Even though the scale of films for male stars is much bigger (in terms of budgets), Bollywood's leading ladies have been giving the men a huge run for their money at the box office when it comes to return on investment. While most films with female protagonists were labelled as off-beat some years ago, today's heroines have taken on the mantle of making their films commercially viable, while staying content-driven. A lot of male actors have failed to balance commerce with good quality cinema.

The opening day collections show whether people want to come in to watch a certain star's films, and should be a big barometer for understanding who the box office queens really are. Here's looking at who the top Bollywood BO queen's are based on the opening day collections of their films.

No. 1) Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka has 3 high opening weekend films to her name and 2 in the top 5, giving her the top spot in this list. Also, she was the first actress of this generation to have scored a huge hit as the leading female protagonist with "Fashion" in 2008, with an opening day of Rs. 7 crore - the highest for a female-led film at that time.

Even "7 Khoon Maaf" made Rs. 3.1 crores, which is higher than what a film like "Queen" did on the first day. But "Mary Kom" broke her previous records. The film, which saw Priyanka play the role of boxer M.C. Mary Kom, won over the audience and made Rs. 8.5 crore on its first day itself.

Day 1 total (for hits): Rs. 18.6 crore

No. 2) Vidya Balan

Vidya's "The Dirty Picture" remains the highest grossing female-led film on day 1 at the box office. The film had made a whopping Rs. 9.35 crores on the opening day. She also starred in "Kahaani" which did decently well by making Rs. 2.59 crore on the 1st day and "No One Killed Jessica," which released before "The Dirty Picture," made Rs. 3.25 crore.

Day 1 total (for hits): Rs. 15.19 crore

No. 3) Kangana Ranaut

"Tanu Weds Manu Returns" has made Rs. 9 crore on day 1 (according to initial reports), which is a huge leap for Kangana, considering that even though "Queen" was much appreciated and finally was declared a hit, it only made Rs. 1.50 crore on its opening day. With her outstanding performance in "Tanu Weds Manu Returns," she has managed to now grab the no. 3 spot on this list.

Day 1 Total (for hits): Rs. 10.6 crore

No. 4) Rani Mukerji

On the 1st day, Rani's hard-hitting film "Mardaani," which had her playing the role of a cop, made Rs. 3.75 crore. Her 2011 release "No One Killed Jessica" became a decent success and had made Rs. 3.25 crore on day 1.

Day 1 Total (for hits): Rs. 7 crore

No. 5) Deepika Padukone

Deepika had great support from Amitabh Bachchan in bringing the audience to the theaters. But considering it was mainly riding on Deepika's performance, the success of the film does need to be attributed to her. The film opened with Rs. 5.5 crores. Anushka narrowly missed on this spot as her "NH10" made Rs. 3.34 crore on day 1.

Day 1 Total (for hits): Rs. 5.5 crore

TOP 10 highest opening day films (women-led) in the last decade that went on to become hits:

1) The Dirty Picture - Rs. 9.35 crore (2011)

2) Tanu Weds Manu Returns - Rs. 9 crore (2015) (Initial report)

3) Mary Kom - Rs. 8.5 (2014)

4) Fashion - Rs. 7 crore (2008)

5) Piku - Rs. 5.5 crore (2015)

6) Mardaani - Rs. 3.75 crore (2014)

7) NH10 - Rs. 3.35 crore (2015)

8) No One Killed Jessica - Rs. 3.25 crore (2011)

9) Saat Khoon Maaf - Rs. 3.1 crore (2011)

10) Kahaani - Rs. 2.59 crore (2012)

PC's Pr started it again. priyanka is just like our female version of Srk how smart of the PR to not mention the screen count of all the releases. Marykom had almost 2800 screens, TWMR had 2200 screens and Piku had 1400 screens and NH10 had 1200 screens. With 2800 screens PC's opening was not that big. What was the lifetime of Marykom that was taxfree and had the biggest release size. What about Pc's Zanjeer? Let kangana shine its her time she proved it with better films than PC and better boxoffice rewards.

Almost every single film here which has had 5 or 6+ opening had a good/ intriguing trailer, great pre-release buzz, good songs/ promotions etc. Dirty Picture opened at 9 crores but post that almost every single film of Vidya's hasn't exactly opened well ( Kahaani sustained mainly because of brilliant WOM)..Same with Kareena whose Heroine opened at 8 crores but a couple of films later, GTPM's opening was as dismal as 1 crore..Kangana herself has delivered two disasters after Queen & finally got it right with TWMR..This is why am really confused about the star power of these actors..I'd love to see the opening of Kangy's next film..Not being cynical or putting her down..Am just curious to see if the NA & the good work she has done has altered her BO clout in a significant manner..

Of course, for smaller films it's the trailers and songs which play a huge role in attracting the audience. But even to pull crowds to the theater, you need a credible face ensuring you all such things. National award did provide the required credibility in Kangana's case. All the regional papers and magazines covered her interviews and she is a more recognized face now...whose movies can be watched in the theatre. TWMR just came at the right time. And I'm glad it did. She is definitely not a bigger star than Deepika or PC but she is developing a connect with the audience slowly and steadily. I just hope she chooses her roles wisely from here.

Yeah thats why i mentioned that TDP was a one off & none of Vidya's films have opeened that well..Kahaani was a thriller though & it had no popular/ chart-buster songs..Did they promote it well? 😕 I don remember..Ppl often underestimate the importance of good songs..Probably not relevant for a Khan film but say a YJHD or A2, the songs were the biggest contributor..All things aside, female-oriented films clocking 8 or 9 crores on the opening day is a big deal i guess..Cos a lot of male stars don manage that these days..

Vidya won an NA for TDP too but that din really help the opening numbers of any of her films right? Going by that logic, HAK should open really well cos it has two NA winners 😆 This is exactly why am confused as to what factors play a part & what don't..I guess we'l get a better picture once her next film releases..
