Chapter 2

The next morning, Zoya gathered her designs in a file and arranged them according to three wedding events that were to happen: the cocktail party, mehendi/sangeet, and the actual wedding. Asad was waiting in one of the hallways for Tanveer and their wedding planner, Zoya. Ever since he had met her, his thoughts seem to wander about her. The way her eyes spelled innocence, the way her cheeks fell in a dimple when she smiled. And her smile, it was beautiful to say the least. It had this healing sensation. Her smile seemed to make him feel better inside. Why was he thinking about her? She was a stranger he had met yesterday. Focus Asad...you are getting married, to Tanveer, he told himself. His eyes wandered to the dazzling woman that was walking towards him. Dressed in a sleeve pink, floral dress that ended just above her knees, she looked gorgeous. His eyes darted towards her long, slender legs and he felt something inside him that he had never felt before. Her hair was up in a ponytail which bounced as she walked towards him. Can someone look so beautiful with a simple dress and almost no makeup, he thought. Zoya didn't notice Asad's intense gaze on her. She was walking in her own world, enjoying the weather and the cool morning breeze. Asad broke out his trance when he heard her greet him. "Hello Zoya," he said. "Tan...I am sorry Ms. Siddiqui isn't here?" Zoya asked. "I haven't seen her since last night," Asad replied. "Would you like to see my designs till she comes," Zoya offered. Asad nodded and Zoya handed him the file. Opening the file, Asad was amazed. "You hand draw your designs?" he asked. "Yeah, I know there are computer programs for that. But, I prefer sketching them; it gives scope for so much more detail to be included," Zoya explained. Asad just smiled as he continued to look through the designs. "Wow Zoya, these are amazing," Asad told her. Zoya smiled, "thanks," she said. Just then Tanveer walked up the room with Aisha. Zoya wished Tanveer to which she just responded with a nod. Tanveer took a seat on the couch and started checking the sketches. Asad could see that Zoya was nervous when Tanveer was going through the file. "It's ok, relax," he leaned in and whispered. Zoya was surprised that he had understood what she was feeling at the moment. She just smiled at him and nodded. "Seriously Zoya, this is the best you can do?" Tanveer asked, intervening. "You don't like them?" Zoya asked sadly. "They are whatever! I want something that is magnificent, something royal for my wedding," Tanveer said as she threw the file on the floor. Zoya picked up the file, dejectedly. Zoya felt bad. She had put so much work to come up with these designs. Seeing her sulk, Asad felt his heart ache. "The designs are wonderful Tanveer, what else do you want?" he asked. "Asad, these designs are so not classy. I am getting married, Tanveer Siddiqui is getting married. So, the decorations should be top class na," she boasted. "But, I liked them," Asad said. "Come on Asad, since when did your taste become so middle class," Tanveer taunted. Zoya could see Asad stiffen up. His eyes changed colors and she could see the pain reflect in his eyes. "I am sorry you didn't like them Ms. Siddiqui. I will come up with something better," Zoya said sadly. "You better! If not, I have many wedding planners that can replace you," Tanveer said and stormed out of there. "I am sorry," Asad said turning to Zoya. "It's ok; it's not your fault. Thank you for standing up for me," Zoya said and left from there. Asad was shocked at himself. He hasn't even realized that he had stood up for Zoya, against Tanveer. He hasn't even done that for himself ever.

Zoya returned to her room and told Nama what had happened. "What does she want?" Najma asked. "I don't know, she said she wants something top class. I did my best but she didn't like it," Zoya explained. "She isn't worth your magical sketches, give her something rich, bimbo types," Najma said. "But that would look bad in this type of setting," Zoya said. "Who cares? It's her wedding, if that's what she wants then give to her," Najma said. Zoya nodded. Najma could see how upset Zoya was. She took a seat next to her sister and wrapped her arm around Zoya. "Don't worry Zoe, it will be ok," Najma comforted. "I hope so. We have to excel in this wedding. I don't want to let Mrs. Sani down. She trusted me with this job," Zoya said. "I know, and I am sure you will do awesome!" Najma said making Zoya smile.

The next day, Zoya changed the decorations and make them flashy and loud. Tanveer instantly liked them and agreed. Zoya could see that Asad did not like any of the designs that Tanveer had approved. It was weird that these two were getting married, they were like polar opposites. Well, opposites attract right, she told herself. Najma, on the other hand, wanted to bring Asad and Zoya closer. She knew that Asad was getting married. But, her sister had a spark with someone for the first time. She wasn't going to just let it go. If Allah had really planned these two to be together, then she was going to be the ignition for the fire needed. Later that day, Zoya was trying to instruct one of her workers to place the pink paper strings in a certain order. They usually used paper strings and waited till it was close to the actual date to replace them with flowers. The person was just not doing it right. "You know what Rajesh, just leave that and go check on the outside staff. I will do this myself," Zoya said frustrated. Rajesh nodded and left. Zoya climbed up on the ladder and fixed the paper string as she saw fit. She then took the lights and tried to place them with the strings too but was unsuccessful. She tried to move closer to the wall so she can reach the lights. Her feet slipped and she pulled the lights with her and fell. "Ahhh!" she yelled scared that she was going to hit the floor. Instead, she landed in someone's arms. She recognized his touch as a shiver ran through her body. Zoya quickly opened her eyes to see him. "Thank you," she said as he placed her down. "Are you ok? You should be more careful," he said. "Yeah. It was just that I was just trying to put the lights up and see if they go with the color and the background," she said. As she tried to move her arm, she realized that the lights have wrapped around her. She sulked and Asad chuckled at her. "It's not funny," she said getting angry. "Ok ok, sorry. Hold on," he said. He moved closer and she closed her eyes feeling his breath on her cheek. His arm touched her neck and she felt herself tingle under his touch. He carefully undid the wire from around her. Reaching the end, he saw that the lights were stuck in some of her hair. He turned her around and started to slowly remove the light from the strand. Zoya felt like her throat was dry and the breath inside her seemed trapped. "All done," he spoke as he moved away from her. She exhaled the air that she was holding. Why was his closeness affecting her so much? Asad too was thinking about how close they both have been just moments ago. He could hear her heartbeat getting loud and he knew that his was probably louder. Their moment for interrupted by Aisha who informed Asad that Tanveer was looking for him. As he was walking out, "Asad...thank you," she called out. He stopped and turned to face her, "no problem," he said and left.

The next morning, she stood in front of the dazzling sunrise wanting to capture the moment. In Delhi, life was too busy to enjoy moments like this. She wanted to capture this perfect moment in a painting. She was waiting for the sun to come up completely so she could finish her painting. "Boo!" some screamed at her ear. "Ahhh!" she yelled as she turned as accidentally dropped the tray of paint on the person who was responsible for her dilemma. "Asad...tum?" she said surprised. Asad was laughing at her till the colors dropped on him. Now, Zoya started laughing. His white T-shit was now a ray of colors. Her laugh sounded like jingling pearls. She was in sweat pants and a tank top, her hair was tied up in a loose bun with few fringes falling to her left forehead. The sunlight made her skin glow. Asad stood mesmerized! He has never seen someone look so beautiful. He moved closer decreasing the distance between them. Zoya was startled as his closeness. She stopped laughing and looked up at him. His hands wrapped around her waist and pulled her move closer. He took some color from her plate and then touched her cheek. She closed at her eyes at his touch. It was creating havoc inside her. They felt this aura surround them. Time stood still as they were embraced in each other's arms. Zoya felt her heart race and her palms get sweaty. She was nervous at his nearness. Suddenly, she heard Najma's voice calling out to her. They broke out of the trance and moved away from each other. They both didn't understand what they had just done. "Uh oh Zoe, you are here. I have been looking for you everywhere," Najma complained in a sleepy tone. "I was...I was just...," Zoya shuddered unable to find words. "And what happened to you guys," she said looking at Zoya and Asad. "We accidentally bumped into each other," Asad said, coming to the rescue. Zoya just nodded, not knowing what to say. "Oh...lets go and clean you up," Najma said looking at Zoya. She agreed and started to walk away. She stopped in her tracks and turned to see Asad. "What's happening to me?" they both thought as their eyes collided with each other.

Later that evening, Najma was upstairs showing Zoya color choices for the satin cloth that need to be put around the hall during the mehendi. "This one," she said putting on the wall. Zoya raised her head from the bottom of the stairs, "No Tamatar, how about that blue one?" she suggested. As they were debating through the colors, Najma saw Asad was walking towards Zoya talking on his phone. "Zoya, do one thing. Walk more that way and see from there, it might look better," Najma advised. "Really? Ok," Zoya agreed as she traced her steps back. Walking back, she suddenly collided with someone. Asad's phone went up in the air as his hands went around her waist, protectively. Her hands gripped onto his shoulder for support. As their eyes met, their hearts raced together in unison. Najma dropped the colorful cloths from the top making the atmosphere perfect. She smiled in glee as she saw Asad and Zoya lost in their own world. They looked so perfect! She thought. "Asad," Tanveer's high pitch voice from the down the hall caused them to stand up and break apart. Zoya placed her hand on her heart, trying to calm it down. "What are you doing here? And what the hell is this mess?" Tanveer asked reaching the two. "The cloths fell by accident," Zoya told her. "Clean it up, what are you waiting for," Tanveer ordered. Zoya just nodded as she started to clean the mess. Najma was coming down the stairs to help her sister when she saw that Asad was already on his knees, picking up the fabrics along with Zoya. She smiled at the scene in front of her. "Asad, what are you doing? Come, I want you to meet someone," Tanveer said. "Hold on Tanveer, I am helping Zoya," Asad said, still picking up the materials. "What? Why are you helping her?" Tanveer said getting impatient. "I said hold on," Asad firmly stated. He gathered the things and handed it over the Zoya. She smiled and thanked him. "Now, we can go," Asad said turning to Tanveer. She fumed in anger. How dare he speak to her that way? She stomped her feet and left from there.

The next day, Asad was walking out of his room when he saw Zoya playing with few kids. Her laughter echoed down the hall. She reached into the mud pot and pulled out a white ball filled with sugar syrup. She squeezed a little bit of the syrup and popped the white ball in her mouth. "Hmmm," she moaned in pleasure. Asad felt something awaken inside him hearing her. "This is wrong, I am getting married. I can't do this," he thought looking at her. He was about to leave from there when he heard her call out to him. "Did you need something?" she asked walking up to him. "No, I was just...I was just walking through," Asad said. "Would you like some rasgullas?" she offered. "No!" he almost shouted. Zoya was surprised at his reaction. "I am sorry, I am fine. Thanks," he said and quickly left from there leaving a confused a Zoya behind.

Time started to pass. As much as Asad tried to stay from Zoya, the more often he encountered her. Sometimes, destiny made them collide into each other and sometimes, Najma setup circumstances that bought them closer. In this one week, he had realized so many little things about her. The first thing was that she ran into things and people often, her attention span lasted merely for seconds. She was like a mature adult and childish kid all in one. She played hide and seek with kids, teased them for clothes. But, when it came to work, she was totally focused. It was like she was bipolar or something, he thought as a chuckle escaped him. He had come to know that when she was happy, she did her little happy dance. When she was tensed, she chewed on her pen or pencil. When she was angry, she just closed her eyes and took deep breaths counting from 1 to 10. But, he had also come to know that she was smart and very creative from her work. And, she was obviously extremely patient to deal with someone like Tanveer. He didn't understand what was wrong with him. This felt so right. Deep in his heart, he felt perfect whenever she was with him. The moments he spent with her seem to imbed in his heart and soul. The image of her laughing flashed in front of his eyes often throughout the day. But, his head told him that this was immoral. He shouldn't be doing this, then why wasn't his heart listening to his head.

One of the mornings, Zoya heard a knock on her door. She opened her eyes and tried to look at the clock that said 6:15. "Who is it so early in the morning?" she thought as she pushed the blanket away and got off the bed. She opened the door and was startled for a moment. "Aisha?" she said surprised. "I am sorry Zoya but Ms. Siddiqui wants the small gathering, like a BBQ arranged for tonight," Aisha said. "What? Tonight?" Zoya said. "Yes, and she wants these items there and want it setup perfectly," Aisha informed. Zoya took the list and nodded. She closed the door and sighed. Reading through the lists, she realized that she doesn't have many of the items mentioned in the list. She googled to see where she could get them and found that there was a market about an hour away that sells them. Zoya took a shower, changed into a pair of skinny jeans and blue kurta. Before walking out of the room, she left a note for Najma telling her where she was going and why. She was about to leave when she saw Tanveer waiting for her. "Ms. Siddiqui, Good morning," Zoya greeted. "Where were you? We are getting late," Tanveer replied. "You are coming with me?" Zoya said surprised. "Yes, I want to make sure all the preparations are done perfectly. I can't take chances, these are Abbu's special guests," Tanveer said as she hoped into the car. Zoya took a seat too and they left. The whole day passed with Zoya roaming in the hot weather. She was going from one shop to the next, trying to get everything in time. Tanveer was just sitting in the car, ordering her and Aisha around. When she returned to the wedding venue, she was starving. She was about to grab something to eat but she had her staff ask her about setup. Hours later, Zoya stood in the party dressed in a full sleeved pink party dress. Najma walked up to her, "are you ok?" she asked, worried at her sister's pale face. "Yeah, just really tired. Today was exhausting going from here to there in the market, I went crazy," Zoya complained. "Why didn't you wake me up Zoe?" Najma questioned. "I didn't want to disturb you. And I didn't think Tanveer was going to sit in the car and order me around the whole day," Zoya said. "She is such a...," Najma was talking when Zoya interrupted. "Shhh...we are at a party," Zoya reminded. "Fine! Here drink this, looks like you need it more than I do," Najma said, offering her the orange juice she was holding. Zoya smiled and took the glass from her sister. As Zoya was about to take a sip, one of the staff members walked up to them, "Zoya, Ms. Siddiqui wants to see you," she informed. Najma saw Zoya sulk. "I got it! Relax and drink the juice," Najma said and left to talk to Tanveer.

Both Zoya and Najma missed Asad who was standing behind them listening to their conversation. He felt bad for Zoya. He should tell her to relax, he thought. Zoya took one sip of the juice and felt sick to her stomach. She felt her vision get fuzzy and her legs become weak. Asad was walking towards her when he saw stumble. The glass fell from her hand to the grass. He ran and caught her in his arms, as she fell back. She closed her eyes as darkness fell over her. "Zoya," he called out as he patted her cheek but she didn't respond. "Ya Allah, is Zoya ok?" Najma said as she ran up to them. Asad quickly picked Zoya in his arms and rushed towards her room. Najma told Aisha to call a doctor. Within minutes, the doctor arrived and was examining Zoya. Najma sat next to her caressing her hair, worried out of her wits. Asad was waiting outside the room. Each passing second seemed to suck the life of him. She looked so pale and fragile when he had placed her on the bed. He felt like he couldn't breathe. He rushed out of there into the back yard. As he walking out of the party, some caught his arm. "Asad, where are you going?" his fianc asked. "Tanveer, I need some air please," Asad said. "Come on Asad, Zoya has already created a scene here. Now, you don't do anything," Tanveer hissed. "Are you serious right now? She didn't create a scene...she fainted. She god damn fainted Tanveer!" He yelled. His eyes became red with anger and he was shaking with rage. First, she had overworked Zoya the whole day and now she was complaining that she had created a scene in her perfect party. Was she not least bothered that someone has just fainted, he thought. Tanveer took a step back and looked at the man in front of him. He looked like a blazing lion. "How is that my fault? And you are yelling at me because of her?" she asked surprised. Asad didn't have anything to say. She just doesn't get it. "You know what...forget it! You are so insensitive, you don't get it," he screamed before walking out of there. Tanveer looked up to see everyone at the party staring at her. She felt her blood boil in anger. How dare he? How dare he yell at her? And that too because of some wedding planner? I will make her pay for this, she thought with fury.

So what will happen? Will Tanveer kick Zoya out? Will the marriage go through? Will Asad be brave enough to break it off? Keep reading to find out.
