Seventy Four

Words couldn't describe what Randhir was feeling right now. He was stunned. He didn't even have time to register what was happening. Dhruv was his child? Sanyukta was Dhruv's mom... and Sanyukta was standing here in front of him right now?

Five years had passed, and it took one glance at Sanyukta for him to feel an overwhelming weight being lifted from his heart. It was like this one glance at her had cured all the loneliness he felt during the last five years.

"Dhruv, you can't call everyone on the street your dad," Sanyukta said simply. "Go inside, to your room."

"Mom but the picture --" Dhruv started, but was cut off by Sanyukta.

"I said go to your room," Sanyukta said sternly.

Dhruv looked down and then nodded before heading into Sanyukta's house.

She looked up at Randhir, and both of their eyes met for a few moments, as they stayed silent. Finally, Sanyukta broke the silence.

"I don't know why you're here, but we can discuss it inside," she said. "Come in."

Randhir nodded, he was in a trance. Everything he hadn't expected was happening and he just couldn't comprehend any of it.

Sanyukta lead him inside and then closed the door shut behind him. He sat down on the sofa in the living room and she stood up in front of him, her arms crossed.

"Do you want something to eat or drink?" she asked him, her tone unwelcoming.

"I'm okay," Randhir said, not wanting to take anything from someone who didn't want to feed him.

She sat down beside him on the sofa, leaving a huge gap between them.

"So why are you here?" she asked, looking at him.

"It's a free country, I'm allowed to roam around wherever I choose to," Randhir said lightly, but she continued to look at him with her icy cold gaze.

"Okay... well don't listen to Dhruv. He calls everyone he meets on the street his dad," Sanyukta explained.

"Why? Doesn't he have a dad? Where's Rehaan?" Randhir asked, glancing at her sindoor.

Sanyukta shot Randhir an even icier look.

"He has a dad, but I am not liable to answer any of your questions," Sanyukta told him. "So don't ask."

"Well... okay," Randhir said, his voice steady.

She had every right to hate him after all.

"How did you get out?" Sanyukta asked.

"Some girls gave evidence of him being a man who lured girls," Randhir explained. "So they reduced my sentence and took me out."

"Interesting," Sanyukta said. "Do you have a place to go? A home? Anywhere to stay?"

He shook his head.

"Not at the moment," he stated. "But I'll figure something out."

"You can stay here," Sanyukta said to him, causing Randhir to look at her in shock. "But... on a few conditions."

"It's okay," he mumbled in response. "I don't want to be a burden."

"It's the least I can do for you going through five years of imprisonment for a crime I committed," Sanyukta said. "So just stay... at least I'll feel less guilty."

"Alright," Randhir said, unable to say no to her. "What are the conditions?"

"You pretend to be Dhruv's dad... not for a long time. He has always wanted a fatherly figure and Rehaan isn't here," Sanyukta explained. "He's a mature and understanding boy, but I want to make him happy."

"Won't he be upset when I leave?" Randhir asked. "It'd hurt him more."

"Look Randhir, that's my condition. I don't expect any arguments. It won't hurt him more because I know what I'm doing," Sanyukta said to him, looking at him coldly again.

Randhir nodded and decided to just keep his mouth shut.

"Second condition... you'll live in my bedroom, otherwise it'll look suspicious. Dhruv has the other room. We're married... or at least, in front of Dhruv," Sanyukta said, her tone dark. "Can you do that for me?"

Randhir looked into her eyes - he wondered what had happened with her to bring her to this position? To have to pretend in front of her own son? To have to bring a man from outside to pose as his dad? Where was Rehaan? The sindoor she had on was in Rehaan's name right?

"But... Rehaan," Randhir said, shocked at what was happening.

"I told you, those are my conditions. Do you accept or not?" she snapped.

Randhir looked into her eyes and he couldn't help it. He loved her. How could he say no to her? She said she knew what she was doing, and he trusted her.

"Yes, I accept," Randhir answered.

"Great. You can make yourself at home here then," Sanyukta said, her tone still icy.

Randhir smiled at her. She didn't smile back.
