Someone who doesn't look the part and with whom the viewers will have difficulty identifying will not work.
Why do you even expect Fawad Khan should get the same respect as an Indian actor? They have their own country in which to get that respect, let them get it there.

Yes, there is a certain ideal that is sought after, but it has nothing to do with what people look like in North or West India. Rather, I think it has more to do with colonialism, and the ideal of being european.

Europeans have dominated global culture and economy for the past few centuries, and nearly all non-european cultures tend to strive for a beauty based on it. In Iran, the biggest cosmetic fix-up are getting smaller nose, in China/Japan, larger eyes, and lighter skin in India.

The issue is also looking at the average viewer, and their accessibility to understanding films and interacting with them. Right now, moveis tend to follow very simple plots. Anything deviating from the norm is quite risky for producers - which includes say having a dark skinned hero. Of course, this will change but not right now.

As India status in the world grows, and as the general population becomes more educated, people will become aware and open - such beauty ideals will be challenged. I mean, they are already starting to be challenged but just not fast enough.

i would like to add to this that most viewers are not critics. they do not see cinema as an art where someone's vision is coming to life. that is a more niche audience. for those they do not mind who takes the role and where they come from if they justify the character of the film. the actor's background would be negligible here. their looks etc. can be used to enhance the story. if it fits, it fits and they get a critically acclaimed movie and maybe even a decent one too.

now most movies are visual experiences and rely heavily on aesthetics. people want to see a good looking Jodi (even on tv it is the same issue) , an easy entertaining story and maybe like me lots of realistic action and thriller (but also with a good story). for them putting in someone who does not fit their specific idea of aesthetics (why those particularly bias exist is a whole different other debate) does not draw their key audience and therefore they will not use them. if the audience shrugged off such movies by not going to them then the director's who cater to the box office would begin to change their ways to appeal to them. that does not look like it will end though.
as for equality between men and women. well that is still a long race to be won in so many areas and it will be the most difficult thing to abolish. i have always maintained the only difference between men and women is at the biological level. men and women are equally capable of doing pretty much the same things (minus the biological processes) yet years of gender bias have yet to eradicate the inequality that persists.
i do not know how it is decided how much an actor should get paid but i am guessing like football - a actor in demand will be paid more men or women. for a man - who i assume is taken more seriously and i know i have committed a very gross negligent thing by assuming as i do not have the facts but let's go on with it - who is a notable actor, losing them will supposedly affect the movie more while a female actor who negotiates too much will be scrapped in favour of someone else who will accept less to be seen on the screen as their roles are not exactly going to be defining. this however like i said is an assumption, a possible hypothetical reasoning and probably wrong. it does not cover the real situation - which i do not know - and i am sure there are directors there who would pay their actors equally.

just see the disparity..only 4 out of 20 top earning celebrities in india are females.
Check the same list for international celebrities and there is at least a comparable no. of them.

I dont know which leading actor has ever played a supporting role opposite a female lead in a heroine-centric movie.

If the established actresses stop doing those roles, there will be new girls that would be more than happy to take the role so it probably won't work.

But that will certainly force the makers to add something for the heroine of the movie to do.
