Hey everyone!

So a few of us have been very disturbed by this sudden social-campaigning used to gloss over other important issues. This is not only because of what happens to a character who is involved in the raising of such an issue only and what it does to the character sketch (Development seems to be too heavy a word for Mukti); but also because an issue such as this has been flattened and trivialised and completely decontextualised.
Here are a few points off the top of my head, and I needed to share them with people on this forum.

1. If women such as Nandini and Navya (who are more comfortable in certain clothes) suddenly have to change their appearance to make a 'feminist' point; then that point is made in terms of a vocabulary and understanding that is made and maintained by men.
Not only does it flatten the violence ( physical, emotional, mental) against women; it also dismisses the realm of 'romantic' relationships and issues like consent and reduces them only to a matter of clothing, which can be taken off and put on at any point. Then, this issue is completely isolated from many other processes that also contribute to said violence.
2. The 'campaign' was restricted to a bar, and came out of 'revenge' for one's friend. Not only was there a conflation of 'we'll teach them a lesson' and 'it's my choice'; it also completely dismissed the point that: IT WAS MUKTI's CHOICE. SHE CHOSE to do what she did. ONLY when she lost control did this became a broader 'movement'.

3. There was NO sensitivity about the terms that were thrown around: HOT? CHICKS?
Commodifying women is not helping ANYTHING even IF said women are called those things as endearment or are consenting to it. THAT makes it a matter of individual choice and shows hypocrisy on multiple levels, one of which is again: If you legitimate the use of certain terms and items of clothing, then you cannot suddenly make pass off your insults as a feminist movement, which has a certain context, which yours CLEARLY WASN'T.

4. I won't even GET into the publicity gimmick of this.

5. Ditto about the political ramifications and why certain politicians invest in certain movements and representations of women.

This is not a rant; this is me being very concerned about how not only women, but also men, and social issues are being depicted( superficially).

I am happy MTV wants to do this, but it can be done in a more nuanced way.

I STILL am a MaNan fan. This is MORE general than specific to this show, but obviously since it came from the show's portrayal, there are no clear lines.

peace

Lets talk social cause.
It's in Vogue and because awareness is all about hashtags.

What was the tag line? If a girl says no , it means no.
Hmm, lets see. Mukti willingly consented for sex with Rocky. Yes she was harassed later but they never bothered to clear the ambiguity about consent here.

Was this campaign about short clothes or s**t shaming? All I could see was they tried brushing Mukti under the carpet and trying to cover her issues by using a social cause.

Whats funny is though, Manik asks for a kiss from nandini and when she brushes him aside , he says he won't go down without getting the "thing". Clearly the No is not elaborated . I know he was not crossing the line but similarly Rocky didn't cross one with Mukti. Consent ambiguity continues.

Campaign was about girls being comfortable with their body and choices. So why did Nandini and Navya went out of their comfort zone ,what about their choices then?

Mumbai Police needs to sue Mtv.

Sunny Leone? I don't have a problem with her being the face of the campaign but what was her use , what did she say or did? I would have expected her to talk about her other profession and how that still doesn't give right to others to harrass her but what did spoke about -PARTY AND SPILITSVILLA.

So basically channel used our show to promote a reality trash tv and in a way threw a bizarre party because that show you deal with harassment . Such a disgrace to victims and all the women who go through it daily.

Why take a cause when all you wanted was an advert space on a popular show.

I love this show and the writers and it pains me to see all of their effort go down the drain for a publicity shame.

Atleast spare the crusade mission , if you don't understand it , the don't mess with it.

Party, hastag campaign , half-baked slogan shouting- thats new age socialism for you.

No sensitivity or research whatsoever.
Token activism for the sake of a 'hot' topic. (pun intended)
Execution fail on all fronts.
Cheap publicity stunt.

That was the gist of this entire farce of a 'noble cause'. And I'm being very polite with my criticism.

One of the many messages I got out of it was- Heaven help women who want to wear short skirts but don't have a powerful guy throwing a few punches to protect them, or a celebrity shouting slogans along with them.

All this in a show which I had so admired for handling issues like homosexuality and pre-marital sex with the kind of maturity and non-judgemental attitude rarely seen on desi tv.

Such development, much wow.

Thank you so much for this post
My heart is crying afer the episode, what have they done to te show and Manan in one epi

Manik was drawn to her, bcos she was dressed in short clothes and he was acting so desperate today and was following like a dog, i really found his expressions todayOTT than him being mesmerised!

Also saree is such a beautiful costume, why did they have butcher the costume to prove a point.

The epi has left a bad taste in my mouth

Bold: I totally agree with u! :( plus consent is a very ambiguous issue as it is, why complicate it further..individual choice pe rakhte, like it was during Cabir and Navya..why make it so broad when u don't get it at all. UGH. Sunny toh aise bhi aa jaati😆

It made no sense!đŸ€Ș

n it certainly wasn't any "movement" it was a revenge

first of all, this track out of no where makes no sense and of all the people, they had to choose Mukti as their victim...that gal, doesn't treat anyone outside fab5 as even human beings
secondly, their 'no means no' doesn't fit the bill here...i don't remember mukti saying no to anything here...no one called her to be bar, apprentely she chose rocky there and then called him again...ok her choice...but there was never a 'no'
hell, she didn't say no when that politician was draping all over her...she just stood there

and thirdly, their dresses for the campaign...like u said, lesser clothes doesn't mean feminism...they should be showing whatever clothes they chose, they should be respected...nandini and navya should have worn the clothes, they are comfortable in...show gals in all kinds of dresses and it shouldn't make difference...bcoz it's her choice

didn't watch today's episode...so, no opinion on anything related to today in particular
