DIl main pyaar bahut hai magar

Dikhana hai mushkil

Apnon se dard apna

Chupana bhi hai mushkil

Ek raah kathin hai saame mere

Jo chuni maine nahi

Magar iss raah se mur ke

Apni dagar pe jaane hai mushkil

niyati ne diya hai ek nishaan,

karma, dharma ka rakhna hai maan

In bade bade shabdon Mein uljha hoon main

khud ko suljhana bhi hai mushkil

Shamshan ke ghat pe, Jalti chitaon Ki aanch main

Jeeta jee Mara Aur Mar mar ke jiya hoon main

Khoon se laal hain haath mere

Iss laal rang ke daag KO mitana bhi hai mushkil

Arshi,

Aur kitne hunar hain aapke? So touching and so true.

Only point that eludes me, why does Rudra say

Khoon se laal hain haath mere

Iss laal rang ke daag KO mitana bhi hai mushkil ?

That would be the blood of his enemies, and surely, unlike his Daadi,he is all for just retribution? Why then is he trying to do a Lady Macbeth: Not all the perfumes of Araby will wash this blood from my little hand !

When these words appeared on paper, they were followed by two visions - one of Maimui's death and the other of khoye Paye pande.

While Rudra may be a Rakshak, till now he has a Rishta with death!

Wherever he goes, death - voilent, tragic, unnatural death follows - from that explosion on the bridge when shiva was captured that killed so many innocents I am sure, to the whole of khoye paye pande's family, to Maimui's gruesome death or Udiya babas torturous one, Rudra has been a kind of messenger of death!

While to an evil force, like balivesh, killing of an innocent will be simply a way to removing a hurdle in their way, and killing of the enemy a victory, for a good man, like Rudra, every death that he is ditrextly or indirectly responsible for, will be a paap that has stained his hands.

That's why I always think of Rudra as a man with blood on his hands, because he feels cursed by all the death and destruction that follows him wherever he goes!

I do not think of him as Lady Macbeth no, more like Samrat Ashoka - who after the yudh is over, will mourn at the lives that were lost, and the price of pain and suffering that was paid to win!

I also think of him a little like Arjuna, who will not want to choose between apnon ki raksha, ha dharma ki raksha... A reluctant warrior

so, Rudra has blood on his hands, because he is a good man, and hence every bloodshed, whether done by him or not, whether of a friend or foe, will leave the splatter on his hands...

He may be a a saviour in the bigger scheme of things, he is also a messenger of death... and I think, once the war is over, Rudra will not rejoice that he has saved the lives of millions by preventing amrit from falling into wrong hands, he will mourn the hundreds who died because of him!

Very eloquent, my dear Arshi, and beautifully argued.

But as for the part I have put in bold, if every general were to think like that, the good would win no wars and evil would flourish unchecked. I think this kind of emotional escapism is all right for private individuals, not for those who hold the fate of millions in their hands. They cannot afford such self indulgence.

I can understand a kind of persisting guilt complex in Rudra re: the deaths of his loved ones, but why should he feel guilty for the death of Pandey, or indeed of his family? It was not as though he killed them, and how does he hold himself responsible, even indirectly, for their deaths?

If one extends this argument, it would have to include the death of Animesh as well, and those of Balivesh and eventually of the worst of them all, Naanu as well. If Rudra is going to mourn the deaths of all those he kills in the mahayuddh, beginning with the 'Veshes, I am afraid I do not condone that at all.

I was not comparing Rudra to Lady Macbeth, who never regretted anything she had ever done, only that it had failed, but simply drawing a "blood on the hands" parallel. As for Asoka, he had his epiphany very conveniently after he had conquered all that there was to conquer, and he could afford to adopt ahimsa! Plus, his attack on Kalinga was an unprovoked war, one of pure conquest for the expansion of the empire. Now, once he adopted ahimsa, it was all well till he was alive, but then his enemies began to nibble away at the edges of the empire, and soon made deeper inroads as well. And in a century, the greatest empire India has ever seen was gone, and the worst sufferers were the people.

No, Arshi, I loved your poem, and your very moving explanation as well, but as I have tried to explain above, I cannot come on board for the latter. I would kill a Balivesh or a Pandey or Naanu with no more sense of guilt than I would in killing a cockroach, and so should Rudra be. And after listening to him promising dire revenge on all those who had destroyed his family, I do not think he will be so irredeemably pacifist either, thank God!
