
Ramadan is the 9th month of Lunar Calendar which consists of 29 or 30 days depends on moon. The entire Muslim nation of almost 2 billion people, men and women, young and old, rich or poor - all together, for a whole month - not eating, not drinking and not having intimate relations, during the daylight hours. This describes the month of Ramadan.
What is fasting?
Fasting / Sawm (Quran 19:26) means "to abstain / to refrain". In Islamic Shari'ah (Law), fasting does not mean only being hungry or thirsty all the day but also to abstain from all forbidden tasks (Eating, drinking, sexual relation with wife during fast, backbiting, vomiting deliberately, using medicines including eye and nose and all type of medicines, fighting and all sort of evil actions) during fast i.e. from dawn to the sunset.

How to fast?
For fasting:-
* Just need to make a sincere attention for the sake of Allah. (There is no authentic supplication is found for Fasting).
* Take meal before dawn (before Fajar) as it is a blessing and also recommended by our Beloved Prophet Mohammad Peace be upon Him. (1)
Fasting has been obligatory in every religion of the world. We can easily find fasting in Christianity, Hinduism and Judaism. Allah informs us the reason of fasting in Quran as follows:-

Some other reasons of fasting besides being obligatory are:
* Fast is training for fasting person and to remind him Allah is watching.
* Fasting is a way that makes us appreciate and give thanks to Allah for blessings.
* Fasting is a way of giving up Haram (forbidden) acts.
* Fasting enables us to control ourselves.
* Fasting makes us feel compassion and empathy towards the poor.
* Fasting humiliates and weakens the Devil.

Who should fast?
All Muslim men, women and children (only they reach the age of adolescence) are supposed to fast during the month Ramadan.
Who is Exempted from Fasting:-
Sick, traveling and old people are exempted from fasting. Sick and traveling people can complete the counting of their fast in other days. If some sick or old person could never fast in life, he / she is exempted from fasting with a condition to feed some poor for 2 times / each fast. (3)
Tasks which may be performed while fasting:-
* Thanks to Allah for the blessings we have.
* Recitation of Quran as much as possible
* Attend Quran classes to increase the knowledge of Quran
* Recitation of Quran may also be played (on mobile, tv etc)
* Paying Zakat / Obligatory tax (in Islam for helping poors).
* Doing Charity as much as possible.
* Participate in building mosque or any Islamic institute
* Arranging Iftar (breaking fast) of poor people or any other fasting person
* Arranging food for needy and poor who cannot afford.
* Spending time in prayers, recitation and making lots of dua / supplications instead of wasting much time in cooking.

* Search Laila tul Qadr (Night of Power / Decree) in the last odd nights of Ramadan
Observe
* Religious Seclusion (I'tikaf) During last odd nights of Ramadan
* Any information regarding ablution (wazu), prayer, or any other information regarding islam may be shared daily before the time of iftar.
* Fasting is fourth pillar of Islam (4)
* Paradise gates are opened in month of Ramadan, Hell gates are closed and devils are chained.(5)
* Revelation of Quran's month (6)
* Layala tul Qadr (The Night of Power / Decree)'s month (7)
* Forgiveness of Sins (8)
* Multiplication of Rewards (Reward of Good deeds is increased by 10%) (9)
* In Ramadan Umrah is equivalent to Hajj (10)
* Fasting is Shield against sins (11)
What is the reward for fasting people?
* Allah will give the Reward by Himself to fasting person. (12)
* Separate Paradise Gate for the Fasting People (13)
* Special reward at the time of breaking fast (the prayers will be accepted at the time of breaking fast. (14)
* Allah makes people free from hell fire at the time of breaking fast (15)
Time of Breaking Fast

Breaking fast must be done immediately after sunset (at Maghrib time) and is not allowed to be delayed. (16)
Supplication / Invocation / for breaking fast.

Reward for arranging Iftar (meal for breaking fast) for others
The person who will arrange iftar (meal for breaking fast) for fasting people; will get the reward like fasting person will receive but the reward of the fasting person will not be decreased. (17)
Punishment of Breaking Fast before prescribed Time
The person who breaks fast without any reason (being sick etc) must free a salve or must observe consecutive fasts for two months or feed sixty poor people. (18) However if someone eats or drinks by mistake while fasting, he / she does not gets the punishment and has to complete his or her fast as usual even after drinking/ eating. (19).
Religious Seclusion (I'tikaf) During Ramadan
Itikaf (staying in Mosque / Masjid for a certain period) is also practiced by our Beloved Prophet Mohammad Peace by upon him in Ramadan so any one who can practice it easily should practice it. (20)

* Fasting before one or two days before Ramadan is not allowed. (21)
* Fasting on Friday without any other fast before or after it. (22)
* Fasting on Eid ul Fitr or Eid ul Adha is not Allowed (23)
* Fasting without eating for other day without uninterrupted fasting, (i.e. not taking meal or water between two fasts). (24)
