A proposal by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to extend the hawkers' zone in Mumbai to the posh residential area of Pali Hill has not gone down too well with the celebrity residents of the area.

Expressing grave displeasure on their behalf Rishi Kapoor says, "I am all for jobs for the hawkers of Mumbai city. But they need proper areas to function. If you put up a makeshift cart for quick lunches, the ones to benefit from that transaction would be office-goers who need to come out of work grab a bite and go back to work. This just doesn't work in a residential colony. It makes no sense to bring them into residential areas where hawking is not the mode of business transaction."

The actor sees the plan to introduce hawkers in his residential area as a vote-collecting ploy. "You want to win over their votes. But at what cost? Pali Hill is colonised by actors and other celebrities like Sanjay Dutt, Anil Ambani and Aamir Khan. If the pavements are occupied by hawkers commuters and passersby will simply stop for food and then stare at the stars. Khana bhi aur Khan bhi?" Rishi fears for the law-and-order situation. "I am not saying the hawkers would create an unsafe environment in our area. With hawkers around so many kinds of people would be swarming the streets. Why us in Pali Hill? Why don't they make Malabar Hill or Napean Sea Road a hawkers' zone?"

He points out that countries like Singapore, Malaysia and China have hawkers' markets. "These areas are specially designated for hawkers to sell their goods." On Sunday the Pali Hill residents have called for a meeting to decide a plan of action.

Rishi has voiced his disapproval and said, "Pali Hill is colonised by actors and other celebrities like Sanjay Dutt, Anil Ambani and Aamir Khan. If the pavements are occupied by hawkers, commuters and passers-by will simply stop for food and then stare at the stars. Khana bhi aur Khan bhi?"

These stars used to play simple aam aadmi in their films and built fanbase through films mocking the rich and their VIP culture.

But are themselves such elitist pricks.

Rishi is irritating. 🤢

Always grumbling, barking, snarky or boasting.

Typical grumpy old uncle.

Is it their dad's city?

Government and people will decide what to do.

WTH does he mean by khana bhi aur Khan bhi? As if people have only one work to do and that's staring at these oldies who bombard them with their botoxed faces through every channel and hoarding already!

Seems they take 'star' title too literally. Dimaag pe bhi charbi chadh gayi lagti hai.

If people want to take selfie when the 60 year old star is standing at a urinal, what else can he think of 'aam admi'?

Rishi is being an elitist here. He's just uptight and doesn't want to share his high end neighborhood with street vendors. If there is no market there, the hawkers would not ask for permit. And why does he have to worry about permit if he is convinced there is no market. Hawkers are in the business to make money. If the Pali hill area won't give them business they will eventually go away.

I love how food carts and food trucks are getting more respect in many parts of the world. Many neighborhoods vie to have good food carts close by. I think India needs to help our food hawkers get an image makeover. Perhaps an NGO can help them invest in nice trucks or carts so they don't seem shady, but more like a legitimate food business. Some of the best food in Bombay is the roadside sandwich and vada pav stalls. And who does not love a good Kolhapuri chappal or duplicate Gucci belt. 😆
