Have you ever experienced such stereotypes?
Yes, I have faced a lot of them. When my song was played during a National Football League (NFL) event, I got a lot of racist comments, such as, "Who's this Arab terrorist?" and "How can she be on NFL, she's not white." I was really offended. I hope the show will help break some stereotypes. I don't think I can break it all alone.
How was the experience of working with a female director, Zoya Akhtar, for the first time?
Zoya is one of the finest film-makers in the country today and that has nothing to do with her gender. What's great about her being a female director is that I can talk to her freely as a girl. I really admire her. She is fearless. It's very difficult for fearless women to survive in the world.
Recently, you tweeted about how happy you were with the fact that woman-centric Bollywood films are doing well.
I was personally very moved, for many reasons. It was the result of my own experience in the past. Producers, in general, and one producer in specific had told me, "If you don't have dates or if you can't accommodate, then girls are inter-changeable. If we don't find a particular one, we will find another one; we will launch a new girl or will bring in a model." I was thrown out of films because some other girl was recommended by a fellow hero. All that had happened to me at the start of my career. I was against the idea and questioned our importance and relevance. I started making different film choices. So, be it Fashion (2008) or Barfi (2012), I tried to do a lot of films that had important, impactful roles for girls. I don't ever want to be told that I am expendable as an artiste. I will do small work, but I'm not expendable just because I am a woman. I want to do one impactful female part each year.
