Five

The next day, when he went to class, his eyes met Sanyukta Agarwal's and he looked away immediately, feeling guilty.

She walked up to him and held a bag out.

"Your sheets," she said in a voice barely above a whisper.

"Th - thanks," he said nervously, taking the bag away from her, looking around to see if anyone noticed.

In the eyes of the college, she was still a s**t after all, and Randhir's reputation would be horribly impacted if he was caught hanging out with a s**t.

She smiled at him and turned around to go to her seat at the back of the room.

As Randhir took his seat, the girl next to him, Ishika, who he had been flirting with, trying to play with her for a few weeks now, said, "Hey."

"Hi," he said and flashed her a smile. "How are you?"

"Good... I was thinking about you," she said and blushed.

Randhir was just not interested in flirting with her today so he looked down at his open book and pretended to read, all the while trying to solve the Sanyukta mystery in his mind.

On the other side of him, Parth his best friend, came and sat down. Perhaps Parth knew something about her. Why did people call her a s**t? Why did they claim she slept around when he found out that she was a virgin?

"Parth," Randhir whispered to his friend, "You know Sanyukta Agarwal?"

"What about her?" Parth asked, looking confused.

"Why do people call her a s**t?" Randhir asked his friend.

"Oh no... Randhir, don't tell me you're going after her now!" Parth said, sounding horrified.

Randhir glared at him and said, "As if! I wouldn't go after cheap people... I just wanted to know. She's onto me."

He felt guilty as soon as he said that, but Parth looked at Randhir directly in the eye and said, "Everyone knows Randhir... everyone knows that she has slept with so many guys. She herself brags about it."

"She brags about it?" Randhir asked Parth, sounding shocked. Why would she do of such a thing? Especially when it wasn't true.

"Yes... there were rumours that she went abroad over the summer and got pregnant, but she aborted the child," Parth said in a hushed voice.

Randhir's jaw nearly dropped.

"Who said that?" he demanded, because he knew that it wasn't true. There was no way.

"You know Vidhushi, she overheard her telling Kaustuki," Parth said with a whisper.

Vidhushi and Parth were really close friends, so it was natural for Vidhushi to tell him these things. Kaustuki was Sanyukta's best friend - perhaps her only friend.

"Sanyukta said that?" Randhir asked him with disbelief.

"Yeah... I wonder why she wasn't careful about who heard. I guess she didn't want it to spread, but you know Vidhushi, she can't keep things to herself," Parth told Randhir.

Randhir glanced up at Sanyukta, who was busy writing something down in her notebook. He saw her innocence... she didn't deserve any of the rumours that were being spread about her, but he chided himself. No. He was supposed to hate her.

"Yeah... well... she probably did get pregnant. She's a s**t after all," Randhir told Parth with a heavy heart. "She tried to seduce me at the party last night."

"No way, you too?" Parth asked him, sounding surprised.

Randhir nodded.

"Randhir last night, she tried to seduce me too!" Parth told him.

"What?" he nearly yelled.

He didn't like the sound of that... and what was she even up to? What was she thinking? Was she just a desperate girl who wanted to be a s**t or something? Did she really just want attention?

"Yeah, she touched my shoulder and said that I was hot and so were my friends," Parth told Randhir, sounding confused. "She asked me to dance with her but I said no... you know, because Vidhushi wouldn't like it. But she said to allow her to sit with me, and then I told her to go away. I guess then she went to you."

Randhir remembered how they bumped into each other - was that all intentional? Was it not an accident?

"Oh..." he mumbled, hating the sound of her being after his best friend. "What a wh**e."

He glanced back up at Sanyukta, unable to believe that this was the same sweet, innocent, vulnerable girl he met last night. Something about his own assumptions just didn't seem right, but he reminded himself that he hated her... and for that, he had to believe in what he assumed.

Randhir didn't know what to believe. He didn't know why he even cared. Why did it matter to him whether she was really a s**t or not? Sure... it was true that he felt bad for what he did, but that didn't justify why he cared so much. He hated her. But why did he hate her when he could just be indifferent to her?

Soon it was lunch break, and Randhir was sitting in the canteen with Parth, a notebook open, pretending to do work. He didn't know why he couldn't focus. It was like she had taken his senses and had turned them towards her.

Vidhushi joined the two of them and Randhir closed his notebook, eagerly looking up at her, knowing that perhaps she would be able to tell him more about Sanyukta Agarwal.

"Vidhushi," Randhir said, sounding glad that she came. "Can you tell me about Sanyukta?"

Parth looked at him like he was crazy.

"I already told you Randhir," he told Randhir, but Randhir shook his head.

"I want to hear Vidhushi's version," he said adamantly.

"Why do you even care so much?" Parth asked him and Randhir hesitated - he didn't even know the answer to that.

"I don't know," Randhir told Parth. "I just find it weird that's all, that someone would brag about things like this."

"Well Randhir, if you were to listen to me, I'd tell you to stay far away from that girl," Vidhushi warned. "She's trouble. I heard so many things... I live with her and Kaustuki."

"Things like what?" Randhir urged on, trying to decode her character.

"She was pregnant over the summer... but she had an abortion," Vidhushi said. "She has a diary where she keeps a list of all the guys she slept with, and she was telling Kaustuki once that she had hit the 25 milestone."

"What?" Randhir asked, sounding outraged. "Twenty five?"

Why would she lie about that stuff? He hadn't even slept with that many girls.

"Yeah, crazy right?" Vidhushi asked him, rolling her eyes. "One she does it, then she goes around bragging about it, and doesn't care that I'm listening."

"Are... are you sure Vidhushi?" Randhir asked her, his heart still refusing to accept what she had said was true. "I mean... like you said who would brag about it here?"

"I don't know... she's weird Randhir, but I'm sure. She's also said that she stays away from boys at FITE unless they're part of the 'in' crew," Vidhushi told Randhir. "She doesn't want to sleep with people here and then never get the chance to sleep with the 'in' crew because of rumours or whatever."

But there were already rumours! That made so sense... it was so contradictory. And Randhir knew that the 'in' crew meant the crew that him and Parth were a part of.

"No wonder she tried to hit it off with both of us," Parth piped in.

"What?" Vidhushi asked, making a face. "She tried to hit it off with you two?"

Randhir nodded slowly.

"Yeah... last night she tried to make moves on both Parth and I," he explained, conveniently leaving out the fact that she had told him not to touch her.

Why would she tell him not to touch her if she was really like this? And he knew for a fact that she was a virgin... so what was wrong with her? Was she mentally ill? Why would she spread such stupid rumours about herself.

"The guts on that bitch," Vidhushi muttered angrily under her breath. "Parth did you look at her?"

"I told her I wasn't interested," Parth told Vidhushi calmly. "Don't worry I'm only yours."

Randhir looked at Vidhushi and Parth, "But what if she was lying about all this? It's a bit far-fetched don't you think?" Randhir asked them.

"Maybe," Vidhushi told Randhir. "But then that makes her weird. Why would anyone do that? Either way, she's a s**t, or an attention seeking bitch."

Randhir sighed. He didn't know why, but his heart wasn't willing to believe that this was it to her story. There had to be more.

"Why are you so fascinated anyways Randhir?" Vidhushi asked him. "I mean, why do you even care? It's her life, if she feels like spreading rumours... fake or real, why should we even bother?"

Randhir nodded.

"You're right," he said to her. "I don't care. I was just curious."

"Don't worry, you can get better than her," Vidhushi told him sternly.

"I... I know," Randhir told her in response. "I don't want to be with her... ew. I just... I wanted to know why everyone hated her. That's all."

Vidhushi looked at him and nodded, looking like she knew something was going through his mind, but Randhir put his notebook in his bag and stood up.

"I'll see you guys later, going to the library," he muttered.

"Bye," Parth said as he started walking away.

"Bye Randhir... take care of yourself," Vidhushi said after.

As he was heading out of the canteen, he bumped into someone - causing her books to fall to the ground. Upon looking up, he saw that it was Sanyukta.

Looking into her innocent dark brown eyes, he momentarily lost himself in them. He only escaped from his reverie when she muttered, "I'm sorry."

What was wrong with him? And what was wrong with her for bumping into him?
