Sixteen

"I... I need you," he said, before he gulped.

She looked up at him in shock. Then he licked his lips nervously and said, "I mean I... I want you," he said, "To... to tell me how much is rent? And to give me the contract."

She looked at him and smiled, before she asked him, "What's there to be nervous about?"

"Nervous? I'm not nervous," he said, faking confidence.

She giggled, "Alright then. Don't worry, I'll have the contract papers ready for you first thing tomorrow."

He nodded.

"Okay."

Then she turned around to leave.

"If you want anything," she said, stopping at the doorway, "Or need anything... then I'm in the room across from you."

Randhir nodded and watched as she left. As he started to unpack his bags, he started to question himself - damn, why was he so nervous? Why was he so attracted to her? And most importantly, why did he easily forget he hated her? Was it guilt or was it something else?

Randhir lay down in bed and closed his eyes, trying to take deep breaths to calm himself down. Why had the day been such a surprise?

In the morning, he was sitting on Sanyukta's dining table, with her beside him, showing him the contract and where he would need to sign. Randhir signed without reading the contract, something he himself was always against.

"Alright then," Sanyukta said, piling the contract papers. "That's it."

She put the papers in a large envelope and then handed him a house key.

"You now live here," she told Randhir with a smile.

He smiled back at her, albeit a bit forcefully.

"Thanks," he said.

"You aren't familiar with Mumbai are you?" she asked him.

He shook his head.

"I can take you outside," she told him eagerly, "We'll have fun!"

Randhir looked at Sanyukta like she was out of her mind. Was she crazy? What made her think that he wanted to spend his entire day with her?

"I have plots to look at," he told Sanyukta. "I'll be busy."

She pressed her lips together, as if she was in deep thought.

"Alright then, I'll come with you to look at the plots, then we can eat together. I know some nice restaurants," she told him, sounding excited.

"It's okay," he said formally. "I can go alone."

Then he stood up and started to walk towards the door.

"B - but Randhir," she said, sounding hurt. "You're missing out on a lot of fun."

"I'm not here to have fun Sanyukta," he said coldly, without glancing back at her. "I'm here for business. That's it. Not for any personal reasons."

He felt his own heart break at his words, but he knew that what he was saying was the best for both of them... she wouldn't get her hopes up to be with him, and he could continue disassociating from her as much as he could.

Maybe, deep down... he could actually hate her if he believed it was for her own benefit, even if he didn't believe it. Even if he knew he was a jerk. Creating an illusion just made hating her so much easier.

He glanced back at her and noticed that she had tears in her eyes.

"Bye," he said coldly, and walked out of the door.

Seventeen

That night when he got back home, it was almost midnight. He deliberately stayed out as long as he could, so that he could avoid Sanyukta when he got back.

As soon as he took his shoes off and was walking towards his room, Sanyukta stepped out of her room, her arms crossed.

"Hi," she said to him softly.

He nodded at her in a formal way and took off the coat of his suit, holding it in his arms as he walked into his room. He draped the coat on a chair. As he was loosening his tie, Sanyukta entered his room.

"I'm sorry," she told him softly.

He looked at her incredulously. Why was she apologizing?

"I'm sorry for crossing my limits," she explained, "We aren't... we aren't friends or anything. We never were. I don't know why I thought that I had any reason to take you out in Mumbai."

Why was it that she made him feel so guilty for no reason at all? She just had to say her words in a certain way, and he would automatically feel terrible.

"It's not your fault," he mumbled. "Don't worry."

She walked over to him slowly.

"I really am sorry," she said to him. "I got way too excited... I thought your reasons for coming to Mumbai were something else."

Randhir looked down at the floor guiltily. How could he tell her that he had forgotten her in the last two years and had never intended to come to Mumbai for her after the initial month?

"Don't you think if that was the case I would have already been here? A long time ago?" he asked her, trying to get her to open her eyes.

"I thought maybe there were some circumstances that you fell helpless to," she explained to him.

He couldn't believe it... had Sanyukta been waiting for him to come to Mumbai for the last two years? Did she really like him that much?

"Do you have feelings for me?" Randhir asked her softly.

Idiot, he said to himself, don't ask that! You won't be able to take it if she does.

But he still asked.

"Feelings?" Sanyukta asked, caught off guard. "I just wanted to give you a chance Randhir. I don't know about feelings. I mean you're a nice guy."

That was it? He breathed a sigh of relief. That meant that she couldn't possibly be that hurt. She wasn't head over heels in love with him. It was like a weight was being lifted off his shoulders.

He stepped towards her and smiled. Now he could be a bit normal around her too.

"Let's be friends," he told her.

"Friends?" she asked him, sounding surprised.

"Mhm," he said. "Unless..."

"Unless?" she asked, her breath catching in her throat, as she took a step back, colliding with the wall behind her.

"You tell me," he said softly.

She placed her hands flat on his chest and moved them up towards his shoulders, holding them gently.

Sanyukta closed her eyes and Randhir could hear her heart beat faster as his lips moved towards hers.
