Be it on big screen or small the image the depiction of any controversial topic or scene always leaves a great impact on the audience. And especially Indian television has always been melo-dramatic in terms of exaggerating an issue of social matter to an extent which makes it a cheap gimmick.
Talking about rape which is treated as a taboo in the society, our Indian soap operas have not even spared going to an extreme level by portraying such a sensitive issue in a dumb manner. Not only had this but to make the show a high voltage drama the makers use this as a weapon to get as many TRP's as they can. They cater to audience such content for sensationalism and to grab a large number of viewers.
Recently, much TRP fetching serials like Balika Vadhu and Ye Hai Mohabbatein revolved around the rape track. Instead of offering a greater opportunity to educate viewers, they use the opportunity to heighten the drama
Much TRP fetching show Ye Hai Mohabbatein played a track of Ashok (Sangram Singh) raping Mihika (Mihika Verma) as he gets furious to after knowing that Mihika tricks him into believing that she was pregnant. As Ashok asks her to get intimate with him in order to have a baby, Mihika's refusal leads to getting her raped.
