Here's my choice. I believe right these ten are the best we have right now irrespective of their box office credentials.

1) Rajkumar Hirani

2) Vishal Bharadwaj

3) Anurag Kashyap

4) Dibakar Bannerjee

5) Zoya Akhtar

6) Imtiaz Ali

7) Anurag Basu

8) Vikas Bahl

9) Neeraj Pandey

10) Reema Kagti

Honorable mentions would include Sujoy Ghosh, Abhishek Choubey, Sujit Sarkar.

Left out Farhan Akhtar as he is busy being an actor and a besura singer and Mani Ratnam since he hasn't made hindi film in long time

I'll add Amol Palekar to the ones you mentioned... He's no 1 on my list.

More or less the same..I'l add Balki ( i have loved most of his films till date), Gauri Shinde ( i know she has just directed EV but i loved the treatment & direction), Motwane ( Udaan is a masterpiece & i liked Lootera too), Ayaan ( yeah i know YJHD was mediocre but WUS is one of my all time favorite films so i'l add him nonetheless cos i still have faith in his story telling skills 😆) & Sriram Raghavan ( he can be brilliant if he wants to)..

I would add Shyam Banegal,

Farhan Akhtar (Dil Chahta for a first film was good) he did have the guts to explore something unconventional of a relationship with an age gap

I don't know most of the movie directors but I do like Farhan Akthar. Sad he's not directing movies anymore. Nobody can beat DCH. Love that movie!

Imtiaz Ali isn't on my list..

Who's the director of Madras Cafe? It was pretty good..direction -wise.
