She went down, finished up her work, Ritu again complimented her, if only verbally so.
Ii was overjoyed, after two misses since Ritu started this was a "about time" win

She savored the feeling of doing things right and being appreciated for it

She texted her friends, no one could go for a "drink" ermm... a glass of wine and chocolate cake

She scrolled over Manya's name wondering if she should ask her
But became afriad of rejection, or questions like

She went to Sam's name

"Aap chalengi mere saath for a cocktail and choc cake?" she texted polite words

"Hum chalenge agar Nandu ka home work ho jaaye to" she sent a laugh

"Mujhe laga tum Maurya mein pilaogi?" Sam teased

"I cant afford Maurya" II said honestly

"I WAS KIDDING" Sam sent a face with tears

"I know Sam, but main aapse honestly keh rahi thi" she texted

"Tum mere bhai ki kya ho?" Sam asked

II DID NOT RESPOND

"Lasya kya kar rahi hai?" she asked instead

Sam stared at that and sighed

"Shes here..." she said thoughtfully

And waited for II to respond to her Q

"Sam main shaayad Friday ko Chandigarh chali jaaoongi"

Sam CALLED

AYYO!! THEY ARE ALL ALIKE

"Kyon?" Sam asked when she answered

"Punjab installations hain, Ashwini 3.5 hafte ki chhutthi par hai" II said

"FOR 3.5 weeks?" Sam asked horrified

"II" Sam said sadly

"Lasya ko de deejiye main dekh loongi" she said softly

"Bilqul nahi, na tum jaogi " Sam ordered passionately

"I am sorry, it feels good that u want me to be here" II's voice quivered with joy "U know people complain they cant seem to get away from their in laws fast enough"

"Philosophy mat jharo" Sam ordered

"I will come during the weekends" II promised

"Dad ko kaha?" she asked

"Hmm...he wasnt so affected" Ii teased

"thanks for mocking me, Ive never had a career I cant relate to it" Sam said hurt

"Sammm I DIDNT MEAN THAT. Please"

"R&B ko kaha?"

"Oh ya... he knows" she said immediately

Sam couldnt tell she was lying

"U guys are crazy... thats all" Sam said
"Crazy for Lasya" II chuckled

"No jokes II" Sam said sternly

"Chalengi aaj raat ko, meri boss ne mujhe compliment kiya" she gushed

"Niiice, tum deserve karti ho, u are married yet u choose to take off someplace for 3.5 weeks" Sam said naively

"sam aise bahut hain jo US etc jaate hain for 2 or 3 years, hubby works for the Indian Govt and cant go" II explained

"Woh sab nahi maloom, its wonderful u are so focussed" Sam gushed

"I love what I do... 4 out fo 5 days its not fun but the 5th day makes up for 4 days of shit" II gushed

"Come over, Tan's bartender/help makes good cocktails" Sam said tactfully

"Umm.. nahi.. kal bhi aayi main for biryani" II refused

"Count karke aaogi kya?" Sam was offended

"No tonight is drink and party night" "BTW dont tell Vandu ka or Amma" II warned

"Phir to zaroor bataoongi" Sam teased

II laughed hanging up

She reached Shanti Niketan after 8:30, texted Ranjan on the way not to wait up for her, called Mahavir and ensured dinner was being made
He said he had made palak paneer and naan in the coal fired oven in the backyard, true Punjabi style

Mera khaana please nikaal kar rakh dena please" she did two please

Mahavir laughed

"Bhabhiji bhaij (he meant veg) to koi khaata nahi ghar par" he reminded her

"Agar aaj kha liya to?" she challenged

He nodded "Nikaal denge aap chinta na karen, aap shaam ko bahar jaayega? he asked in his singsong Bihari accent

"Haan bhayya Sam didi ke ghar" she told him

"Sir ne aloo hool gobi bhi banwaye hain, dono nikal lein kyaa? he asked

"SAB KUCH" she laughed

Lasya was attired in a M&M candy jumpsuit for bed

"Yen di chocolate pottindu irukke?" she scolded (Why are u wearing a candy outfit)

She cooed

"Nee enna pottindalum onna apdiye kadichu thinnuduven"(whatever u wear I will eat u up)

She leaned on II's shoulder and cooed... and then raised her head and said a long windy sentence of some sort

"Ennoda iru u will talk soon" (stay with me) II whispered "NOT with ur Mama. He will only teach u to fight" "Ermm... I am good at that too"

"Isko kya patti padhaa rahi ho?" Sam hugged her

Sofia left the room

"I am teaching her not to be quiet" II waved a finger, and winked

Sam clapped her hands as a frustrated NAMASTE... and said "Meri ma... PLEASEEE already bahut bolti hai at night IN SLEEP"

II laughed hysterically "I DO TOO" "I DID"

"Ayyo" "shes taken after YOU?"

"Umm... I actually listed many things Amma says"

"Aaj kal kya bolti ho?" Sam winked

"Kuch bhi nahi" II tried to smile

"USKO poochhoongi" Sam nodded

They went out to drink, II ordered a Anabolic steroid for herself, Sam ordered a margarita... virgin... since she had to nurse Lasya

"A drunk Lasya" "thats all I need now" Sam was frustrated

"kya hua?" Ii enquired

"My in laws returned no.. from Mumbai Chandigarh and Poona" Sam whispered "I dont know when they will leave"

"Dad bhi achhe nahi hain?" Iia sked

"No... hes OK... Mom ke aage kuch nahi chalti" Sam whined

"I am sorry" II clutched her hand

"No no... I am a whiner... Tan 18 ghante kaam par, Nandu is not doing good in school"

"DO HAFTE MEIN?" II was indignant

"Unit tests start week two" Sam pointed

"Oh sorry... main weekend mein help karoon?"

"Nahi tum to Chandigarh jao" Sam teased

"I am sorry... I will be back" Ii promised

"Koi baat hui kya?" Sam asked cautiously

"NOO?!!" II answered flippantly

"Sach bolo" Sam ordered

"Nothing, he is doing what he loves, I am doing what I love"

"Phone dikhao" Sam grabbed it

Ii was on her work email so the screen was NOT asleep

II boldly went to R&B's texts and shared

"Dekhiye"

"are u up"

"Are u asleep"
"Hey whats going on?"
She showed Sam the three texts from before the "War"

"Har baar maine call kiya" she lied

"Tum chali jao na waha" Sam begged

"How clever" Ii was hurt

"HE MISSES U" Sam said

II's face glowed with a lovely color

"How do u know" she stuttered

"I spoke to him last night, woh Zurich gaya hai na... he said sorry he was going to go, when I spoke,
he said "I have deputed my house keeper to care for random birds on the terrace next door"
"I laughed and asked woh kyon?" "He said II has radio tagged them" "She even weighed them on the day she left, individually and fed the data into a model"

Ii blushed

"I didnt weigh em" "He said" II stopped

"Kya kaha" Sam smiled

"He said if there is no turkey at home then can he eat a bird" II was offended

Sam laughed hysterically

II squirmed and blushed

"HE DOES THE EXACT SAME THINGS NOW TO U THAT HE DID TO US" Sam said softly

"Maine kaha, main ginkar jaaoongi aur mujhe weekly pictures chahiye" II mumbled

"U miss that house?" Sam asked looking at II's bent head, II traced the rim of her glass

She nodded sadly... "If we fought we would make up quick" "I would annoy him to the hilt"

"GO THERE LOVE" Sam cooed

"I cant go offsite Sam" II pleaded

"He worked here for 7 months... he wont come back now" Sam said startled

"Ghar chalen?" II asked

Sam ordered another round Angel's Face for II ... and a refill on hers ..drank hers quietly

sam took a picture of II sipping it unawares, and texted it to R&B

"where?" he texted

VV" Sam texted

"what is she drinking to?" he asked

"Work achievement of some sort" Sam said

"A raise?" R&B asked

"Baat karega?" Sam asked

"In a meeting" R&B texted

"I showed her the picture of the birds/text from last night (pic taken during the day ofcourse. My nitpicking reader is gone, but just an FYI)

"What is she wearing?" he asked

"Navy trousers and tan shirt," Sam said

"MUJHE tok kar aap yaha romance kar rahe ho" II teased, turning to face Sam in the bar.. her stool wobbly,

"Ruko tan ko bata doon na hum kitni der mein ghar jaayenge" Sam lied

"And a ruby nose ring" Sam texted, staring at the sparkler, quickly capturing the sparkle and texting it, unwittingly feeding her bro's nose ring fetish😳
