If I have to define my thoughts about this show in a statement, it would be : CONFUSING.
Yes, you heard it right. This show is really confusing from the characterizations to the execution. Everything. But yet, there was a simplicity that drew me to it in the initial episodes, especially & once in a while nowadays.

The surprising & the good

1. The subtle ways in which small issues were given a new perspective & highlighted the importance of a respect.

Eg. Vihaan ditching the girl to spend time with Arushi in a mall. I never thought it was a big deal & most shows would totally ignore this & make into some comic issue or it will be dissed altogether. But the seven mothers took this seriously & emphasised how disrespectful it would be to a girl.

Eg. Priyanka slapping that male dancer & telling him to respect a woman & not to live on her money which she makes out of dancing cheaply.

Eg. Mini emphasising on the need for a woman to be strong & to be able to tackle a man even physically without being scared.

All in all, the mothers came across as strong, dignified women. Such a refreshing change.

2. Arushi/Vihaan as a couple
I appreciate & love that Vihaan's rich identity wasn't dragged. He hesitated a bit, but then once he set his mind on it, he had the guts to tell her the truth. Showed him as a honourable & sincere man. Arushi refused to be his friend upon knowing the truth & walked away. This could have been a typical, annoying scene but I love the way the makers had both these characters explore the meaning of friendship by discussing about friendship with their elders. Vihaan with his grandmother & Arushi with her mother. And there, both apologised & became friends again. Love the way their relationship progressed from friendship, to much more :)

Oh, and I got to say they look gorgeous together. Ravish/Mugdha should seriously hook up.
#ShipperFeels especially since they appear to be such good friends off-screen.

3. Arushi's bond with her step-mother, Millie & grandfather
OH the only sane people in that house.
Very heart-warming. Nice to see that a step-mother isn't presented as always cruel & mean. I love that Kasturi seems to have a fighting spirit about her. She may appear as a meek, defenseless woman who is always shedding tears, but she does have the guts to fight against Arushi's dad for Arushi.

Millie is also very sweet & understanding. LOVE how she hit off with Vihaan from the very start. I was very touched by that little moment during Arhaan's marriage when she selflessly gave her money to her father & received the shoes in return. AWW moment when she wiped those shoes for Vihaan to put his feet in. I hope they show more of her even in the future :)

Dadaji is AWESOME. Because where words fall short, he has the guts & strength to use his fists. Big plus point. I just hope he doesn't die in the future. Because if he does, poor Millie & Kasturi would be tortured.

4. The mothers' selecting Arushi despite finding out about her family
Again, something that pleasantly surprised & impressed me. Without Vihaan revealing his relationship with Arushi, he was able to convince them. And that the mothers' were mature & insightful enough to select Arushi no matter how her family was. That they were able to recognise the goodness in her & put it aside & not judge her for her background. Loved them for thisšŸ‘

The bad which is currently outweighing the good

1. EXECUTION

Tracks/characters/situations could be handled better. Special mention -

Gattu track. And what was the point of his character? So that we can see Vihaan in heroic avatar saving Arushi? Dumbest track in this show which dragged on for so long. Also Vihaan not being able to contact for days was plain dumb. Isn't he the CEO of Vatsala group? Can't he hire an investigator to find out? Or can't he use other means? Someone who is smart enough to view Arushi's presentation through his computer while sitting in his office without her finding out (that gave me such stalker feels btwšŸ˜†) could surely do better.

Arushi impressing the seven mother-in-laws. What was the need for that? They were clearly jumping at every woman they saw, without even finding out about them. Then why was Arushi made to go through so many tests, that too when all 7 of them liked her? This was plain weird. And also, who in the world asks a girl outrightly about her marriage, invites her to their house, interviews her, without even consulting her parents? And that too when Arushi didn't even know Vihaan? This whole process was just weird.

Oh, and one incident that stuck out. Mini scolding Arushi when a man was running away with her bag. How was it even Arushi's carelessness? The thief was fast & smart enough to just snatch it. That's why they say that a woman is another woman's enemy. This was just uncalled for, on Mini's part. Big let down.

2. Characterizations

The bonding between the mothers' should be explored more (beyond their worry for Vihaan's marriage which was endearing only to a certain point). These women have all gone through so much hurt & pain & no I don't expect them to sit & weep all day. I like that they have moved on & are happy. But still shouldn't there be subtle hints thrown in highlighting their loneliness or sensitivity rather than the CVs handling it on a track by track basis.

And biggest flaw comes with the revelation that Arushi/Vihaan loved each other before marriage. Yes, it is normal & absolutely justified for them to be hurt that Vihaan lied to them. But it is no way justified for them to be hurt because it was a love marriage, not arranged. I expected more from these women who have gone through broken marriages & lots of betrayal etc to at least be sensitive to understand that it is Vihaan's marriage & that he should be given some choice. Quite a contrast to the way the mothers' love for Vihaan was presented at the start. They were protective but they gave him space. Unlike now, where their love is getting stifling.

Biggest issue - Is it important for every freaking hindi serial to show a man choosing between his family & wife? Why? I expected more from this show.

At one moment, the mothers' come across as really liberal & progressive when they allow Vihaan to actually go for a drive with Arushi right after marriage while they make arrangements at home & the other moment, they expect him to pick between Arushi & them. Again, quite a contrast to the initial characterizations of the mothers, who placed a woman's respect above everything else.

Not sure how long I will stick with this show at the rate they are going. It's quite a feat that I'm still continuing to watch this show because it is getting close to becoming a saas-bahu drama, a genre that I absolutely hate.

Sorry for the long rant. Just had to let it out. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Cheers,
Samridhi

Well I Agree With You In Everything Apart From The Need Of Gattu Track Thing

I Think That Gattu Track Was Needed :-) I Mean Aarushi Was Not Ready To Look At Vihaan As More Then A Friend So I Feel Gattu's Presence Was Needed For Aarushi To Realize What An Amazing Life Partner Vihaan Can Be and How Much She Needs Him :-)

I second that too...before that track she was 'best frnz' types...but as soon as he entered her life...she was like "kaash mujhe tum jaisa jeevan saathi milta vihaan" and " maine bhagwan se hamesha tum jaisa hi jeevansaathi maanga tha" ...she realized what he meant to her 😳 ā¤ļø

Hi Samridhi!

First off - fabulous post! You took the words right out of my mouth! You've clearly had more patience than I for this show - I catch it when I can but i was SEVERELY turned off the day Vihaan declared "can't marry Arushi till all the mom's approve/agree" I lost a lot of respect for him that day.

Satrangi Sasural - I'm trying to understand the premise or concept of this show. Yes I get that Vihaan a relatively unconventional upbringing where by he was raised by 7 women - all of whom he treats equally as a mother figure. That in itself was nice to see - though technically speaking in many joint families all the aunts/uncles become parent figures for the kids of the household - hence barima- choti-ma etc as titles - however I digress.

Ok so we have a household of 7 women all of whom dote on the sole child - Vihaan. I like how they didn't drag the back stories too much of how all the mom's came together and their respective experiences with men/marriage. Just as you mentioned - they did a good job of highlighting the personalities - Tai-ma the religious anchor, Mini-Ma - the youngest of all and into fitness etc - lovely. Besides Maasi-Ma and Daadi-Ma i don't see any of the other women involved in the family business (that's fair not everyone needs too/wants too/has to work) but how do they spend their time? Narmada does charity work - the old age home and all - but the others? It would be nice to explore those angles also - Bua-ma apparently had a thing for dance but she gave that up - not clear why...

What exactly is the concept of Saatrangi Saasural? Is it to highlight that in a male dominated society 7 women can single handedly raise a sensible, caring, earnest human being? Is the premise that a new bride who is already nervous/apprehensive of the fearsome "mother in law" up for the challenge of appeasing not 1 but 7 MIL? If so what is the role of the husband - how supportive is he and how does he toe the line between son and husband?

My biggest issue with the show is what I put in bold and underlined from your post - Vihaan and Arushi's "mission mother" and appeasing all the moms. Granted the moms are over protective and all but Vihaan being an honest and sincere guy - if he falls in love why can't he just tell his moms - Ive found someone of my choice - this is who I'd like to be with. Narmadas dialogue yesterday "ur no different from those children who don't care for their parents wishes and marry someone of their own choice" WHY is this such a negative thing??? Why is finding someone on your own and expressing your desire to be with them viewed so negatively?? I get that children want to please their parents and make them happy etc but at the same time shouldn't parents be receptive and understanding enough to trust their children to make decisions for themselves? If they have a reason to be hesitant or reluctant they can share that but at the end of the day it should be the child's decision. I can't stand this concept of parents controlling or forcing their views/wants on their children with complete disregard for the children's desire.

Vihaan is totally at fault here - he should not have lied about his relationship with Arushi and staged this "arranged" marriage. With that said I think the mom's are partly to blame coz they smothered him so much that he felt this overwhelming need to make everyone happy. All said and done the mothers had no right to behave the way they did - not listening to what Vihaan had to say - blaming Arushi for everything - that's just too much and inconsistent with their liberal/progressive/sensitive manner of handling issues as shown before.

@skar1984
Thank you for reading my post & replying. I wasn't expecting any reply after I realised how long it was.

Firstly, I marathoned the show last week so it wasn't exactly patience. But yeah I had the privilege of skipping repetitive scenes of characters like Gattu, Arushi's father & brother. That definitely made things a lot easier.

Regarding Vihaan wanting Arushi to impress his seven mums - Objectively, I didn't like it as well, because I feel that there is no need for Arushi to like classical music like Priyanka does, or pray like one of the mums. She is an individual & she should be worthy of marriage to Vihaan because she is a nice human being who respects elders, & not because she shares the same interests as the mums. This is a classic case of objectifying women. But in this show, I was still willing to give this the benefit of the doubt. Because

1. Arushi already possessed those qualities the women were looking for. And what Vihaan made her to do was technically an elaborate display of what she already had. Except for her liking cooking & classical music, which was fake.

2. Vihaan is like the typical Indian telly woman. He is an idealist. He wants to please everyone & wishes love, luck, peace for the entire world. Given his personality, he clearly dislikes confrontations & fails to see that you can't get the best of two worlds. Which is why I felt like his behaviour was justified.

You know thats why I find the show confusing because I, too, fail to understand what this show is really about. Is it about AV's love story & how they, as a couple, manage to remain sane & happy in a household with 7 dominating women? Or is it a show about striking that fine balance between managing relationships in a joint family, & yet keeping everybody happy? I would like to think its the latter. But the show has definitely failed in that department, without Arushi even entering the sasural. Ask me why. Because the CVs have clearly steered of from the initial characters we were introduced to. The mothers' sensitivity & maturity have flown out of the window. Now they come across as women who just want to control Vihaan & want him to do as he pleases. What fine balance is there to strike? I can understand their anger at Vihaan hiding about his love. But they seem more stuck up about AV having a love marriage rather than an arranged marriage, which is so weird. Especially after how Arushi convinced Dadi for marriage & promised to keep the family re-united.That couldn't have been scripted. Clearly, the mothers' like her so why so much issue now that you find out that your son already knew her.

This show is seriously starting to lose me. Honestly, even Ravish/Mugdha's amazing chemistry can't keep me hooked if this saas bahu drama continues.

Thank you for reading my long post & replying :)

I understand that Gattu was the catalyst for Arushi to understand her feelings for Vihaan. What I have a problem with was the execution of this track & the very character of Gattu. What was the need for all this stupid fake engagement & Gattu kidnapping her etc. And the worst was Arushi silently agreeing to all this & then crying. What happened to the strong girl who can't stand abuse? They could have created a much more realistic Gattu. Like a normal guy. In real life, how many of us have to choose between a hero & a villain? Most of the time, we have to choose between 2 normal people. And Arushi choosing Vihaan over a sweet & nice Gattu would have been more impactful in emphasising that she loves Vihaan, not just because he was nice. But because she felt something with him. Something she couldn't feel with another nice guy.

That was a great post! šŸ‘ You've written down my own thoughts very nicely :))šŸ˜† Agree with you on almost every point!
Don't remind me of that Gattu track. I nearly quit the show because of it 🤢

As for the mothers, I'm not surprised by their reactions. It is prretttyyy much in line with their past behaviour šŸ˜† During the post-mall scenes (which I hated), outwardly they were harping on about the izzat of the girl and how painful it must have been for the girl to be tricked like that, but from certain things they ranted, I honestly felt this is what they were saying that day - "You are our golden child. Your qualities are no less than those of a God because WE have raised you You are supposed to be the epitome of truth and honesty and goodness and righteousness. You are not allowed to make mistakes like an ordinary mortal. And if you so much as utter a LIE😲, then you are insulting our upbringing and destroying our souls šŸ˜šŸ˜†" They easily forgave the girl who was cheating the company, citing their empathy for her condition. But the truth is that they can forgive anyone and anything and be rational as long as Vihaan is not involved in the "crime/mistake/lie". As soon as he comes into the picture, their obsessive love and pride come into play. They need counselling... all of them 🄱

Really hope this show doesn't deteriorate into a saas bahu drama. I loathe those kind of tracks and I'm a very impatient viewer

But I have some kind of funny faith that the show will not fall that badly. Coz even in the middle of crappy tracks, there are these moments or scenes of breathtaking beauty and brilliance. And from what I've seen in this show until now, depressing tracks don't usually last for long in SS. Sweetness and laughter return quite quickly. So I'm going to hope that this sad track will also end soon and pave way for at least a relatively brighter and happier phase. Wishful thinking maybe šŸ˜† but I really really want SS to be different and beautiful... because I can't get enough of Mugdha and Ravish šŸ˜³šŸ˜†šŸ˜† I love Mugs, and now I love Ravish too, and I love both of them together on screen and off screen and ...well, you get the gist šŸ˜†

i totally agree,i am fast loosing interest in this show.
I think that the mother's reaction to vihan and Arushi truth was over the top and what they are asking him to do is a direct contridiction to what they stands for. they are asking Vihan to do what his father has done to his mother, i did not expect this from them.
this was the turning point for me, these woman who were abandon by their husband for different reason is asking their son to abandon his wife because he love her, i am lost and confuse.
