"Students, this is Prince Balarama and this is Prince Krsna of Mathura. They have come all the way here to Avantika to study here. They are your new classmates. You can take them around the ashrama and explain its rules and regulations. Who will volunteer for this task?"
Sudama's hand shot up in the air. "Me, Gurudev!"
"Very well, Sudama. You may take them around the ashrama." Sandipani smiled, for he knew who Sudama really was.
Sudama smilingly guided Krsna and Balarama around the ashrama. He, of course, did not know his reality, so they were quite new to him.
"So, princes Krsna and Balarama, I am Sudama! For the next ten years or so, I'll be guiding you in any way possible! Let's start with the kitchen, shall we?" He licked his lips, thinking of the delicious foods that Gurumaata prepared in the kitchen...
They grinned at each other and followed Sudama inside the kitchen.[/quote]

Part 35

Panchal's annexation--Akroor visits Hastinapur--Jarasandh's invasion

Dron then asked for his Gurudakshina. He refused every gift that was offered to him, and asked for the kingdom of Panchal instead. He said, "Drupad, the king of Panchal, was my classmate at the gurukul of Sage Bhardwaj, my father. We were very close friends, and he had promised me a half of his kingdom when he became the king. But, when amidst great poverty, unable to give my son even a glass of milk a day, I approached him, but he refused to acknowledge his promise; he inflicted a great insult on me, saying that only a king can be a king's friend. I want you to conquer his kingdom and bring him to me alive. I think, by the knowledge I have bestowed upon you, you should be easily be able to give what I want."

Duryodhan, his hundred brothers, Karna and Ashwatthama attacked Panchal with the army of Hastinapur but they were defeated. Then the Pandavas led by Arjun defeated Drupad and brought him before Dron. The very sight of Dron reminded Drupad of his misdeeds and and he stood with his head bowed. Dron spoke nonchalantly, "So Drupad, as far as I remember, you had told me that only a king can be a king's friend. So, I acquired a kingdom, on the strength of my students, but unfortunately you lost your kingdom. However, I prefer your friendship to your kingdom. So, I give you a half of my kingdom to lift you to my status. Go, now, and mark out the territories you want. I think I'll let you have your capital, Kampilya, so keep your markings to the neighbourhood of the city. Release him Arjun." Dron forgave Drupad, but the latter made up his mind to take revenge for the insult inflicted upon him by the former.

Krishna and Balraam used to sit around the fire while Devaki and Vasudev used to tell them of their relatives. The brothers were always eager know about their relatives and kept interrupting Vasudev with questions about where they stayed, what they did, what their natures were etc. One such day Vasudev told them about his sister Kunti, married to King Pandu. He said, "But unfortunately, the King died soon after Pritha gave birth to his sons. But I must say she is very courageous to have fought on like that with five sons, three of her own and two of Madri, Pandu's other wife who immolated herself on Pandu's pyre. She now stays with Pandu's elder brother, Dhritarashtra." Krishna sat up straight, "Dhritarashtra ? That blind king with a hundred sons ? So does that mean the talented Pandav brothers are actually our cousins ?"
"Yes, son."
"But as far as I have heard that the Pandavs are not being treated very well there."
Devaki nodded, "Yes, son. But can't you just look into the matter ? I'm sure you will be able to help them ! You know, it was Pritha who had sent that green uttariya for you, remember, the one that you liked very much ? I think I'll put it away for your marriage."
"Yes, obviously I do remember and I'll definitely do my best to help them but couldn't you just keep marriage away from me ? I mean, first find a bride for Dau, and then plan mine."

Next day Krishna visited Akroor's house with Balraam and Uddhav, a cousin of theirs. Akroor welcomed them with a glad heart. Krishna told him to go to Hastinapur and find out about the actual state of the Pandavs. On their way back, Krishna said to Uddhav, "Brother, I've thinking of a very important thing that is, I haven't sent a letter to Braj for a long time. So, if you do not have any problem, can you go there and deliver my message to the people of Braj ? And you know the Gopis, I heard, have almost lost their mind, now only a true Sage, like you, can save them. So, can you please go and tell them what all you have studied about the futility of mortal life and etc. ?" Uddhav was very happy that Krishna had offered this great opportunity to him, and he was too glad to accept it. "So, I'll write out a letter tonight, and you can leave for Braj tomorrow. Is it fine by you?" said Krishna. Between long days of slowly putting the pieces of the difficult puzzle together, Krishna finally was able to spare a night which he spent sleepless, remembering the sweet and simple life that he had led in Braj amidst a loving family and caring friends.

In Hastinapur, Akroor delivered the good wishes of King Ugrasen and the others at Mathura to Dhritarashtra, Bheeshm and Kunti. He spoke with Kunti and found out about her fear and insecurities as she stayed amidst the hostile Kauravs and the uneasy royal family.Kunti also told Akroor of her hope that someday Krishna would come and free them of their dependent life. Akroor came to know from Vidur about all the attempts of Duryodhan to get rid of the Pandavs. Before leaving Akroor warned Dhritarashtra, "Sir, you were appointed as a regent of King Pandu, but unfortunately you forgot your position, and unjustly usurped the throne of Yudhishthir, just after the untimely demise of the King. You are drawing away from the path of righteousness, and you are not even aware of that. I have seen the difference in your love towards your sons and your brother's. If you do not amend your ways soon, then mark my words, O King, there will soon be a great war between the princes, in which the Pandavs will obviously be victorious as they have always led a life of dharma." Saying thus, Akroor returned to Mathura and related to Krishna all the information he had gathered. Krishna was immersed in a deep thought, "Uncle, send a word to Lord Vidur, in secret, to keep a close watch on Duryodhan and Shakuni. If I'm not wrong, then, one of these days, they will try their most dangerous trick. Tell him that I want the Pandavs alive, in case there is any attack on them." A soldier came in and reminded him that a seemingly madman, closely resembling Prince Uddhav was waiting to meet him.

No sooner had Krishna entered the room, than he started laughing. The 'madman' was indeed Uddhav. His hair was disheveled, his clothes were torn and he was covered in dust. He was humming a tune and swaying back and forth even as he embraced Krishna. Krishna held him straight and said, "Brother, I had thought Gopis will teach you to learn a little less and love a little more, but tell me, what actually had you told them, that they have made such a great show of you ? And yes, don't tell me you drank whatever they gave you ? They used to put a lot of certain things in the drinks they offered me." Uddhav stood up and twirling around the room he sang, "They've taught me to love ! Radha has taught me to love ! Lalita has taught me to love ! Maiya has taught me to love ! Sridama has taught me to love ! They've taught me to love !" Krishna was content, though he spoke in an agitated tone, "Stop it, brother ! How can someone teach one to love ? That's impossible !"
"You stop Madhav ! I know you have taught them to love, and you had instructed them to teach me to love ! I know everything." Krishna lovingly pushed Uddhav out of the room saying, "You indeed know everything, now go and get a bath. No one is willing to reciprocate your love right now."

Meanwhile King Jarasandh's daughters Asti and Prapti, had complained to their father about Krishna who had killed their husband Kans. Enraged, the King of Magadh, vowed to destroy the Yadavs. He assorted all his army and headed for Mathura. Krishna was thinking of methods he could use in the upcoming war, when two beautiful chariots decked with mighty weapons sent by the Gods, for the use of Krishna and Balraam, appeared in front of him. He sent Balraam to fight Jarasandh while he followed with a small portion of the army.

Jarasandh looked at the two princes with amazement. He whispered to his charioteer, "Am I to fight these kids ? They are fit to be beckoned close and pampered with sweets !" Krishna overheard Jarasandh's comment am retaliated, "Am I to fight with this old man ? He should be walking around with a stick ! What is he doing here, in the battlefield ?" Jarasandh growled, "Show your might instead of fluency !" Saying thus he surrounded the small army, intending to kill Krishna. Krishna nonchalantly shot arrows all around him. Even Balraam had to bend down to save himself from his arrows. "KANHA ! What do you think you are doing ? I guess you are fighting against Jarasandh and not against-"
"So sorry Dau ! Didn't see you !" Krishna shrieked as he saw Balraam advancing towards him with his mace, "DAU ! Jarasandh, not me !"

Within minutes the vast army of Jarasandh was wiped off. Krishna stopped Balraam, who was about to capture Jarasandh and said, "Dau, let him go ! Why bother with an old man ?". Krishna and Balraam were lifted up into the air as soon as they entered the city, and were carried to their palace by the rejoicing people. But the King did not accept defeat so easily. He attacked Mathura seventeen times, and each time the army was wiped out while Jarasandh had to flee amidst great humiliation.
