Character Sketch:
Kalpana Vishnu Nambiar: The elder daughter of Vishnu Nair 27 yrs old and Kamala Amma. The family is of a Royal lineage! Kalpana's ancestors were kings in the ancient Kerala Allepey. She was brought up as a princess in a palace with loads of pampering and love. Hence she is very stubborn at times and also hot tempered. Though she is MA in literature, She is an artist by profession. She loves to paint and is mostly locked up in her room painting and carving and sculpting. She also has learnt dance and classical music when she has been young and though the family does not like it, she goes to give dance and music performances. Painting for Art exhibitions under the name of 'Koel' and selling her work to tourists is the only income for the family. She is also a freelance writer and writes articles on saving the traditional art etc for art magazines and stories too. She writes poems however that is the only thing she does not wish to share with anyone or intend to sell them.
Kamala amma: Kalpana's mom. Also mom to 2 other children. One girl and a boy. She is a very docile lady having no power in the house. She does what her husband asks her to. She loves her family very much. She loves Vishnu even though he reduced her ancestral property to nothing and now they have become poor due to his boisterous and lavish ways of living showing off the royal lineage and never working to get paid as it is against his self respect! Kamala amma tries to grow all the vegetables in her backyard and tries her best to not to starve the children. However she sells her last bit of jewellery as she tells her children and husband for Kalpana's education in her Arts and stuff. However she has hidden her own grandmother's box of jewels which she has saved for Kalpana's wedding.
All she wants to do is see Kalpi settled but she knows that Kalpi is purposely postponing her wedding.
Vishnu Nambiar: Once A haughty man, arrogant, egoistic and a rich landlord and head of the temple trust. However now the family is in poverty due to the lavish lifestyle and huge ego which made her father sit at home and not go out searching for work! They have been selling their assets to make a living. Once the owner of a widespread property now Vishnu Nair holds only his ancestral, palatial house and some land nearby. They are not even in the condition to maintain the house these days. He does not approve of Kalpi dancing for income. He says she should do it for free as dance is a art and should not be sold to people who dont understand the true value of art! However he does not stop her as he knows in his heart that it is only her income that helps them live and educate their other children. He is very proud of her in his heart but father and daughter do not talk to each other as he feels he has failed as a father.
Prakash Nambiar: Eldest son 32 years old and yet single, who has no work and has left studies incomplete after he failed his 12th grade. He roams around the village with his friends, gets involved in fights, drinks, smokes and even gambles and tries to sneak out antic stuffs regularly from their house to sell and get some money to entertain his friends. He is exact replica of his father who believes in living life like a King and not work for it! However he loves his sisters and cannot stand anyone talk about them. He too hates Kalpi dancing on the stage for cultural shows and getting paid for it. However he attends every show and creates a fight if anyone talks about his sister. He is proud of her too as she being the princess of the house still has to work for them. He was engaged to be married but because of his nature the girl finally cancelled the wedding and got married to someone better off financially!
Urvashi alias Kili - Kalpi's younger sister. Fondly called as Kili (little birdie who keeps chirping and flying around) She is just 13 years old and loves her family and is in awe of her sister and believes a prince charming will come one day to take her sister away on a big boat! She loves to talk and keeps running and playing all day. She loves to read the stories written by her sister and pesters her everyday to read out a chapter freshly written.
She is not bothered about their poverty as she lives in a fairyworld where everyone has to be nice and there is no evil.
Premchandran Nair: He is a distant cousin to Kalpana from her father's side and is engaged to her. He is very ambitious and wants to make a cult movie and become a hollywood director one day! He has learnt film making and is struggling to get a job as a director. though he has had many opportunities to work under some great directors he could never stick around as his ego would come in between while taking instructions from them. According to him no one in India knows anything about filmmaking. He is searching for a perfect sponsor who is an idiot and does not interfere in his filmmaking but is only interested in producing it! He loves only himself but likes Kalpana and wants to marry her as he knows she is very talented and writes great stories and want to direct one of her stories into a movie. A no nonsense guy! He is not a romantic and very practical!
Raghavendra Kuruppathu: He is a very shrewd and successful businessman in Dubai. Owner of several hypermarkets in Dubai and Mumbai! He is also the owner of various jewellery stores and owner of a watch company that has made a mark in the market as a wanted brand. He is not very educated as he had been to school only upto 8th grade. Later he tutored privately to learn hindi, English and even completed his graduation in commerce privately. Raghav is considered as stingy and a very cunning man. His temper is well known and his employees are scared of him. He is cynical at times if things dont get done his way. He has learnt the hard way and finds it difficult to trust anyone easily!
Samar Roy- He is Raghava's best friend and he met him in Dubai during Raghav's struggling days and has helped him manage his business. He was the one to help Raghav complete his graduation pushing him to finish his studies and is Raghav's friend, philosopher and guide! He loves Raghav as his own brother.
