Kalki Koechlin's take on Deepika Padukone's video on women empowerment
Saturday, 4 April 2015 - 6:42am IST | Agency: dna | From the print edition

Sneha Mahadevan

Kalki Koechlin is no stranger to voicing her opinion on women's issues. The actress has always believed in talking about issues that concern women, and in the past, she performed an intense monologue, written by herself, on womanhood named 'The Truths Of Womanhood'. Last week her good friend, Deepika Padukone starred in a video - My Choice directed by Homi Adajania that spoke about women empowerment. Though she received support from the film fraternity, she also faced flak by a lot of her fans for having a convoluted view about gender equality.

When we asked Kalki for her take on the video, this is what she had to say. "I think what Deepika has spoken in the video makes sense. I do understand the counter argument too where everyone has been saying that had men said the same lines about having sex outside marriage being their choice, they would have been branded idiots or ass****s. However, we still do have a clear cut demarcation or boundary as to what men and women are supposed to adhere to. It's great that the film has brought about a lot of questioning and debate. It is very true of liberating women to make their own choices and then be responsible for them. But unfortunately, it has become a girls v/s boys debate. Women empowerment is about equality. I wish there were more men in the video along with women where both the sexes would have a say and would discuss their choices."

Exactly! Why was the video only limited to 99 women? The director is a man, the writer is a man, put some more men in the video to make it more effective and empowering.Like she said, there are different set rules for men and women in the society and just like for women, some rules are unfair for men too, which I think was brought out beautifully in Madhuri's video( men don't cry).

Completely agree with the Boys VS Girls thing that this whole new wave of feminism has become!

Too much attention being paid to a video with a good intent but bad execution.

Get. Over. It.

What would men say if they were in the video?

"Yeah sure" or "My Choice too"? 😆

It was a trainwreck of a script. It would have been a bigger mess if men were in it.

I don't know what brand of gender relations these Bolly types want to promote.

And yes men would be butchered if they had uttered the same lines. Nobody justifies this behaviour of men and even if some make compromise it is either for property or for sake of kids, not for sake of pati parmeshwar. Like Dimple had left Kaka in 80s but came back to him in final years and is now fighting over property.

Reasons behind choices are far more complex than just gender.

I think Kalki meant something along the lines of "He for She campaign" ..🤔

And i agree with her bcoz in that case the train wreck script too would have been altered to a great extent .. the msg would have sounded more heart-felt instead of coming across as very aggressive/in-your-face , bordering on man hating .. all the wrong/misplaced projection could have been avoided.. i think that would have made a great difference ..
