its a defense system against extreme emotional pain, a let out when the person wont share the emotional pain , he/she will resort to physical harm that will take his/her mind off the extreme emotional pain that he/she is going through and will provide a relief for some time because the mind will be diverted towards the physical pain caused by the physical harm and hence the emotional suffering stops for a while, and he/she feels a bit of control

self harm blunts the emotional pain , it serves the purpose of drugs, the emotional pain is due to repressed issues possibly from childhood, negative emotions feelings that hadnt been shared or discussed due to strict parental upbringing or not so understanding parents

this emotional pain doesnt let her/him to live and hence the self harm or the physical outlet besides alleviating the emotional pain by diverting towards physical , also brings that person alive for a short span, feel something for a while besides the constant nagging of the emotional pain and issues

the person usually needs psychiatric help or spiritual help to heal
