Amidst the tens of thousands of names of monarchs that crowd the columns of history ... the name of Ashoka shines, and shines, almost alone, a star." - HG Wells ashoka 1These words of the great British historian aptly summarise the place of Ashoka in the annals of world history. For us Indians, however, the Mauryan king is more than a lone star from history: He is the apotheosis of what it is to be an Indian. His moral-philosophical edicts, handed down to us through artefacts, documents and relics, pervade the Indian consciousness. Therefore, it is only natural that any attempt at retelling the story of the ancient king should be grand. In 2001, Santosh Sivan offered us a taste of this grandeur through his cinematography in the otherwise flawed epic called Asoka'. Thus, when Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) Colors decided to dramatise the life and times of Ashoka in Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat', it set itself the challenge of recreating historical splendour without appearing over the top and cheesy like Sivan's film. Though Colors had been on the lookout for a story in the historical genre for quite some time, the work on the series began only a year and a half ago when Contiloe Productions' CEO Abhimanyu Singh pitched the idea to the channel.

i am very happy with the way they are handling the story. be it the set, the costumes, its all been done quiet tastefully. oh the movie ..though i liked shahrukh's performance ( im partial to him) , the story wasnot gripping enough.
my only sincere wish is that the serial makers should not compromise their story line for the TRP circus. i think that is the biggest factor which ruin the serials that has potential to become a memorable one.
thank you for the article! :)
