Because BW movies are more for entertainment and very little for education, enlightment, social causes whatever u may want to call them...and when a hard working person goes to watch these movies...with his khoon paseene ki kamai...he wants to escape from the harsh realities of life that he faces every single day...he wants to see good looking actors, music, drama, masala...whatever it takes to make him forget the hard life that he leads...so thats why these actors like Irfan Khan or R Rao...do not work for the normal audience...the kind of movies they do..the kind of roles they play...don't entertain ...

simple reason in bollywood almost all popular movies central plot or one of the major plot out of the all major plots contain a movie revolves on love story. Which sale fantasy of love story. Thats why hero should be either best looking or may be average looks if he have some industry back up. Same wise heroine should have best look . In love story look is more important than acting..
