Wizards of Waverly Place is a new live-action comedy Disney Channel Original Series which will premiere on October 12^[1] 2007 on Disney Channel. The series focuses on the Russo children who on the surface seem to be normal teens but are actually wizards in training. The official site was set up on August 17, 2007.

This is the first Disney sitcom to feature simple computer-generated imagery such as superimposing.

Alex Russo (Selena Gomez) and her brothers Justin (David Henrie) and Max (Jake T. Austin) are a lot like the teens in their Manhattan neighborhood but they have one significant difference…they come from a long line of wizards and they must learn to hone their budding magical powers or soon risk losing them. The three are always competing with each other as only the strongest one gets to keep their powers. Their dad Jerry (David DeLuise) was born with the same powers but was forced to relinquish them when his brother, Kelbo, surpassed him magically. He soon married their mom, a mortal named Theresa (Maria Canals). Now, while their parents run the family business, Waverly Sub Station, the three siblings get into and out of comedic situations as they grapple with both their budding wizardly powers and typical teen challenges spanning school, friends and family.

Alexandra Morgan "Alexi/Lexi" Russo (Selena Gomez), at 14, is the middle child in the Russo family, however she is still the queen of Waverly Place, she is sassy and stylish and doesn't find it hard to fit in. She is very confident however she is also undisciplined when it comes to using her powers. Like her siblings she constantly competes against them to keep her powers. Her (like her sibling's) wizard works often go awry but she can ultimately rely on her siblings to help her out of tight spots. Her best friend is Harper. Maxwell Andrew "Max" Russo (Jake T. Austin), at 12, is the youngest child in the Russo family. He is extremely mischievous and him having his magic powers just kick in does not help! He loves sandwiches, which is convenient as his family run a sandwich shop! He also loves to play pranks on his older brother and sister. Like his siblings he constantly competes against them to keep his powers. His (like his sibling's) wizard works often go awry but he can ultimately rely on his siblings to help him out of tight spots. Justin Christopher Russo (David Henrie), at 16, is the oldest child in the Russo family. He is an overachiever and exercises restraint over his powers as he tries to fit in at high school. He loves comics and separates work time from play time, he could be a little more popular if it wasn't for this... Like his siblings he constantly competes against them to keep his powers. His (like his sibling's) wizard works often go awry (though less often than his younger siblings) but he can ultimately rely on his siblings to help him out of tight spots. Harper (Jennifer Stone) is Alex Russo's best friend, she is a very understanding person. She also has a crush on Alex's older brother, Justin. She does not know of the Russo's magical abilities but she always tries to help Alex out of tricky situations. Theresa Larkin-Russo (Maria Canals) is the calmer more relaxed parent, however she won't stand for magic run amok. She often encourages the kids to learn about her latino side of the family too. She is a mortal and therefore does not have any powers. She often is the one who keeps the sandwich shop running while her husband tutors their children.
• Jerry Russo (David DeLuise) is the more temperamental parent. He was a wizard however when he was surpassed magically by his brother Kelbo he lost his powers. Soon after he married the mortal Theresa, He is the one who tutors their children about the proper use of magic, while dodging Alex's many magical requests, in their secret lair. He is always trying to keep one step ahead of his children's magical mishaps.

The show will premiere the same night as Twitches Too in October. The shows official trailer was shown when High School Musical 2 premiered. The show was created by one of the writers of Hannah Montana and is produced by one of the producers of That's So Raven.
• One of the shows directors, Fred Savage, has also directed episodes of That's So Raven, Hannah Montana and Phil of the Future.
