JODHPUR: For the past six years, Maniben Prabhubai and her sisters take turns to tie the rakhi to brother Narayan Danjibai, serving 10 years in prison. Her chance comes once in three years.

Last night, she took the 10 o'clock train from Gandhinagar in Gujarat carrying her second child in her lap born a year ago. But if your brother is not a Bollywood star, tying a rakhi can be tough in Jodhpur Central Jail.

So, even after receiving the visitor's slip, Maniben had to wait under the fierce August sun and endure the shoving and pushing of the police for over four hours. The same fate awaited hundreds of other sisters of a lesser god — women of all ages who had come in their shimmering ghagra-cholis from faraway Jhalawar, Jaisalmer, Bhilwara and Kota to meet their imprisoned brothers.

None of them though were permitted to enter the prison before the family of actor Salman Khan, whose bail application is up for hearing in the Rajasthan High Court here on Wednesday, arrived in their now-familiar black Hyundai Terracan at 11.55 am.

Only after an unshaven father Salim Khan, mother Salma and sisters Alvira and Arpita, the latter carrying a box of sweets and rakhi, stepped into the jail premises that the first batch of 'ordinary' sisters was allowed inside.

The contrast was stark. Many of those waiting were relatives of those who had spent years behind bars — and who were expected to be in prison for many more days. On the other hand, Salman, sentenced to five years for poaching chinkaras, has been in prison since Saturday and could be out on bail this week. Yet for the jail authorities, there was no first-come-first-served principle at work.

Salman's family emerged from the jail after 80 minutes. Jail authorities, however, said that the actual meeting time was only 20 minutes. That appears unlikely though. Others coming out of jail said they were asked to leave after spending barely five minutes with their brothers. That apart, on Raksha Bandhan, only women are generally allowed to meet their friends and relatives. Salman's father, however, was an exception.

Wednesday will be a crucial day for the Bollywood hunk. He could taste freedom. Or, he could still be in prison for a few more days.

As for Maniben Prabhubai from Gandhinagar, her brother will be in jail for a few more years. Next time she won't be coming on this festive day; it would be another sister's turn. But she won't forget this Raksha Bandhan in a hurry.
