Hey everyone! First of all thanks for all the birthday wishes! I was so surprised when it turned 12 in India, I got a bunch of PMs and many wishes here as well! So thanks 🤗! And now back to the story, I might not update tomorrow since I want a day off on my bday, so sorry! But I do have a small update for today...
Chapter 34 Woken by the sound of Ruhi's cries, he lazily got up. Looking over at Ishita who was waking up, he quickened his pace and picked up Ruhi. Rocking her to reduce her cries to whimpers, he rushed to Ishita who was getting up.
She felt a hand on her shoulder asking her to lay back down. Recognizing his voice without opening her eyes, she quietly did as he said. He covered her with the blanket and whispered...
"It's okay. Go to sleep."
He tiptoed out of the room looking at her as he walked out. By the time he was at the door she had gone back to sleep, so he carefully shutting the door behind him and tried put his daughter back to sleep. Realizing her hunger was the reason she would not sleep, he went to the kitchen to get milk for her. With much difficulty for a few minutes he managed to warm up some milk for her and sat down on the couch to feed his ever cranky and hungry daughter. He feed her quietly making faces at her earning a few smiles from her. And that's when he heard...
"Jiju?" Looking up he found Mihika walking towards him.
"Mihika? Do you need anything?"
"I just came for water. What are you doing?"
"Your niece, the little devil of the house. She's hungry. A bukkad like her dad!"
Mihika giggled as she sat down on the adjacent couch pulling Ruhi's cheeks getting a glare from the infant. Ignoring Mihika she looked back at her dad as he was the one who was feeding her.
"She needs lots of food to keep those chubby cheeks! By the way, where's Akka?" Mihika looked around.
"She's sleeping."
"Will you handle Ruhi alone?"
"Oh yea, it's not a problem. Anyways Ishita needs sleep. It's been a tiring day for her and sleep is important for her right now. She hardly listens to me when I ask her to rest during the day, so it's good if she sleeps during the night at least."
"You're right...but can I ask you something?"
"Go ahead."
"In a couple of months, when the baby is born. Then will you be just as concerned for Akka or this just because she is pregnant?"
"Her pregnancy adds to my concern. Obviously I want her to take extra care right now. But my concern for her will always be there. I would always want her to take care of herself before anything."
"Hmmm, um Jiju I wanted to say something to you..."
"Don't keep on asking each time. Just say anything."
"I'm...sorry. For this afternoon. I spoke too much. But I was upset and ended up saying a lot."
"It's fine. You actually showed me that Ishita's feelings need to be talked about. She needs to open up as well. You know, I always knew she hid a lot in her but I never asked her to share because I wanted to give her the space and time she needs...Mihika, it's hard to talk about your past when it involves a lot of pain. You want to make sure you're talking to the right person and the right time. Your mind is going in so many directions, you have your emotions from the past, your current emotions and at that time you want to be next a person who will understand that and help you deal with all that. I wanted to be the person for Ishita, but it takes time. That's why I took that time to let her have enough trust on me to talk to me. Your words reminded me if she is trying to make me feel better, I need to be making efforts to do the same for her."
"I'm really sorry now. I didn't know you were not mentioning her past because of these reasons."
"It's fine. Stop saying sorry. You know your Akka has put up a sorry jar at home. You say sorry, you give up a 1000 rupees."
"Trust Akka to think of that. And you're like her as well. You cheer up everyone so easily."
"I try to. And one thing Mihika, I just want you to know, I won't ever mind your words because you and I both want one thing. To turn Ishita's smile into a genuine one."
He gave her a smile as he looked down at Ruhi who was finished the bottle a while. He carefully picked her up and started to burp her as Mihika continued to look at him.
He seems to be a doting dad. She didn't know many men who let their wives sleep while they feed their baby and dealt with things like burping. And whatever he had said to her was completely unexpected. She thought he would be mad or even refuse to talk to her considering all she had said to him irrespective of whether it was right or wrong, and he didn't even hesitate to accept where he had made a mistake. That's when her Akka's words rang in her mind...
"The man is drowning himself in guilt!"
He was so vulnerable...he felt guilty no matter what. Just like her sister. They were both hurt people. She didn't know what had hurt him, but it was visible it was painful when he talked about the past with her. They were really similar yet different. And they got along well too, there was a lot of care and trust between them from what she had seen so far. Maybe this marriage would work out better than she thought.
But in the end what matter the most to her was her sister's happiness. She remembered how she suffered after Subbu left. How she had changed so much and never spoke about her feelings with anyways. She looked at Raman who was busy with Ruhi and simply asked like a small child...
"Jiju...Akka will be okay, right?" she said with a choking voice.
"Mihika...you alright?" he sat down next to her.
"I'm not crying." She looked away wiping off tears from the corners of her eyes. Similar sisters he thought. Both hide their feelings and sad emotions.
"She'll be fine."
"I really hope so."
"Never had such a serious conversation at 3am." He smiled at her, but then suddenly remember that night he had his nightmare. Taken back to all that happened that day, he thought of how easily she had taken away his fears and even said she would choose him and Ruhi over her baby. And the thought of her support for him made him more determined to make her realize her importance and get back her self-respect. His thought chain was broken as Mihika spoke up...
"Jiju, please make Akka smile in any situation just like this."
"I will. Now you also need sleep. And since my peaceful baby is now asleep, I'll also head to bed."
"Good night!" she started to walk back to her room.
"Good night." He went back to his own room.
Both had a smile on their face. Mihika was happy as her brother-in-law was thankfully not what she had assumed while he was glad they had this much needed conversation on what had happened today and cleared everything between them.
~~~~~
"Ishita remember that dinner we had planned, but couldn't go yesterday?" he asked adjusting his tie as she passed him his coat.
"I remember and I also found movie tickets yesterday. Assuming you had planned that as well." She told him disappointed at not being able to go out with him yesterday.
"Yea, but if we couldn't go yesterday, do you want to go today?" he asked and watched her reaction carefully through the mirror as she handed him his watch.
She was happy would be an understatement. It was visible she wanted to go out and spend some time together and he was just as happy. He had at least made a small start on giving back to her and giving her the attention she wanted from her partner.
"Of course I want to!"
"Great, then make sure you and Ruhi are ready by the time I get back from office." He walked out running his hand over Ruhi's head and taking his breakfast to go while Mihika sat eating her breakfast at the table with a grateful smile.
He walked out of the house happy they would be spending the much needed time together and he had made a small start to making her feel better, but he had much bigger things in mind to help her get back all she lost that he needed to get a start on...
