The above is maslow hierarchy of need
Every human moves to next stage in hierarchy only if his previous needs are met
Lets take case of Salim - he is a prince he has enough food, clothing, employment, property etc
But right from second pyramid he is missing a family and social stability- one day he is walihaad next day he is prince another week may be shall become walihaad etc
Sometimes if there is a great tragedy people instead of moving up the ladder fall down the pyramid again like loss of family, loss of property or grave tragedy like earth quake etc. Then they start again from first pyramid and start moving up usually. Sometimes they may fall one pyramid down like they shall be on 4th pyramid and fall to 3rd etc. Ex: when Salim loses anarkali he shall move down from pyramid 3 to pyramid 2, when he loses nur jahan he shall go from pyramid 3 to one higher pyramid 4 because he has a family who loves him a man bai who adores, cares and respect him, his kids who love and care for him. Once a man has kids its rare for him to fall down the third pyramid because children give pure love that does not change with situation so either they stay in same stage or move up. So he may lose nur jahan but his will to go higher in pyramid stays because of his small kids and his dependents like his dependent wives, his aged mothers etc. He wants to achieve for them earn for them his failure may destroy their future every man is aware of that so he does not let a love failure, a job failure to defeat him they keep trying and move up for sake ogf their kids and dependent family(especially kids). The fathers aim usually is to ensure his kids have a better life than him and usually they focus on that rather than love failure, career failure, humiliation by family and outside world (parents, sibling, relatives) etc
Salim never had the third pyramid that is love and belonging from a small age- his family was away from him, he was among adults so hardly had a friend group of his age and culture and status(mind you friends means you cannot expect a beggar to be a friend of prince from chuildhood and expect prince to behave like a king, salim's friends in war field must have been common soldiers from lower starta or at most middle class starta), since he was in war field he has no intimacy with family, he does not feel connected at agra fort and wants to go back to war as he knows only war field now. He was a child soldier and that has had a great impact on his mind and behavior for past 10 years.
Fourth pyramid - like I said when salim has not ben fulfilled second and third stage of pyramid how shall he go to 4th stage of life needs that is confidence, self esteem, respect of others, unique individual etc 5th need of maslow self actualization I do not think he shall achieve till he becomes emperor. That is when his true potential was seen where he realized all the needs of 5th stage. That is morality- he was known as adil padshah for his justice, he brought creativity when he took Mughal miniature paintings to its heights etc Though his health and age and family feuds by sons and wife never allowed him to reach the heights he may have had in him.
I have given only for Salim example but same can go for murad, daniyal, Akbar etc
Akbar had 50 years to achieve what he did. So each king cannot truly be compared as the age they become king, their health, their family atmosphere and support, their childhood upbringing, etc play very important role in achievement of potential like shown in pyramid
Now gouing by that pyramid we can analyze salim behavior to large extent why he has low self esteem, self pity, anger, hatred etc
Yes Salim was wrong in running away from scene leaving a small boy injured and never told parents. If anarkali was not there he would have died. Anarkali was also right in telling truth in court. But law is basically same for all humans and law for children and adults is different. What I feel is that making salim do hard labour in that boys house was to some extent harsh. The boy and anarkali has trespassed in salim's garden, that was a royal garden and anarkali and that boy were stealing mangoes etc from that place. When they both were not punished for stealing and entering private property of emperor I think punishing Salim like that was a bit harsh. And here the parent and judge was same Akbar. What I am saying is if Akbar and Jodha had not put fear inSalim's heart the child would have told what happened in garden to them? Many children hide their faults and crimes to parents or do more bigger crimes to hide from family in fear. Why create a situation where child is so scared that he hides from parents his crime? Even today in india majority people run off the accident spot even adults in fear.
Secondly justice should be seen as equal in eyes of criminal. Rashid Khan was forgiven for allowing the kidnapper stay in his house and risking Salim life but Salim was punished for hitting a child who was trespassing and stealing a child in his private property. That is how a small child will think. So it was Akbar and Jodha duty to explain to him that in future if he do any error to help victim or come and tell parents truth. Did the issue of hiding and lying go away for child? Noo any punishment should remove the crime not the criminal. Did Salim stop lying and hiding with parents nooo? Did he stop being scared of parents? Nooo Even today when his dad-mom, come to his room he gets scared, even today he has no braveness to go and say I love anarkali not manbai. Even today he hide and drink and take hafim. Then what is use of that punishment? A punishment should make person realize his mistake and make him stop doing that act again the act of hiding from parents. Whole world knows Salim loves anarkali his brothers, milk brothers, haider etc but parents have no idea. How come and why? Because salim is still old 7 year old salim not changed he still fears and hides from parents. So what use was that punishment.
Akbar or Jodha never once sat with salim and explained why he was punished? what was his fault? they never said once that you can come and say anything without fear to us not once.
Third Salim as a child has hardly seen parents love and affection especially Akbar. His upbringing was more military type rather than a family environment. Emphasis was always on him becoming a better king not on giving him a better childhood and love and care. It was always to make him rough and tough and a soldier never to make him a better human etc. Akbar always believed that a best emperor is a best soldier and his over all upbringing was ignored. What about values, what about studies, what about play, what about giving a protective environment in form of family etc. All that was ignored and only one sided warfare training was emphasis by Akbar. The most important thing a human should have is emotional stability and sense of being loved(second and third pyramid)
Salim does not have confidence to go and tell his parents he loves anarkali because the third pyramid of need is not fulfilled at all. And to that he has to go to 4th stage. May be once he gets the second and third pyramid that is love and belonging towards a person anarkali(or in history in 1599 nur jahan was married to ali quli) he does a bhagawat
Salim has no employment and stability- 2nd phase too one day he is walihaad and next day he goes back to prince not crown prince etc
So Salim is still in 2nd phase of needs in life he is still craving for a family who shall love him, care for him, who connect to him as a human and speak to him and treat him intimately. Only then he shall go to fourth stage in life needs. His confidence increase, fear will go, he want to achieve something in life(be next emperor as per history before he dies of addiction), he will start achieving his potential after bhagawat only. Is that not surprising that some people start achieving only once they revolt against their superior or equal partner? Yes here Salim went to achievement and individual self esteem started developing after revolt to Akbar.
But surprise of surpise many great achievers have revolted first then only achieved pyramid 4 and 5. That includes freedom fighters, scientist, business men(bill gates, ambani)
Majority of companies were started or flourished after their founders revolted, all countries got freedom after revolt by their leaders, world war was won because the leader revolted, Akbar and ashoka became great because they revolted against society or religious norms etc So all great things and human potentioan starts with revolts only usually against old norms or old leaders etc
Uff it was too long sorry if I bored you
