It is not rude in bigger and crowded cities even here to not initiate the greeting. I think it is very rude however, when someone greets you and you don't respond.
I am so used to greeting strangers now, that in India, I surprise strangers.. Once a woman even asked me " Do I know you? ๐ญ "
Must be a chain marketier, ohh how much i hate them, atleast the point when they say, come to our seminar for home business. One should be happy atleast Indian greeted, am toh given up. Not sure the reason but south asians seldom respond to greeting.
Greetings is way to acknoeledge presence of another individual, nice gesture. It's a cultural aspect, might be considered as rude if one doesn't participate.

I hate it if people just pass by and ignore each other, just say hi and smile at them, you might make them happier and you'll make yourself feel more satified and confident ๐

Awww.. I can totally imagine that cutes. If you are in an elevator in India with some random dude and if you say hello to show some politeness and courtesy, your politeness will be taken in quite an interesting way. The whole greeting strangers thing doesn't go well with Indians in India.. afterall itna bada desh hai afterall, kitne kitno ko greet karega ek aam aadmi!?!
But overall, I think Be Roman in Rome. Since western countries believe in greeting strangers, so be it! Do that so you don't stand back and also because there is nothing wrong in it. And since we get stares in India, we should just let it go... If the strager we didn't greet turns out to be your future boss, it's not like s/he is going to judge you, since the greeting system is just not prevelant.

It bugs me that some desis stare and stare and stare more to glory (men and women with different expression ๐), but do not work their levator labii superioris and others.. when you look back in thier eyes.
Helllo!!!! You stared anyway as if someone were a painting, then atleast give them a smile dude / dudette!
