispered, as I painfully watched the tears fall from her eyes.

I was always the reason for her pain, her misery. I was the reason she cried. It was only because of me.

Mentally, I told myself... for every teardrop that fell from her eyes, I wanted to feel the stab ten times more.

She held my arms as if she was trying to steady herself, and she took a deep breath.

"I'm hurt Randhir," she whispered. "Randhir, I'm so hurt."

"I know... I am very sorry Sanyukta," I told her, "I swear... my intention was never to hurt you."

"But you did, didn't you?" she asked softly. "You hurt me Randhir... you know, I always thought, despite the mean things you said to me, you had a nice heart... and that was just your way of teasing me."

She sniffled, and I felt my own eyes become wet as she went on.

"I thought... I thought, that somewhere deep down, there was concern for me... that you were a good guy. I know I said you're just like Sameer, but I never believed it... I knew, that you were too good to be like him," she confessed, as more tears spilled from her eyes.

I couldn't help it. I felt my own body go weak as she continued.

"Randhir, you... you came into my life as an angel, disguised as a demon," she whispered. "You always showed me your thorns, when really, all this while - all this while, you were a beautiful rose, not just thorns."

The sincerity in her voice, the tears that fell from her eyes, the way she held my arms, like she was holding me for the last time, got to me.

Her confession was beautiful, it was so sincere, but the pain in her voice was clawing at me, scratching me, hurting me more than anything.

"I feel like... I feel like this lie just... just snatched something from me. The rose that was slowly revealing itself to me, the thorns that had gone away... the lie snatched my Randhir away from me," she croaked, each word of hers killing me one by one.

She called me her Randhir. I didn't know whether to smile or cry. I didn't know why I felt like I was dying.

"Behind your mask, there was a beautiful rose, blooming. I was catching glimpses of it, dying to know more... but Randhir, I feel like I died before I got to see the rose," she whispered.

Then she let go of my arms and turned around to leave.

"Sanyukta," I called out after her hoarsely. "Please... please forgive me."

She stopped and squeezed her eyes shut, her back turned towards me.

"I'm sorry Randhir. I - I can't forgive you this time. My heart is too weak to forgive you. I thought, all this time, I was falling in love with you, when really, I was falling in love with a lie," she confessed. "Still, I want to say thank you for that beautiful lie, because these last few days have shown me, a dream far too beautiful to have been real. These last few days gave me a feeling, like I had never felt before. Thank you for being the reason for that. Thank you so much... and I hope you forgive me."

Before I could compose myself enough to say anything else, she had left, and the tears I held back, streamed down my face, and I suddenly couldn't breathe.

She had to come back. I refused to believe that she had just left like that. The one girl I loved more than anything else couldn't leave me.

Yes, I was wrong. I lied to her. I hid something big from her. I only did it for her - so she wouldn't get upset, so she wouldn't freak out. In the beginning, I was afraid, but that was before I caught any feelings for her.

Once I fell deeply in love with her, I did everything for her and only her.

I broke up with Ishika right away, with no desire to continue that relationship. Ishika had been pissed off, and I didn't blame her... after all, what kind of boyfriend had I been to her? I was constantly thinking about Sanyukta. I never gave Ishika any attention.

I tried again to speak to Sanyukta, but she wouldn't listen to me. I would see her in class, looking upset... and I knew that I hurt her more than Sameer ever had.

A week later, I caught Sanyukta's arm after classes were over for that day, and she tried to free herself from my grip.

"Leave me alone Randhir," she said through gritted teeth.

"I need to talk to you," I told her desperately. "Please Sanyukta."

Then I pulled on her arm and dragged her into an empty classroom, before closing the door behind us.

"Why did you bring me here? Why can't you respect my decision?" Sanyukta snapped, her eyes wet.

I touched her cheek lightly and I saw her eyes squeeze shut. I wiped the tears off her face lovingly before I held the top of her arms gently.

"I can't see tears in your eyes Sanyukta," I admitted. "Sanyukta, you're all alone."

"I'm not alone," she whispered. "Please Randhir, don't come so close to me... I will die."

"You won't die," I told her defiantly. "You need me Sanyukta. You need me."

"I don't need anyone," she said, raising her voice, as her eyes opened and more tears spilled.

Then she pushed me off her and turned to walk away but I grabbed her wrist from behind and walked up to her, before letting go of her, and wrapping my arms around her body from behind.

I rested my face in the crook of her neck, as my lips made contact with the skin on her neck, her back against my body.

"Randhir stop it," she whispered. "Please... I can't take all this. I need to be far away from you, or I'll wither away."

"Shh," I murmured into her neck. "Sanyukta, I promise you - before you wither, before you die, I'll perish. I won't be able to live without you."

I felt her tremble against my body, and I knew she was silently crying.

"Why do your words sound so genuine Randhir?" she asked. "I know what you're saying is not real... but my heart refuses to believe you're lying."

"It's because I'm not," I murmured. "Sanyukta, I'm not lying. I need you and you need me. You've become alone, sad, lost."

"I'll be more alone if I live in a fantasy world with you Randhir," she croaked, then she pushed against my arms, before breaking free from me, and ran out of the room, sobbing.

I watched her go, feeling my heart get crushed. I broke her. I hurt her so badly, that she was broken beyond repair, and I knew that it wouldn't be easy to fix her again... but I wouldn't give up.

I couldn't give up on my Sanyukta.

Another two weeks passed with Sanyukta completely avoiding me. The college was ready to go home for vacations, due to Diwali being that month. The whole college was off for three weeks.

On the day that everyone was leaving for vacation, I saw Sanyukta sitting outside on a bench. I walked up to her, glad that she was alone. Most people had already left, and I had already packed my bags to go home too.

"Hey," I said softly, sitting down next to her on the bench.

She looked up at me with surprise, and without responding to me, she stood up and started to walk away.

"Sanyukta," I called out, "Can we talk once... just once, please?"

Sanyukta stopped walking and then turned towards me, tears in her eyes.

"Randhir, I told you, I don't want to," she whispered.

I walked up to her and held her waist gently, causing her to shiver. I didn't know what I was doing or why I was doing it... all I knew was that Sanyukta and I wouldn't be seeing each other for three weeks, and I didn't like that.

I pulled Sanyukta towards me and hugged her tightly. She stood stiffly for a few moments, before she relaxed and her hands wrapped around my body too.

Then she started to sob.

"You're going to kill me Randhir," she whispered through her tears. "I can't stay away, but if I come too close, I'll die."

"Why will you die?" I asked her softly, rubbing her back soothingly.

"Your thorns will hurt me," she whispered.

"I'm sorry," I murmured. "Sanyukta, I won't see you for three weeks... and... and I'll miss you."

She sniffled against my chest and I held her closer to me, stroking her hair softly.

"I... I love you," I whispered into her ear, causing her to shiver.

"Randhir, I'm not strong enough to face deceit," she responded softly.

"You won't... give me one more chance Sanyukta," I begged. "Please - I promise, I won't mess up this time."

I felt her crumble against my body, and she started to fall towards the ground, her arms falling to her sides. I held her up, but her knees gave way and she sat down on the cement as she sobbed uncontrollably.

I fell to my knees and cupped her face as I kissed her forehead.

"I want to Randhir," she confessed. "I really want to... but I don't think I can survive another stab at my heart."

"I'll hold your heart safe for you," I responded to her softly. "If anything is going to be stabbed now, it'll be me."

"Please Randhir, please don't lie to me again," she whispered to me, as she looked into my eyes.

"I promise, I won't lie to you about anything now," I promised. "If I hide anything from you now, then I request the universe to kill me."

Her hand reached out and covered my mouth. Then she broke down crying and threw her arms around my neck.

"I love you," she confessed, as if she had been dying to let those three words out, and I felt my heart soar, as she pressed her face against my neck. "Randhir, I love you a lot."

Her tears soaked the skin of my neck, but I wasn't complaining. I stroked her hair lovingly, as I felt like the happiest man alive.

I broke our embrace and looked into her tear-filled eyes for a moment, my hand reaching up to rub her jaw softly. Then I leaned forward and captured her lips in a soft kiss.

"I love you too," I murmured against her lips.

She kissed me back hungrily, like she needed me, but the kiss only lasted a few seconds. I broke the kiss, because of a nagging feeling in my mind - the guilt wasn't letting me relax.

"I need to tell you something," I whispered to her, my heart beating fast.

I stood up and held her shoulders as she stood up too.

"Yes?" she asked me softly, before leaning into my chest and resting her head against it.

"Sanyukta... there's one thing you don't know," I started, as I nervously tried to come up with the words to tell her that we slept together while she was drunk.

"What don't I know Randhir?" she asked me softly, her eyes looking into mine with curiosity.

"S - Sanyukta," I stammered, trying to figure out how to tell her.

I stopped - I didn't know how to tell her. Maybe I was a coward. Maybe I didn't want her to get hurt. Maybe I was doing this so she wouldn't hate me. I didn't know why I was doing it - despite me promising to her that I'd never lie to her. I told her I wouldn't hide anything from her.

I was breaking my promise.

"You don't know how much... how much I love you," I finished, feeling the guilty fill me up.

I'm sorry Sanyukta, I said internally. I couldn't do this.

I watched as her eyes lit up and she smiled widely.

"I know you love me a lot," she responded and then threw her arms around my neck, as she hugged me tightly. "I know."

I rubbed her back as I held her close to me... I didn't know if Sanyukta would ever find out this truth. I didn't know whether she would hate me if she found out. I wasn't sure whether I had just ruined everything.

I felt guilty... very guilty. I didn't want her to be so broken, that she would call herself characterless, that she would hurt herself, that she would die.

Sanyukta was going away from me for three weeks, and if I wasn't there to support her, I didn't know who else would be there to hold her hand through this. If she was going away for three weeks, the least I could do was not send her off heartbroken.

I decided that I would tell her, but once the three weeks of vacation were over. Then I would be here to hold her hand and comfort her. I would at least be able to hug her and tell her that it was okay, that she wasn't bad.

I just couldn't reveal such a shocking thing to her when she was going to leave for so long.

"So I won't see you for three weeks?" she asked, breaking the hug.

I cupped her face with my hands and kissed her forehead.

"Anytime you want, I will come and see you," I whispered to her sincerely.

"Promise?" she asked me with a smile on her face.

"I promise," I responded softly.

At least there was one promise I made to Sanyukta that I knew I could keep.
