I disagree that commercial films like TWMR have no reflection of culture. Absolutely agree it doesnt reflect 100% of India accurately. They are made for the sole purpose of entertainment. But intentionally or not a film makers films do reveal a lot about the film makers thought process, their likes, what they consider to be a break from the hassle of everyday life, what is their version of a fantasy world or their ideal way of life. Their thought process might or might not correlate with the societal culture but they unintentionally do leave behind some of their own personal opinions in a film. And the fact that these movies sell well with the audience also says a lot about the culture. Its why we often study popular Greek or historic plays which were more or less just meant for the purpose of entertainment. But they did leave behind a huge reflection of the culture.
Of course they can not project the culture perfectly and perhaps have no intention do so. But I just disagree that they have no reflection of culture at all. For example Rajishri films like HSSH or HAHK don't project all of indian culture correctly. But I am sure it is the ideal way of life of the film maker. Of what his interpretation of Indian culture embodies. And I am sure that the people who watch and connect with his movies might feel a similar way. Of course it is not a 100% accurate reflection of all of India. But some portions of it for those who watch and relate to his films. IMHO! I feel any form of art imitates life somewhat whether intended to or not.
I feel the response of the audience also reflect a culture? For an example, why a film like Lamhe was rejected in early 1990s. But later DCH of a similar theme was received well. Or why a film like KANK was rejected also are reflections of culture.
