As usual your writing is awesome.. The story is shaping up well.. Esp the second part.. Loved how you put up nandini's helplessness to walk when she sees maanik hurting himself.. Emotional scene..Precap seems interesting and looking fwd to the story unfold..You should definitely create a pm list and add me to it too :) Cant wait to read next part..
"Manik wait.", she stopped him
Manik leaned back and scanned Nandini's face, trying his best to understand what was going on in her mind.
"What happened?", he asked in a worried tone
"Why? Why Manik?"
Manik quietly diverted his head in the other direction and started to get up from the rocky road.
"Manik? Manik no. You have to answer me!"
Manik carefully secured Nandini's seat belt and closed the front passenger's door.
"Ughh...why is he so impossible!"
Nandini leaned over to his seat and grabbed the car keys, hiding them against her left thigh, as Manik walked around to the driver's seat and slid in. He quickly fastened his seatbelt and turned to face her,
"Alright Nandini, hand it over."
"Hand what over? I don't have the keys.", she lied whilst shrugging her small shoulders.
A small smirk formed on Manik's lips. Lying and Nandini was a combination which was never going to work. He quietly leaned closer to her warmth and whispered in her ears; "But I never mentioned anything about keys."
Great. Not again. She turned her blushing face to face Manik. Peeking so innocently though one eye and biting her lower lip, she presented him his bundle of keys.
Manik felt his heartbeat quicken and he could feel his heart skipping beats every few seconds. She had always been the calm of his frenzied life. Her touch did magic. Filling him with the realization of her presence in his life. Awakening every part of him to experience the true love she carried within her heart just for him. She was that love which displaced all the anger, all the pain that once resided in him from the time of his childhood. She was that spark of light which helped him rediscover himself amidst this cruel world. She was that blessing that god had sent down just for him.
"Manik? Manik? What happened?"
Her touch woke him up from the trail of thoughts that had taken a u-turn to the horrific accident which took place three years ago.
Panic once again consumed the guilty heart as he re-visited old memories. But he blinked back to reality as his eyes focused on her concerned face.
Her eyes gazing into his eyes to reassure herself that he was okay.
"Nothing baba. I'm fine"
"Are you sure?"
He smiled an assuring smile and reached up to tuck the lock of hair behind her right ear.
"You're with me, so I have nothing to worry about."
Nandini returned him with a warm smile and straightened up in her seat as he ignited the car and started driving.
It had taken them endless efforts to become a part of each other's lives and she still looked back to that moment with so much admiration and enchantment. How she had hoped for the time to just stop ticking. How she had wanted to live the rest of her life re-experiencing that beautiful moment again and again. It was all so perfect. The paradisiac beginning of their journey of togetherness. The perfect end to their exile. No room for any more grudges, misunderstandings and no fear remained of losing each other. It was a night which she had impatiently waited for so she could finally explain to him the significance of her fireflies. She would at last express the definition of love in her life; Manik.
But their happiness had been short-lived. That one sudden incident had seemed to wipe out Manik's smile forever. Of course he would smile his beautiful, small grin every now and then but Nandini knew that it just wasn't the same. His eyes never twinkled the same as they had on that night. His heart was the home to endless pain. Buckets of guilt. And she had tried so much over these last few years to make him smile that glowing smile once again. To ensure him that it wasn't his fault. That he should stop blaming himself for the unforeseen occurrence but it had been of no use.
"Nandini...we're home"
Nandini stretched a little on the spot. She didn't realise when she had fallen asleep, reliving the old memories. As she opened her eyes and peaked out the window, her eyes widened in thrill.
"It's raining?!"
"Yeh, just started pouring a while ago. I didn't want to wake you up because I wanted to see this expression of yours.", Manik replied with a little laugh.
Nandini blushed a little but was soon impatiently grabbing onto Manik to take her out in the rain.
"Manik...hurry up! I want to go outside and play."
"Nandini not again. Last time I fulfilled your wish of dancing in the rain, you got sick. Sorry. We're heading straight inside today."
"Manik please?" She begged him with her puppy eyes. A weakness she had discovered over the years. He was bound to give in now. She just knew it.
"That's cheating you know".
"Everything is fair in love and war and you Mr. Malhotra, I know love me the most." She leaned in and rubbed her nose against his nose.
Manik chuckled silently to himself and leaned in to kiss her smooth cheek. "Alright. But promise you'll dry up as soon as we get inside?"
"I promise, plus not like I can run away anywhere", Nandini winked at him.
A flash of pain crossed Manik's face and he glanced away from her face.
"Manik...I'm sorry. I didn't mean it in that way." Nandini reached out to tilt his face upwards so she could look into his eyes again.
He forced a smile on his lips and cupped her hand with his own. "I know. It's okay. Let's go out there and fulfill your wish."
Nandini's squealed a little in happiness and leaned in to hug him.
Manik held her close and absorbed every inch of her. He could feel tears forming in his eyes again but he blinked them away before they spilled onto his cheeks. She was so happy, he couldn't ruin it for her. As soon as Nandini broke the hug, Manik stepped out of the car and made his way to her side and scooped her out of her seat and into the pouring rain.
Nandini swayed her right arm through the open air, absorbing every pearl of water falling on the ground. She bent her palm to form a little bowl so she could collect the beads of rain and as soon as her palm started to overflow she splashed Manik with every drop she had collected.
Manik gasped a little from the sudden surprise but he knew it was going to come now or later.
"Nandini Murthy, you just did not do that."He tightened his grip around her body and spun her around in the open space of her porch. Nandini spread both her arms into the wet air, her head falling back in excitement, and she screamed in delight. Her laugh was echoing in the atmosphere around them and Manik couldn't help but laugh his own little chuckle. He hadn't seen her this happy for quite a few days and at that moment nothing mattered to him more. She was smiling, she was happy and so he was happy. He slowed down his ride for her but continued staring at her mesmerizing face.
He leaned down and kissed her forehead and she reached up to lock her arms around his neck.
"Thankyou. You have no idea how much that meant to me." Nandini whispered with the widest smile.
"No, thank YOU for smiling. It makes my day to know you're happy."
"Well I guess then every day should be a special day for you because you're the reason for my happiness and I get to see you every day so there never is a day when I'm unhappy."
"Alright we can continue this talk later, time to get you dried up and snuggled in bed.", he replied with a quiet laughter.
Manik carried Nandini inside the house and upstairs to her bedroom.
"What happened?", Manik paused and questioned her just as he was about to sit her on the bed.
"I can't just sit on my bed, it'll get all wet. Take me to the bathroom first and I'll change there and then you can tuck me in bed."
"But Nandini how will you manage? Look, I don't think that'll work, just let me sit you here and I'll change the bedsheet if..."
"Manik, no. I'm telling you na, just take me inside."
"But Nandini..."
"Shhh..." Nandini placed a finger over Manik's lips. "Trust me".
Manik let out a loud sigh and walked in the bathroom and sat her down on her chair that he had permanently positioned next to the shower room for her. He started to walk out of the bathroom, once he handed her her pink nightsuit but stopped at the door.
"Are you sure you'll be okay?"
Nandini nodded and smiled at him in reassurance.
He half-heartedly stepped out and shut the door behind him.
"Manik...Manik...shhh, calm down. I'm perfectly fine." Nandini placed her hands on his shoulders."
But Manik didn't pay attention, he inspected each and every inch of her hands, her arms, her feet, searching for any scratch, any wound that she could be hiding from him. It was only when he was fully convinced; he closed his eyes to breathe in a deep breath and calmed down to his normal state.
"It's not funny Nandini."
"Manik, I was just..."
He gave her no time to finish her words and scooped her up once again so effortlessly in his arms and made his way out of the bathroom. He carefully sat her down in the middle of her bed and spread the quilt over her legs to ensure she didn't catch the cold like last time. He was about to walk away from her bedside and go downstairs when Nandini grabbed his hands and pulled him back.
"I'll be back. I have a phone call to make.", he answered without turning around to face her.
"The phone call can wait. You have to get dried up first."
"Nandini, I'll be fine, don't worry..."
"Manik, don't even try and deny me. Now go and get ne a towel."
She let go of his hand and he wordlessly walked in the bathroom to grab a fresh, dry towel and returned to her side.
Nandini once again caught his hand and pulled him down to sit beside her on the soft bed. She grabbed the towel from his cold hands and started drying his dripping hair.
He couldn't help but smilingly adore her persistency when it came to him. He continued admiring her innocent beauty as she thoroughly dried his hair. When she finished, she realised a starling sight. His eyes. They were blood-red and there was another level of wetness on his face. It wasn't just drenched from the rain anymore.
"Shhh Manik. I'ts okay. I'm okay"
"Shhh...Manik...Manik...Listen to me. It's all going to be okay. We're going to make it through this. Together. I trust you."
The minute she finished uttering the last of her words, he pulled her into his jacketed arms and snuggled her in his warm scent. "Promise me Nandini. Promise me that you'll never give up." The desperation in his voice was evident. His sobs had subsided but the pain in his voice remained.
"I promise." He tightened his muscled arms around her one more time and held her for what seemed like hours.
He continued to weep his agony and she continued to absorb it all in. Never loosening her grip on him. She wanted to take it all away from him. Heal the wound that was still aching and oozing with pain even after so many years. But she knew that his love was selfish. He was selfish when it came to sharing his pain, his sorrows, his miseries. He always did that. Kept it all locked up in a dark dungeon located in the depth of his truthfully pure heart. Protecting her from his own aching.
After much contemplation, she asked him her question.
"Manik, can you do me a favour?"
"Hmmm?", he hummed with his eyes closed.
"I want you to sleep here...with me. Tonight."
