Balika Vadhu: From Child Marriage To Honour Killing, Why The Show Survives On Indian TV

After child marriage, TV serial Balika Vadhu has now depicted another social evil of honour killing, in the backdrop of Rajasthan.

It's one of the longest running series on Indian television, and yet it continues to rule several hearts across the country. Television channel Colors has been airing Balika Vadhu for the last seven years and the show has been able to survive itself in the mad race of TRP. Ever wondered why?

The show began in July 21, 2008, with a young girl as its protagonist. After seven long years, there's hardly any middle class family in India that does not know Anandi.

Almost everyone watching the show sympathised and felt attached to the Balika Vadhu, played excellently well by Avika Gor.

Based in the backdrop of Rajasthan, the story of the series touched nerves of viewers as it portrayed the social menace of child marriage with utmost sensitivity. Almost everyone watching the show sympathised and felt attached to the Balika Vadhu, played excellently well by Avika Gor.

It communicated how child marriage impacted an innocent mind and what all she had to go through, unaware of what she was pushed into in the name of tradition. And it didn't end there.

The TV serial went on to showcase how even relationships suffered because of child marriage as the protagonists, Anandi and Jagiya, grew up.

And now, the serial has depicted another social evil of honour killing. A father was seen killing a man who eloped with his daughter, just because he was not of the same caste and stature. The father was also about to kill his daughter just when she was saved by her aunty, played by popular actor Rajeshwari Sachdev who enacted a Mata' to prevent the life of the girl being taken.

In a state like Rajasthan, while child marriage has been rampant in the name of tradition, there have been several instances of honour killing as well. There have been loss of several lives and hopes because of these social evils, yet it has failed to stop.

And how can we forget the quotes at the end of each episode, giving a message that's aptly relevant with the content of the show as well as the realities of life.

Probably, Indian television needs more such shows highlight the evils of the society, and at the same, raises a strong voice against them.

Nice to see child anandi and child Jagya. So cute and happy.

And akhiraj is given such a prominent place! Sure he is making waves as the quintessential villain.

The serial is being written about because of the issues, not anybody's presence or acting prowess though they are also important. The actors are the messengers carrying message.

The main focus will always be on Avika and Avinash as child couple.

Even dadisa is not there anymore.

Honour killing is something they didn't deal with it before. But it would be nice if they incorporate in the story and take it forward.
Right now it looks just like they selected one of the most barbaric practices to establish Akheraj as a villain

Don't think they are going to show Gopal's family doing anything other than crying.

Looks like they will try to silence Nimboli.

It would be more meaningful if they use this issue to bring Nimboli and Anandi closer and them fighting for Gopal's family.

Good that they didn't show grown up Anandi and Jagya 😛

But the focus moved on from Anandi's child marriage to Anandi's daughter's child marriage. They should have put Nandin and her Kundan's picture.

Now it is more about Anandi trying to save her daughter from child marriage and make up for the lost time

The only way Jagya and Anandi's past will be in focus is through Kacchi umar ki pakke rishte from which Anandi has moved out

No one can take the place of the main actors, not even their children. That was the one phase without filmy elelments being introduced for trps.

No one can take anyone's place.
The newer ones are making their own place.

But the story has moved on from them and their relationship.

If we go by what Colors channel and the PH say about BV it is Anandi's journey. So she remains constant and as she moves forward some people move away from her and some become very important

The people who are most important to her now are her children. She lost her husband and her children represent that love she had once in her life.

If Singhs are still there in her life because she has certain fondness for them finds it difficult to say no to them and their demands. But what they do with their lives is of no consequences to her and her life and her decisions are not based on her equation with them. So Singhs don't form a part of her story any more.

If Shekhars are not part of her life it is because they moved away from her.

For anandi, it is her work that is more important than even her children. Her children will only be distractions in her larger picture. A pleasant distraction. Take away her work, she will be another mother. Nothing special.

In the context of the character's journey and in the story.

Her children are the most important relationship to her in this phase of the journey and probably for the rest of her life. Not just most important relationship but they are inseparable from her life.

Children are not just a distraction for her if so she won't equate the restlessness she feels in her heart and mind with a trouble in her daughter's life whom she had not seen.

Is it her work or rather is it her commitment to the social causes? That always remains no 1 in her life.
