There were not too many promotions for Kahaani. Vidya was the only known face. The NA was announced soon after its release and that I think helped Kahaani a bit apart from the fantastic WOM.
I dunno about anyone else but I atleast go for Vidya's movies just for her alone.
Heroine and Jism2 didnt have successful music but opened well I think due to lots of skin show.
I think the film which really did well significantly without anything driving it was Mary Kom. Its trailer was well received but music wasnt such a hit. Ofcourse there was curiosity about MK's biopic. But it still managed a 8cr opening. The film itself was terrible so it couldnt do well in the ling run.
Music helps a lot...it helps the Khans too. Without good music they can get a 20cr opening...otherwise 25cr opening. YJHD's single biggest factor for a good opening was the music. That apart it looked like a stylish film and guilty pleasure which we dont see much these days.
A2 was again having music as a major factor apart from Shraddha-ARK chemistry.

Going by that logic, HAK should open really well cos it has two NA winners😆 This is exactly why am confused as to what factors play a part & what don't..I guess we'l get a better picture once her next film releases..

Because Kusum's charecter struck a chord with the audience right from the beginning itself. I don't know about elsewhere, but around me people at least took a couple of minutes to appreciate Kangana's Haryanvi in this movie after watching the trailer. Pre-Queen or Pre-NA Kangana wouldn't have garnered this much attention or wouldn't have pulled the audience to the theater on then first day itself. Coming to the songs, except for Banno none of the songs are 'chart busters' actually. So yeah, the NA-The Trailer everything just came at the right time and fit in perfectly.

The trailer definitely intrigued without giving out much. That and the Banno song helped. It also helped that it was a sequel though I think TWM wasnt really really successful.
Anyways its great that many films with women in central roles or important roles are doing well-DLKH, NH10, Piku and now TWMR. Its great for BW in general. And back to how it used to be in the 90s and 2000s.

Also these non-masala films thankfully give a reason for women and families to go back to watching movies in the cinemas. Else the cinema in BW and its audiences had become too male dominated.

I think like someone mentioned, Vidya really did bring the change in a way..It was only post the success of TDP & Kahaani that so many women-oriented films got to be made..Now its a reached a stage where if you have a reasonably saleable heroine & a good script at hand, you can atleast be rest assured that it'l recover its cost..

For me Vidya still has the biggest draw ...and that has been so since Parineeta ! That was a sparkling performance that touched the heartstrings. After that she went through a trough largely because of poor film selection...and just when I was beginning to write her off as a one film wonder she came back with a bang ...a series of good , content based films that have given her a hallowed place in BW.
PC has gone from strength to strength with some power packed performances setting audience expectations very high. She will continue to rule for some time at least.
Kangana is the new kid on the block and it is for all to see that she is a wonderful actress. But I feel she has a lot to cover to put her in the same bracket as VB & PC despite the NA. She needs to shine in serious roles too and not just ride the crest evoking laughter in the auditorium . I have no doubt that she will deliver soon enough on that front as well.
Till such time it is VB who rules as the opening day temptress among the female leads !

Thats true...there were lots of heroine oriented movies made earlier. But her movies actually made some proper amount of money vs the investment. Vidya made the audiences take heroine oriented movies seriously ie they are not boring preachy movies.

But I hope she continues doing these light-hearted roles, at least for a while. We have seen her in way too many crazy serious roles. 😆

The truth is that the "Vidya effect" is yet to be seen.

For example, Queen was completely shot in 2012, and released in 2014. It was not only conceptualised many years before it's release but the pre-pdocution was done well before Vidya began scoring big.

Even English Vinglish was complete a full year before it was released, and hence before "Vidya effect".

But upon release, it was said that Vidya created an effect on female oriented films.

Female powered films have always been around. Although credit should be given to Vidya as she has been the leader of the pack, and has in fact managed to give more attention to the films that would be ignored.

I think in the next few years we will see the effect of this trend more and more...
