Does segregation still exist in Bollywood?

This might be a controversial subject, but I am open to the challenge. Bollywood still has a long way to go to treat men and women equally. There are still discrepancies in pay and equality. We have Hrithik making over 20 crores per movie. Kitty Kat makes less than 10 per movie. And also what about South Indians and Pakistanis who want to make it in Bollywood? People like Fawad Khan are the butt of jokes. He will never be given the same respect as a Ranbir. And what happened to Madhavan? He is not given many movies because more lighter actors are preferred? Sad to say, these are many examples of segregation between sexes and races. I hope this topic doesn't go in the wrong direction. But please post and share your opinion on this. 😊 😊

What does your 'Kitty Kat' do to deserve 10 per movie?

South Indians usually look different than West/ North Indians. Most Hindi movie stories are based in Mumbai or somewhere in North India. The viewers of Hindi movies are mostly West/ North Indians and they have their own idea of what someone from a certain region should look like and moreover what a hero should look like. Someone who doesn't look the part and with whom the viewers will have difficulty identifying will not work.

Why do you even expect Fawad Khan should get the same respect as an Indian actor? They have their own country in which to get that respect, let them get it there.

Shanti, What you say is probably true. Equality is not there. But unfortunately that is the way of human mind. In how many homes, parents treat all their children equally? There is favoritism in a home itself. In that case, how can we expect equality in institutions? Of course, it is upto a human being to do well and come up to the top taking God's help.

Your question about why 'Kitty Kat' doesnt get paid 20 per movie, is not really the actual matter of contention in my opinion, if equality is what you are seeking. Movie stars are paid according to their ability of carrying a movie on their own, where they are so popular and can churn out such stellar performances, that people will watch that movie for the performance of that actor/ actress. Maybe the movie industry doesn't have such faith on your 'Kitty Kat'.

That's a pretty simple explanation, I think the real question should be, why Bollywood doesn't have more women centric movies or movies where the heroine has the major part or atleast equal part in the scheme of things compared to the hero. That is the real reason for disparity in pay between male and female actors in Hindi film industry. Bollywood has a long way to go when it comes to giving substantial roles to its heroines. Even if I disregard Hollywood and look at Indian cinema, I can confidently say that Bengali movies in the 1950s used to have more women centric movies and meatier roles for the heroines compared to Bollywood of 2015, that's how much lagging Bollywood is when it comes to substantial roles for heroines. Nowadays Bollywood is making movies where the female protagonist is the lead character, but it's a recent trend. If the trend sustains and becomes successful, you'll see these actresses, who pull off such women centric movies with success, being paid equal amount as the male actors.

Cant say of the rest,but i very strongly feel that if the leading heroines of the industry entirely stop playing supporting roles,getting paired up with the male lead to act just as an eye candy,only then there might be some equality.

I dont know which leading actor has ever played a supporting role opposite a female lead in a heroine-centric movie.

IMini, Rishi Kapoor was an actor who played in a good number of woman-centric movies and yet he has carved out fame for himself.

It' not just Bollywood, but the entire world's film industry is gender or in some form biased! It really comes down to what sells and what does not! And one of the biggest reason is due to "media", with their powerful influence on shaping the perceptions of vase audiences, the media can play a key role in gender equality cause they have such influence which comes with responsibility...

equally. Equality is not seen in all professions. There is discrimination

out there. 😊
