A beautiful journey that started came to an end last month. As I look back there are many questions that come in my mind. In this post I have tried to list them down.
Sony TV - As a channel you have right to decide which show will stay which will be shown exit door but I have a couple of questions for you. The initial promotions before the show went on air was done well however after few weeks the promos stopped airing except for few tweets/status once in a while (which were edits made out of pictures released by F32 or news articles or tweets by PH/Actor) there was no promotion from your end. Infact the last promo aired was for 17th November. Can we know why there was not even a single promo post the show went for time change?
The show had time slot changed in November first week and there was no information or notice given regarding it except in the promos. You could informed the viewers before episodes started, during breaks or after it ended that show will be aired at new time slot. So many had no idea about the time change and thought it has been pulled off air. How do you except the viewers to watch the show unless promos are shown frequently so they knew about time change and that show was still very much on air.
Your banner on twitter mentioned the show would air from Mon-Thu and on your page Mon-Fri. Infact one of the tweet from this year stated show timings Mon-Thu 10.30 pm. That not a small error and shows how the channel themselves are not aware of what days/time show is telecasted. Next time when you put up banners make sure the details are written properly.
In the final week the show timings was changed again viewers were not notified not even the makers knew the timing. It aired at 7.30 pm on Sony HD and 2 am on Sony SD. I want to know who do you think will be awake and watch the episode telecast at 2 am? Not everybody gets Sony HD and lot of crowd watches show on Sony SD. Many thought the show ended. However the online viewers who are on facebook, twitter and other social networking sites got to know about the timings and watched it online.
You had a time slot of 8 pm empty with no new shows running you could have used that for a week and telecast the episodes that time however you decided not to do so. And honestly I don't get why there are different schedule on Sony HD and Sony SD. Why there are no repeats of shows? Shouldn't you give equal importance to all shows running on your channel? The shows on rival channel are given repeat telecast 1 or 2 times in a day and 3 or 4 times if we count repeat at night with entire week episodes of some shows being shown on weekend.
You need to rework on your programming strategy. I would suggest when you bring in a new show on your channel give it six months. This way the makers will be aware that their show will run for fix number of episodes and can plan the tracks that are to be brought at various points from early stages instead of changing tracks/story overnight. Repeats should be shown atleast two times during day morning and afternoon. Promos needs to be shown frequently during prime time especially during shows that fetch good TRP/TVR and has loyal audience. Another thing that can be done is a 2-5 minutes short sneak peak of the first episode/week can be shown before any start of every show during prime time on the day show is being launched or from a week before. This can also be done for existing shows a quick recap of 2 minutes for particular week or promo/teaser. This way it will reach more audience.
4 Lions - The first impression is very important. When article was released mentioning show's concept and title comparisons began, let me be honest here when I saw the first promo it did reminded me of ZGH. If given a choice I would pick second promo (tent) over first.
Editing was done poorly with no proper/incomplete ending given for SaAz scenes. For example: The coffee-tea mug exchange at office wish it had ended with SaAz looking at each other realizing their mugs got exchanged. A bride disappearing from a room full of guests and the coal which had to made audience feel bad and sympathize with Arzoo but the editing made it look like joke rather than something serious because of the editing.
Lack of importance given to leads with episodes where Sahir or SaAz were shown for a minute or two. I am not saying episodes should have been full of Sahir or SaAz scenes as other characters are also important and had role to play in story but the importance should have been given equally so it looked balanced. For example: When Sahir sees Arzoo with Zaki and later questions himself seemed rushed when it was supposed to be slow and gradual. The reason for this was there was not much interaction between the leads or scenes (airplane, fashion show, office/house meet, collect designs, question about Sarfaraz-Not counting lucknow since they did not had face to face interactions) that time thus it was hard to register this sudden change.
Lack of consistency and switch over from one scene to other was another point. For example: SaAz going to Panchgani for a business meeting then from jungle they are back to Mumbai in next episode. It felt like an episode got missed in between. In initial flashback scene it was shown during the accident Zeenat was wearing black saree which was later changed to firozi color suit.
The story was about Sahir and Arzoo how they these two contrasting individuals becoming Humsafars but the changes in track made it looked messed up. A lot of importance was given to other tracks instead of major ones like Sahir's past-Zeenat, his promise and deal. There was so much that could have been done with it.
Though the show ended there are many questions that are left unanswered. Everything was kept at stake for deal and it got called off so what happens to Saiyaara and Niyamat house? What Anam did years back with Zeenat? Her connection with the man who kidnapped Zeenat? Reasons for Sahir eating burn toasts, not eating mangoes, eating sweets only on day of Eid, going to meet Zeenat every Thursday, not driving car, not liking rains, the talks about moon so on.
With all that being said though the journey of Humsafars was short it will be cherished by fans. Many still hope the show is brought back with season 2 or maybe a new story retaining the leads on a different channel due to the way Sony treats their shows.
MBS Team - Wish you luck. Eventhough I am disappointed with Humsafars being pulled off air it's not fault of makers/actors. I remember MBS was suppose to go on floor around same time Humsafars did. Hope the channel does not treat you the way they did to Humsafars and their other shows.
