Based on the current ICC world ranking, Australia ranks no. 1 and India is at No. 2 and rest of the 8 team that deserves to go in the quarter final are highlighted in red. Now comparing lower ranking team with higher ranking team doesn't make sense to me ofcourse lowering ranking team would like to perform well and defeat higher ranking like Ireland did with WI, but expecting lower ranking team to win all the matches is putting too much pressure on such team.

But isnt it like school exams, if someone ranks 1 in a class, then they are expected to do well. I made this post because I saw so many analyst comparing teams with each other. I mean one should not compare team at first place. But if there is comparison then look at the ranking before comparing

ICC rankings become pretty baseless after the top 2-3. For example right now Sri Lanka is ranked higher than New Zealand. But Sri Lanka is as bad as Pakistan at the moment and New Zealand can give a very strong fight to India and Australia.

Especially in the lower spectrum rankings don't matter much because the teams are almost equally bad. West Indies, Pakistan, Sri lanka, England, Ireland and Zimbabwe can beat each other if they have a good day.

But isnt ranking based average win or loss and not on current form or home ground benefits? If the matches were in sub continent may be New zealand will be weak ?

Too many factors involved in rankings... but to simplify... a side plays the best on the day will win.
That's the beauty of Cricket.. its a team game unlike any others... coz its a team game of individual performances. 2-3 players can change the fate of the game.

And as we Indians love Maths and stats, Cricket has zillions of them. Still crossing that winning line is the ultimate goal.

Go India, don't give it back!

But the team must be winning consistently and thats why their rank is higher, isnt it ? so going by that law I feel team with higher are expected to do well, there can be some off day but overall higher ranking means consistent performance

Yes, consistency means higher ranking. But in huge tournament like WC, its wont matter much as what part of the world its been played. NZ wud never be fav. if its other parts of world... and so on.

Also, in KO stages, anything can happen.

Herez something abt All Blacks- NZ Rugby t
Map of nations best results, excluding nations which unsuccessfully participated in qualifying tournaments.
The All Blacks have played a total of 43 matches in the seven Rugby World Cup tournaments. They were the only team who had made it to all the semi-finals at the world cup between 1987 and 2003. They are also the only team never to have lost a pool game and to have always qualified in first place from every group. New Zealand has won the tournament twice, in 1987 and 2011 both of which they had hosteeam's records.

So, the point is AB have been on no.1 spot for major parts of 3 decades but only WC twice in that time.

So, on perf. so far.. the fav. r
Aus
NZ,
Ind
SA

in that order.

Aus wud be nearly impossible to beat Aus in final at MCG for any team, so I just hope they r knocked in semi. 😉
