What do you think of the contemporary playback singers in Bollywood?

Sunidhi Chauhan works hard on her voice and has good technique. Shreya Ghosal has a pretty voice. But somehow something is missing. The Je ne sais quoi...the wow factor.

So which voices according to you have the wow factor?

Atif Aslam, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Adnan Sami...Well, all the Pakistani singers. Pure magic. Junooni awaazen hain.

There are people in India who think Pakistani singers should be banned?

The call for a ban is too politically motivated. I can understand Indian sentiments regarding this matter. But music should heal and transcend barriers between countries.

Priyanka Chopra is singing abroad?

Priyanka has a sexy voice. Singing, I'm not sure. I haven't heard her. Would love to hear the album.

Vishal Dadlani once said, you have a good voice. But you're a bad singer.

Ha ha. That's seriously funny considering they called me to sing. I'm the hit-maker, baby. The star of the song. Besides, these guys are not the Beethoven of Bollywood. If you are sooo good why do you need to lift foreign grooves? They called me to sing their song. All I said was, I was not interested or inspired to sing for Bollywood. The fame doesn't excite me. So please ask the producers to pay me my price or simply f...k off. Keep the change.

You seem to have raised a hornest's nest by refusing to sing for Vishal-Shekhar for the price they offered you?

Which part of my NO' did they fail to understand or appreciate? Sorry, if I bruised their Himalayan egos.

Why are you unhappy with being a ghost voice. Weren't you glad to see Aishwarya and Katrina take your songs Kajra re and Tera hone laga to millions?

No, I am against the lip-synching in the Bollywood mocktail. It doesn't do justice to the singer or the actress. The singer gets relegated to being a ghost voice and the actress just looks very pretty. But also very silly hamming up in the song-and-dance routine.

Any composers today that you respect and would like to work with?

The great A R Rahman of course! He has great production skills. I like Anu Malik's melodies. They are hooky and mushy. Shankar-Ehasan-Loy are good too. Shankar is a very good singer and producer too.

You have remained single all these years?

I am at a happy place. It's far less complicated and troublesome. Relationships are too fragile and transitory these days. Nothing lasts.

Don't you miss a companion?

Yeah sure I do! But it's important to find the right man. I think I will find him soon.

If you have someone like Alisha whose voice has such zing to it, then it's obvious she won't like Shreya much.

Even for Sunidhi she has just said she works hard.

I agree on Shreya. I find her wannabe Lata. She copies her a lot. She lacks versatility. Sometimes her voice sounds tooo sweet.

Alisha has distinct voice. I also feel singers should be unique, have a voice that has own different feel. Kumar Sanu was a Kishore Kumar wannabe but Udit Narayan was different.

I know Alisha sounds rather outspoken in this interview but I can't disagree much with her. She was indeed the star of her songs. Her albums were RAGE in 90s. And she didn't even need any model because she looked so good herself!

I can sense from this IV why her career didn't go that far in films. She's too headstrong.

I wish era of music albums and Indipop came back. The voices were fresh and music was refreshing change from routine film tunes. Filmi music still has its own limitations. Not much scope for experiments.

Alisha voice I simply love her voice n het pop songs too bad we don't get her pop songs now. Agree about Pakistan awaazien they got the best voice specially if u talk about pop Sufi folk qawali rock ots like gems out there be it late reshma late nusrat fateh late noorjahan ji .ali azmat junaid jamshed Bilal Ahmed atif Komal hadeeqa zeb Tina sani munni begun just love them

Alisha had a great voice. Her songs were so popular in the 90s. I ve always been a lover for distinct voices. Precisely why I never liked Shreya. Her voice is just too sweet.

We need singers with distinct voices in bolly. Or else all songs would sound the same.

And its true, playback singing doesnt really do complete justice to the singers. They get lost somewhere in the limelight.

Moreover Alisha is so pretty herself. She needs no actress lip syncing for her.

Man,Made in India was such a great song.

This is so true.

It's kinda sad that India doesn't have a thriving music industry outside of films. That way the singers could be stars in their own right without having to sell out to bollywood.
