i read in an indian newspaper three four days ago that the slums in india have doubled. unfortunately i dont have the link to that article. i am not sure if anyone of you came across that article. its kind of alarming issue which shocked me. i was expecting slums to go down, on the contrary it said the slums have doubled over the past decades. what are the reasons for the slums to be on the rise? can it be curbed?

nice post raunaq-

slums are forever the way i see. not only because of immigration of people from their villages to cities, but also because of the clandestine venues they provide for underworld / other criminal activities. sometimes, slums are converted into high rises / similar buildings, but contracters and others use these as opportunities to gather more black money. a lot of these developments are aimed at betterment of politicians rather than poor slum dwellers.
the gap between rich and poor is one huge issue that our economy faces and wll continue to. The sorrowful harsh reality of real slum life affects only the real poor.
on the other hand, we have these mllionaires in dharavi .

The main reasons for rise of slums are

* Poverty
* Population growth
* Migration to the cities
* Home in the vicinity of work (like mill workers)
* Beggar rackets and illegal activities

Other than that there are many vested interests for politicians and underworld in keeping these slums. For politicians this is a major vote bank. They fulfill their basic needs and in turn get votes, free campaigners and even dummies for political games. For the underworld it is the convenience to carry out illegal activities. The beggar racket is also on the rise and one of the most profitable businesses in India. Their link ups reach to highest levels of bureaucracy.

Very Nice Topic 👏

I understand slums are not good but they have been there for ages and eliminating slums in few areas won't be long term solution as new colonies will form soon. Govt should come up with some workable / robust / long term solutions.BTW - underworld activities is a plague won't cease even after slums are eliminated.

Rehab in a non corrupted environment would have been something to vote for, but here I don't know, it sounds more like a money earning scheme of Builder + Govt, at this point am not even sure whether govt. will fulfill what is promised to this very low income group of people.Really want slums to be converted in sky scapers but after hearing Govt + Builder, somehow don't have a good feeling about it

out of every post, this post beats me especially the reason about population growth, i was thinking about it few days ago and pretty amazed to know why the population is growing rather than being checked. think about it. gone are the agriculture days where higher population was more of a "necessity", whats the reason for population to be high in the recent years? obviously if population grows, poverty increases, which increases the number of slums so the root cause, population, someone please elaborate on this issue, its understandable how in the past population was high, but in this modern age, is there a need for high population?

We already have more than a billion people and if they ahve at least 2 kids still population will be on the rise. Mortality rate is less due to good medical facilities.

Now coming to population rise in slums it is mainly due to

* wanting more kids to help bring more money like boys will help father in mill, shops etc. girls will help mother at home and also go to other houses for housework.

* no proper education

* no proper birth control methods
