Hanging on for dear life: A still from Viruddh

Smriti Irani's debut as a television producer has been mired in ontroversies.
From the time Virrudh first aired on Sony, there were talks about low ratings, poor audience feedback and the channel giving the show marching orders.

Loose talk

Time to cheer: Smriti Irani
However, Sony's Executive Vice President and Business Head, Albert Almeida, rubbishes such talk saying, "Virrudh is here to stay.

It is not going off air. These are baseless rumours and I don't know who is spreading them. We have immense faith in the show and will continue to support it."

When asked if Smriti's show is being replaced by a new Balaji show, he says, "We are in talks with Ekta Kapoor for new content, but that doesn't mean that a Balaji show is taking Virrudh's place. "

In fact, we have extended Smriti's contract with us beyond September 2007. Why would we do that if we wanted to wrap up the show?"

Critically acclaimed

Reacting to media reports of fluctuating television ratings, he says, "Virrudh has received immense critical praise. I think now is the time for it to embrace commercial success. It's a well-made show, but it has been weighed down by its stellar cast."

While Smriti was unavailable for comment, sources close to her reveal that she's upset with reports of Virrudh going off air.

"Smriti is fuming because the reports are baseless. She definitely believes there's some foul play involved. Every time the ratings pick up or the story gets a new twist, there is buzz that the show is going off air," says the source.

It is also heard that negotiations are on to dub Virrudh in Tamil and other regional languages for a television network in Southern India.

I am really happy that Sony has at last realised the true worth of virrudh.
I am sure the ektaa camp is spreading all such rumors. we all know the type of lady ektaa is.....we know wat she has done to others who take up work under other production houses or to those who dare to go against her will.
smriti gaining fame without ektaa's patronage is making her jealous.
