PRESENT, MUMBAI, NARIMAN POINT
"Mumbai, the maximum city ! Known among the most populated cities in the world has somewhat to attract the people from whole around, with it's places, lover's carters and avenues, greeny and savage sceneries, surrounded by three of large beaches, with it's contrast of the urban and the rural landscape, the dynamite of a cosmopolite metropolis, with the leading hustle bustle of the central suburbs while on the other side the calm and the yet remaining peace on the seaside despite the bustling of city. Nariman point is kind of similar, aside the bordering skyscrapers, and it's perpendicular angle directlyfacing to the city, it's an ideal nest for lovebirds ! With the splendid view over the sea and the visual treat that gives upon the sunset, lovers come over for a walk along the beach, wetting their feet in the tepid ascentof it, either way to enjoy the thrills of the high waves during the monsoons or to rest back on the rocky bandstand, experiencing the sound of the gushing winds with the gaze fixed toward the teal blue sky of summer !
Lucky them ! ... Who think the sky is unreachable, too over height and above, who can gaze at it, at every moment, without fearing the day when they will reach upon for eternity, without fearing the sound of the clock hand that does tic... tac... for each passing second, minute, hour, day, week, month and year ...
Yes, my life has an expiration date ...
Yes ... my love life has a time limit !
It's much shorter than the others !
So I have no time to waste.
</p>
I have to shine brightly
like the fireworks in the summer sky !
I foundout about this
when I was 8 years old."
FLASHBACK, 8 YEARS BACK, IN HINDUJA NATIONAL HOSPITAL,ON THE CHRISTMAS EVE
"Amazing !" left out an excited young girl, removing the ear tips from her ears and the chest piece of the stethoscope from his chest !
"Your heart's beating really fast !" letting out the made discovery with widened eyes
"Wow.Doctor. I am not so sure why, but ..." apprehended the young boy
"What's wrong ?" anticipated the girl, by closely peering him, making him over more embarrassed
"I am nervous and have a pain in my chest."
"That sounds bad. Let's have a look" enquired the little doctor, acting professional with a very stern and serious face
"Take of your pants. Take of your underwear." she commanded abruptly
"What ?" exclaimed the baffled boy
"Don't be shy ! I'm a doctor, so I am used to it." reassured him
But annoyed by his reticence, she began to do it by herself :
"So, off they go !" and she started pulling off the pants of his pajama ! The boy yet still baffled by the thunder that shook him, tried to resist against the wild doctor and struggled his best not to let his pants tore off by her :
"Whoa, wait a minute !" he begged
"Hurry up !" came the wild little doctor still not letting her grip off his pants
"What're you examining ?" he chided
"I said take them off !" roared the young lioness
"Nurse ! Help !" he left out a loud plead
Suddenly *thuuum*, a line up of fireworks started to arise upon the sky through the window of the sheltered hospital chamber
"It was our first christmas eve together !"
Her attention was all of sudden taken upon that, she deliberately lost her grip on him !
"Jodhaa, fireworks !" he exclaimed on his turn, mesmerized as well
Both of them hurriedly climbed the stairs, to reach the roof top, to get a better view of this unique spectacle !
"Though that was on winter and we were in December, a day before the most awaited Christmas and my birthday, it wasn't snowing at all ! That evening, the sky was of a teal blue like in summer, to let us ravish that instant especially !"
"That's so pretty !" left out an exhilarated Jodhaa, witnessing the magnificent sight of the sky, the teal blue sky of summer
"Yeah, it is !" Jalal responded with the same amount of excitement
"Jodhaa, I'll go get my mom and dad !" and he jumped off the bench toward the stairs. "Grab some snacks on the way !" she shouted, not even blinking to miss a bit of it !
"Okay !" and he began getting down at all allure until the 1st floor, there he started searching for his parents through the windows of cabinets which were still not shuttered at this hour. Finally he found out his parents at Jodhaa's Dad, in Dr. Shvetal's cabinet.
"Found them !" and he ran at his, by leisurely opening the door, to surprise his parents, who were surely planning to celebrate his birthday inside the hospital and seeking for that, Jodhaa's Papa's permission !
Within he reached, that was the 8 aged lad himself who was stricken by the leading conversation !
"You mean Jalal won't recover ?"
"Of course, we haven't lost hope. But please understand that currently there's no known cure ! ... So, this isn't really one but his diet and physical activities, these two must be controlled !"
"But that's just to prolong his life right ?" broke in the father with a choked voice, all emotional for his young lad
The doctor nodded nonchalantly, much to their misery
"If... if we do those things, how... h how much longer will he live ?" whispered on the father with much pain, despite the guilty sobs of his wife. However, he encouraged her to face the truth, by firmly holding her palm in his. In unity they will gain needed strength to face this tragedy, they thought !
"Don't ! We should know the truth !" consoled her husband
"Jalal's heart won't be able to withstand his body's growth. At ... at this rate, he won't be able to... to.. reach 20." hissed the doctor on a desolated tinge. The father rebuked with much difficulty the sigh of agony that seized him, not to let the mother weaken !
Everything happened in front of his eyes, he listened to the whole conversation and the each word started resonating through his ears, vibrating within him ! Not even a tear arose from his eyelids, but seeing his mother crying, his heart pinched for her ! It was on December 24th 2006..., a day before his birthday... Before he turned 9.
Now, should he be happy or sad for turning a year older ?
His attention shifted on his left side when he had begin hearing some sniffs, low but enough hearable !
There she was, in tears too ! Must have heard the entire conversation with me !
</i>
"My love life has a time limit !
No, ... let me rephrase that. Our love life has a ... time limit !"
"That night, much unusual to her habits, she didn't come to me. She didn't come to cont me the tales of Greek mythology, in which I still believe she is an Einstein. Nor did she teach me how to figure out the form of the constellations, among the twinkling stars, through out the shabby window of my chamber. Looked like even the stars got it as they didn't twinkle as brightly as they used to. I closely resented the loneliness in that dooming darkness. She didn't even come for a good night', I thought with a complaining grief !"
Next morning
"Whenever I used to feel low and depressed, I had my own place where to isolate myself from constantly being disturbed by nurses ! That was the sanctuary of Karnala, just in the vicinity of the hospital. It's a secluded place from the rest of Mumbai. Quite high in altitude, a place that seemed as a vast greeny pasture, in the height, facing the flagrant emptiness in the background, with a river nearby."
Jalal felt grief but was relieved at the same time ! Finally he has came out of the suffocation of that endless seventh stay' that was used as pretext by his parents since he was 3 ! At last, he got to know about it, no matter how brutally it reached to him, he thought he should be at peace as the long during suspense was finally over. But he was feeling more helpless and restless as each time the thought of it popped in his mind ! He will die ? He won't reach 20 ? His heart won't be able to withstand his growth ? The little boy was still in a stance that he just couldn't made up his mind over this ! What's death ? What's being alive ? Where will he go once died ? His virgin mind was yet to undergo a big trauma ! As he came trailing until, with those questions turmoiling his inner conscience, he hardly sustained himself from fainting when her sudden sight washed away all those pessimistic thoughts in him ! He found her there, kneeling in between the grasses, brushing away the weeds, cautiously looking for something down there ! Seemed like she has lost something important of her !
"Jodhaa"
"Jalal. Are you better ?"
"Yeah. As long as I don't run. What're you looking for ? Can't you tell ?"
"If I make a wish on a four-leaf clover, then it'll come true."
"I've never heard that before."
"Well I have."
At that, he went to kneel beside her, to participate in the hunt of a four-leaf clover.
"When you find one, what will you wish for ?"
"I don't know yet."
"But you're looking for anyway ?"
"Oh shut up. I was bored because you couldn't play."
After a short while of plain silence, she came up with an intention to taunt him with a tease that he really used to dislike before :
"Still wearing diapers ?" She chuckled, amused by her own tease. Today, her taunt hasn't that same ironical tone, it didn't seem as taunt but was more like a mask to cover up the original topic and may be the reason behind.
"Hey, so if I find a four-leaf clover, can I wish for something too ?"
"What will you wish for ?"
"To become an astronaut when I grow up."
"An astronaut ?" she exclaimed, a bit surprised.
"Than Jodhaa, let's get married."
She fixed him deeply after this, like those mediums, with their intimidating look in their clients' eyes, to tell their future ! With a kind of perplexed look for a while, as wondering about his proposal.
"That's my dream. To become an astronaut and marry you. Then work and home would be fun. We both will always remain happy." he proposed, confidently, with a naif smile.
Her answer, neither seemed to be "Yes, I would like to !" nor "No, I can't foresee it !" Just a plain look, that was reflecting nothing apart from something that's really bothering her. He would find out the matter, he thought ! And continued the research from the all long of the central bottom and now, after hours of exploration, they reached the edge side of the sanctuary.
All of sudden :"Jodhaa ! I found one !"
But before he could invite her to see, she promptly pushed him aside !
She implored the sky, by withdrawing from everything within her that kept her quiet until now :
"Please, god of the four-leaf clover !
Save Jalal ! Don't kill Jalal ! Please, let us be together ! Please, cure his disease ! Please ! Please ! Please ! Please ! Please ! Please !" and she began crying out loudly, unconsolable, worried that the god of four-leaf clover may not pay any heeds to her plead !
"Jodhaa." he shouted, to make her turn to him. Without any surprise, she gave him deaf ears.
He slowly approached and held her shuddered shoulders and deposed a peck on one of her cheek, that immediately silenced her !
Afterward, we had our own wedding ceremony :
I sneaked out of the hospital, with the long white curtain of my chamber, to her awaiting me at the Sanctuary with her Daddy's tool box.
As the veil would be too long for her, she cut the rest half of it, to make me a bow, so that I looked more like a groom and made for herself a disproportionate yet a pretty wedding gown. I pinned her veil, in her bun to make it easier for her to carry it along with her gown. We exchanged the rings fabricated of dandelion, renovated with the help of adhesive. Though nothing certificated and witnessed our marriage, we were bonded to each other by that union, beneath the teal blue sky of December as our witness, bestowing on us it's felicity and best wishes for the near future.
At that time, I didn't understand what death really meant ...
Now a days, Mumbai
Here I'm ! Laying upon the blue covered bed, to which I have been habituated since the childhood. Facing from the 3rd floor of St Mary's hospital, the sea view of Nariman point. It looks as if everything has started from all over again ! At the least exception of her absence. Though we still are living under this teal blue sky, though we were bonded beneath that same sky, now, it looks as the celestial has tricked us, by furnishing us the needed felicity temporarily, on the moment, to banish this benediction later, from our future forever. We are no more bonded to each other, she is no more by me. Or more convenable to say I broke this bond by breaking her heart in thousand of morsels, that she no more be able to reconstitute it and offer me again !
Jodhaa, my beloved. What you may be doing ? What you may be thinking about ? Have you moved ahead ? Did you find the ideal life partner, whom deserves you ? You used to think of me alike a stream of river, which is always coursing forth endlessly, ever unrelenting. But in this unflagging current of river, Haven't I forgotten you behind me ? Meeting me was your bad luck, falling in love with me was your biggest mistake and offering me your heart was your biggest waste ! In this 4 years, there hasn't been an instant where my heart hadn't squeeze for the pain, I have procured you ! The delay of 4 years must have been sufficient to cure that wound by a good encounter, isn't it ?
Your parents were right in demanding me that ! I had to teach you living without me when I'm still here so that once I'm gone, you don't even notice my absence ! You have an entire life and a bright future awaiting you, which you can't compel for a condemned sort !
Flashback, 4 years back
"Jalal, you said before ...
'Slowly approaching one another'...
Walking shoulder to shoulder at the same pace'...
'Telling each other what we like'...
I know what you like, Jalal
Therefore, it's now my turn to tell you what I like.
That's why I brought you here, at the nearby river of the Sanctuary.
This is my favorite spot.
This stream is my favorite place.
It's alike you ...
Always coursing forth endlessly, ever unrelenting.
They looking like they're cuddling.
What we like best ...
is cuddling." and she delicately put in her palm in his as to describe this phenomenon through them.
He rebuked her contact as harshly as he could :
"Jo, can't we just avoid those yielding nonsenses please ?
I have only a short span of time in front of me.
So, just let me breath, let me live, let me experience something new, will you ?"
"Be nice and call me Jodhaa. Will you ? You were much sweeter when we were kids." she retorted, encircling my left arm with her small hands, leaning her head on my sturdy shoulder
"She was making it more grievous."
"And why are you singing this my life, my time song ? Have you forgotten about our taken oath in childhood ? To spend each moment as last and best with each other. We're hubby-wife, don't forget it !"
"Stop narrating the foolish scenario that we built up as kids, again and again, will you ?
It makes me over more embarrassed and remorseful, to see what kind of fool I actually was !
I don't want to waste my left time, through the recreations of this foolishness !
I would like to land through a new adventure, a fresh breath of air !
"And I guess, I can't really find it in you !" and he rudely ejected her nearby :
"Stop being clingy like that !" carefully analyzing the place where she would land and walked off.
As I reached the bridge to quit the place, I heard her yelling for one last time : "I refuse to divorce you !" In such a torn and teary voice that for a time, I felt crestfallen by my own act, and was about to walk back to her. But her mom's words began ringing in my ears :"Son, please teach to this foolish daughter of mine to live without you while you're here !" And I did the inconceivable to constrain her in this piteous state !
I had to oblige my feet to walk away from this place when everything inside me was howling the opposite.
I physically won the warfare, but the truth is, that day I have lost everything !
I think she understood that we broke up ! My last sight of Jodhaa, was her falling collapsed on the flange of river. This time, I couldn't even wipe those tears, provoked by myself. My one word would have been enough to sooth her, but for her welfare after my depart, I had to conceal my feelings and built up this act !
After that, we haven't seen each other for 6 months until she texted me one night :
"Jalal, I'll be waiting for you at our favorite spot by the next morning.
If you don't come, than I will understand to resign on you !"
Jodhaa, my beloved. How long did you wait ? Was that painful ?
Albeit the emergency of your presence in my life, I will remember you only once in a year Jodhaa.
Only on the 25th December, we pledged to gather in St Andrew's cathedral for Christmas' Mass
You must have forgotten it by now, but I can't judge you !
Why would you take at heart a pledge of a jerk ?
I'm turning 17.
Hey, Jodhaa. Tomorrow will be the 9th anniversary.
I do recall it ...
How could I not when the dandelion is still strongly attached to my Venus ..? (the planet of solar system, designing the ring finger)
</font>
<font size="3"><i>St Andrew's Cathedral, on Christmas</font>
<font size="3">Without you, the Christmas Mass doesn't seem that melodious to aspire any warmth or tranquility.</font>
<font size="3">The choir seems unfit for the solemn acapella chant.</font>
<font size="3">They don't place great emphasis on the crescendo.</font>
<font size="3">At the end of it, revisiting one last time the altar of St.Trinity, and deposing at the edge of it, their offerings, devotees begin leaving the church, by it's gloomy aisle, only lightened up with the help of multitude of candles, still not enough to unclasp the leading obscurity.</font>
<font size="3">It's a kind of phenomenon that produced on them. She was those candles, and he, the darkness. She lighting him up was only temporary as the hollowness in which he was plunged was so profound that she just couldn't synchronize with his obscurity. So she was bounded to let it blow off, and he had to assure that it extinguished for well.</font>
<font size="3">As he is lighting up the candles placed on the supremum altar, to give at least a faint glimmer of light inside the dimmed church on Christmas, he hears a gnash of match next to him, participating equally in erasing the gloom.</font>
<font size="3">He has been astonished first, and checked with a wondering face, the moving shadow beside him as he is supposed to be alone in the Cathedral after the devotees left !</font>
<font size="3">May be her ?The thought quits him as fast as it came.</i></font>
<font size="3">In this spiritual and sacred locus, it would be a sin to fantasize for something that isn't fated to belong him.
The place falls in a flat silence, to let two of the devotees worship in peace, to let them gain the inner appeasement of something that they get to confess, to open up toward someone faithful to listen for their requests, their prayers and the sensation of accomplishment and the satisfaction of being heard.
"Have you been happy ?" the unknown voice finally reverberates.
Unknown voice ? Is it really that so ? The asked question seems too familiar to be considered as unfamiliar ?
He turns shocked to his right side as the resonance and the tinge of the voice is immeasurably familiar and known to him. There is the anxiety, the impetuous envy to break the oath he made earlier and yet the craving for that one last encounter being finally accomplished. Secretly, he has been fantasizing for this moment since eternity.
His heart thumps along she removes the toga covering her head.
She is beaming in this radiant aura as an ethereal Goddess. Looks as Heaven has lost a fragment of it in her element. The pale white of the toga gives her an angelic sight. In this 4 years, she has turned into a splendid and elegant adolescent girl.
The disgrace of past flooded back to submerge the mesmerization when tears begin descending her cheeks.
He chokes in emotion as well seeing the tenacity of her long during loyalty but he very well knows that he is awaited to rebuke her once again. "Why are you seeking for sufferance Jodhaa ?" he slowly whispers within himself.
"I have been very happy !" he musters with much gut, to make her disgust him.</font>
<font size="3">"You jerk ! Then how could you dump me ? How dare you look down on me ?"</font>
<font size="3">"Not so fast Jo, please ! That's irritating. Otherwise, do you like my new hairstyle ?" He shows his bonnet.</font>
<font size="3">She doesn't answer. Still overwhelmed and shaken by his reaction.</font>
<font size="3">He thinks to leave while she is in her stance as the pain he is procuring her, is being excruciating to himself.</font>
[I]<font size="3">"Again I have to leave her in tears like a coward !" he blames himself for her condition.</font>
<font size="3">He takes the tenebrous aisle that within he reaches the alley,</i>he is prohibited to step over by her rushed back embrace.</font>
<i><font size="3">"I felt Jalal's warmth.</font>
<font size="3">Jalal's still alive.</font>
<font size="3">He's alive and well.</font>
<font size="3">I've finally realized that this if of utmost importance to me...</font>
<font size="3">After winding down so many twisted paths..."</font>
<font size="3">"Yes, I like it very much !" she precipitates her response.</font>
<font size="3">"But I have only 3 months to ..." hissed his angst.</font>
<font size="3">"I didn't love you lesser in past and nor I do now !"</font>
<font size="3">The lack of her affection missed him dearly that he unawarely gives up to her this time.</font>
<font size="3">He has wasted 4 years without her but this lasting 3 months, he will cherish it happily with her, he thinks and lovingly responds her back. Both hands intertwine their fingers and the dandelion of both Venus finally meet each other.</font>
<font size="3">Few weeks later</font>
<font size="3">"We're together nearly everyday.</font>
<font size="3">Just like ...</font>
<font size="3">making up for the time when we were apart."</font>
<font size="3">As days pass, Jodhaa grows more worried and stressful for Jalal's condition. Though she has convinced him as well as she could, she still remembers, when he told her about his left days : 3 months. Since they have been together, he has never reminisced the topic, fearing it mays make her unhappy. But what she fears the most is that, he comes to die alone, without notifying her.</font>
<font size="3">Suddenly, he wakes up, disturbed by a nausea feeling and a piercing stomach pain :</font>
<font size="3">"Jodhaa, I need to throw up !"</font>
<font size="3">She hurries the utensil beneath him and massages his back to make him feel better while addressing a silent pray to the Almighty.</font>
<font size="3">An hour later</font>
<font size="3">The nurse comes to take him to the scan room.</font>
<font size="3">"Wrong-timing again !" winces the 17 aged boy, again disturbed with his Dulcinea.</font>
<font size="3">As she pushes the wheelchair toward the door, Jalal tends her a reassuring smile of "Don't worry, I'll be well soon !"</font>
<font size="3">As soon as he leaves, she starts knitting a wool pull for him as gift for their late 9th anniversary and his birthday.</font>
<font size="3">Her stomach growls to an unknown worry and contracts nervous at the vision of the emptily covered bed. She embraces tightly the knitted rest in apprehension for an awaiting dread.</font>
<font size="3">"Asclepius, the god of medicine and of miraculous heals,</font>
<font size="3">as you saved the great Phyloctetes from a snake bite, during the Trojan war,</font>
<font size="3">please apply such miracle on Jalal too.</font>
<font size="3">Please don't take him away.</font>
<font size="3">You can give me any kind of tribulation.</font>
<font size="3">Just don't take Jalal away, please.</font>
<font size="3">Please...</font>
<font size="3">Let it be a miracle.</font>
<font size="3">The teal blue sky of summer that Jalal is very fond of and venerates,</font>
<font size="3">please apologize for your misdeed toward us by curing him ..."</font>
<font size="3">While in the scan room, it's an all different ambiance than of a miracle.</font>
<font size="3">"How is our Jalal ?" enquires the father.</font>
<font size="3">"His situation isn't optimistic.</font>
<font size="3">His immunity is dropping.</font>
<font size="3">Why doesn't he go home and enjoy his remaining days ?" comes the wise and practical advice of doctor to the saddened parents.
Jalal's chamber
</font>
"I am persisting till the end !
<font size="3">My life doesn't only belong to me,
half of it belongs to Jodhaa.
That's why I won't give up on the treatments." he declares confidently. But as soon as he hears her approaching, he shushes his parents.
"Good news Jodhaa. Doctor says he found me a donor !" he smiles as gleefully as he can pretend to be, shocking his parents but lifting her to the skies of weal.
"Is... is it true ?" she says, unintentionally oppressing him by the collar in euphoria.
"Now that I can be cured, are you willing to waste this golden chance by suffocating me ?" he teases.
"Keep blabbering. Whatever you may say, now, everything seems sweet and melodious to my ears." and she embraces him tightly, relishing the pleasure that he provided her by this news and murmurs in her imaginative stance of a dreamy life, with the tears of zeal rolling down her cheeks and wetting his patient's chemise.</font>
<font size="3">At one side, her happiness knows no bounds and beyonds meanwhile, on the other side, her reaction scatters more pinches of salt over his wound, making it undeniably agonizing.</font>
<font size="3">The parents leave them for their intimacy, and leave their son cherish the last moments with his soulmate.
</font>
"But how ? When will you be operated ?"
</font>
