Hi All
,

Made a New Post, the 4th in Chittor Battle series. It is about the most awaited events in which many expressed interest. This talks about how this battle was ACTUALLY fought and how the two sides engaged in combat for 5 months before the ultimate 'annihilation'.

This Post also contains 3 BIG portraits from Akbarnama with as much DETAILED explanations as possible :

1. About the Mining done by Mughal Forces.

2. About the "explosion" which killed many soldiers.

3. Akbar shoots Jaimal with his matchlock.

It is interesting to know that a LOT of gunpowder was used in this battle. For example : On the night of 17th December 1567 ALONE, more than 7500 Kilograms of gunpowder was set to fire to explode the walls of Chittor Fort.!!!

The description of this war is nothing short of reading an action novel, where the soldiers engaged in heroic struggle for 5 months.!!

Direct Link to that Post is here, and can be read at this link ->

ACTUAL Struggle between Mughal - Rajput Forces - Course of War Before the Jauhar and Saka | Battle of Chittor Part-4 | With explained Portraits from Akbarnama

I have posted a Summary of this post on the Sticky thread of the Forum. Link to that summary post is here :

Abhay

Wonderful post! 👏

Truly, words fall short of praising the resistance offered by the Rajputs to the Mughals for so long. The battle must have been so all-consuming, with both sides fighting day and night, sometimes without food or water. How the soldiers on both sides must have fought while watching their friends dying around them every day. Apart from the fighting, the Mughals had to prepare their sabats and mines while the Rajputs had to keep closing breaches in the fort walls. While the Mughals had the men to do the required construction, the Rajputs had to spare men from their already limited garrison for the maintenance of the fort.

The civilians and the women in the fort also played their part in keeping up the spirits of the soldiers guarding their fortress and honor.

The Mughals had to use so much gunpowder to be able to defeat the Rajputs and enter the fort - just shows that without the right weapons, even a mighty army can be held up by a small army of determined men, who are engaged in a do-or-die battle for their pride and freedom.

Looking forward to more posts in this series. 😊

Hi Abhay, I've read the account of the battle of chitter previously also. But ur account has given the clear insight about he whole situation very clearly. But I really have a bit doubt.. i.e. AKBAR never showed this much of religious fanaticism (I really call this like that only because after reading the slogans n statements issued after the war, it really looks like that that he is very keen to establish Islamic State of Hindustan like all other jeehadis) in any of the battles he fought before r after chittor . Even when BK n MA r there with him who r verymuch against Hindus n other religions then also he never showed r fought like this n what really concerns me is the after math of the battle. Have u ever come across any account saying that he wanted to propagate Islam n rule the country according to Islamic rules? At the time of this Battle of Chittor MUZ is with him not in the battle field but she is his wife by then. Then why didn't she try to stop him? What really made him to change his perspective? After this battle they were blessed with Salim. Its always a question mark like why he did like that n what really prompted him to change afterwards? It is really very difficult to accept the truth that its really AKBAR who did plan n execute this battle. Because it didn't sink with his persona n character. It always looks like out of character for him to do like that. We all know that he is wonderful strategist n brave warrior n most of the times he won the battles. But this battle particularly aftermath of this battle didn't sink with his personality. This is the only blemish on this otherwise mighty benevolent emperor's illustrious reign. We didn't come across this much cruelty in any of the battles r events in his entire life. This Battle is the only one of its kind I think. It is not enough to praise the valor of the Rajaputana in this battle. They r the real patriots for their mother land. They took the route less travelled n faced all the hardships mighty well. We can never tire enough to praise the bravery shown by the womenfolk of these warriors in embracing death with smiling faces. They did their duty commendably.👏👏
I can accept this battle n their strategies because in that day n age its always a duty to fight wars n expand ur kingdom is very common amongst the kings. So its quite common for AKBAR to go along those lines. The retaliation of the Rajput Forces is also great. But I simply cannot digest AKBAR doing an AAURANGAZEB after the battle. Is this like a KALINGA moment for AK? Because it looks out of character for him to do those many atrocities as I really call them like that only If u have any info regarding this pls. share with us.
Thank u verymuch for ur efforts in bringing the actual facts about these great people n helping us to understand them n the days bygone.

BTW, Chittor was NO Kalinga moment for Akbar. A battle was also fought in Gujarat after Chittor, where almost same story was repeated, though, on a smaller scale.

Thanks Abhay for this beautiful but very depressing post. I have the Akbarnama and had avoided reading the Chittor war because I knew I would be very affected by it but couldn't resist reading your post.
What can I say? My heart is full of admiration for the Mewar Rajputs. To fight a loosing battle with the largest and most vicious enemy with the zeal that they did! One cannot even imagine the self respect and love that they had for their motherland. No words to express what I feel...
What disappointed me most about Akbar was not the ruthlessness(which is kind of expected from a ruler who is hell bent on conquering the land) but the religious overtones he brought into this war. Maybe that was his way of boosting the morale of his men who were all too ready to give up or maybe at heart he still had lingering remnants of the religious fanatic brought up by MA and his Khan baba.
I feel that maybe even Akbar wasn't proud of this blunder of his and that's why he left the fort in its decimated state and never looked back at it. He won the war but it really was a symbol of his failure as the noble ruler that he aspired to be.
All I can say is I kind of see where the Karni Sena is coming from. Yes the Jodha- Akbar romance seems like the stuff dreams are made up of but she was literally forced to sleep with the enemy for the benefit of her father and brothers and that has to be excruciatingly humiliating. I can only imagine how she must have felt after hearing about the bloodshed and atrocities committed by her husband on her own people. My intention is not to offend anyone here.
