Even though the scale of films for male stars is much bigger (in terms of budgets), Bollywood's leading ladies have been giving the men a huge run for their money at the box office when it comes to return on investment. While most films with female protagonists were labelled as off-beat some years ago, today's heroines have taken on the mantle of making their films commercially viable, while staying content-driven. A lot of male actors have failed to balance commerce with good quality cinema.
The opening day collections show whether people want to come in to watch a certain star's films, and should be a big barometer for understanding who the box office queens really are. Here's looking at who the top Bollywood BO queen's are based on the opening day collections of their films.
No. 1) Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka has 3 high opening weekend films to her name and 2 in the top 5, giving her the top spot in this list. Also, she was the first actress of this generation to have scored a huge hit as the leading female protagonist with "Fashion" in 2008, with an opening day of Rs. 7 crore - the highest for a female-led film at that time.
Even "7 Khoon Maaf" made Rs. 3.1 crores, which is higher than what a film like "Queen" did on the first day. But "Mary Kom" broke her previous records. The film, which saw Priyanka play the role of boxer M.C. Mary Kom, won over the audience and made Rs. 8.5 crore on its first day itself.
Day 1 total (for hits): Rs. 18.6 crore
No. 2) Vidya Balan
Vidya's "The Dirty Picture" remains the highest grossing female-led film on day 1 at the box office. The film had made a whopping Rs. 9.35 crores on the opening day. She also starred in "Kahaani" which did decently well by making Rs. 2.59 crore on the 1st day and "No One Killed Jessica," which released before "The Dirty Picture," made Rs. 3.25 crore.
Day 1 total (for hits): Rs. 15.19 crore
No. 3) Kangana Ranaut
"Tanu Weds Manu Returns" has made Rs. 9 crore on day 1 (according to initial reports), which is a huge leap for Kangana, considering that even though "Queen" was much appreciated and finally was declared a hit, it only made Rs. 1.50 crore on its opening day. With her outstanding performance in "Tanu Weds Manu Returns," she has managed to now grab the no. 3 spot on this list.
Day 1 Total (for hits): Rs. 10.6 crore
No. 4) Rani Mukerji
On the 1st day, Rani's hard-hitting film "Mardaani," which had her playing the role of a cop, made Rs. 3.75 crore. Her 2011 release "No One Killed Jessica" became a decent success and had made Rs. 3.25 crore on day 1.
Day 1 Total (for hits): Rs. 7 crore
No. 5) Deepika Padukone
Deepika had great support from Amitabh Bachchan in bringing the audience to the theaters. But considering it was mainly riding on Deepika's performance, the success of the film does need to be attributed to her. The film opened with Rs. 5.5 crores. Anushka narrowly missed on this spot as her "NH10" made Rs. 3.34 crore on day 1.
Day 1 Total (for hits): Rs. 5.5 crore
