Explanation

A noble one I am

The Black family is considered noble

Though dark as dark can be

Phineas was an ideal Black, with the ideal beliefs and mentality, so he was 'dark as dark can be' or 'black as black can be'

I have led the most important place to be

He was headmaster at Hogwarts, and Hogwarts undoubtedly is the most important place to be, as every young witch and wizard learns there only.

I was a change, the only one for long,

He was the first Slytherin headmaster, and before Snape, the only one

Not too friendly, but I was a helping hand,

His portrait was always rude, and passed snide comments, but he directly or indirectly helped the trio on Dumbledore and Snape's order.

Now guess, who I am...
