Pongal at Kaliyanoor Part 4

Anjali gets up and switches on the mini torch light from her cell phone. She carefully scans the room and walks slowly around the room. Malliga is deep in sleep. Kanakku's daughter is not on her bed. Sampoornam is also missing. On the gents' side, Prakash is sleeping under medication; next to him Kanakku is snoring heavily. Suresh is not to be seen.

As Anjali is walking around the hall, she can hear the jingling sound of anklets. She has recently begun to read vampire and ghost stories in her school library. Her heart beat racing she calls out to her mother feebly, "aa..am ...mmaa..."

Just then the power comes. She sees Sampoornam sitting on the bench with her legs folded up. Her face is very pale. Anjali then sees her sisters Sathya and Dharani sitting squeezed in the patthaayam - a storage area on the wall - fear written all over their face.

"What happened?"

Sampoornam and her elder daughters point towards the muttram area.

Anjali bursts out into a laughter which sounds so noisy in the middle of the night. There in the muttram area is a family of mice.

Her laughter wakes up Mallika and her husband. They quickly assess the situation and show their experience in trapping and disposal of the little family quickly. The back door opens and in walks Kiruba, Kanakku's daughter. She is taken aback to see all the people awake. "Kiruba, where did you go?"

"Our cow Lakshmi was making strange sounds and I was checking on her."

Anjali is a little skeptical and feels that Kiruba is hiding something.

The lights are switched off and everyone gets back to her or his bed. Eventually everyone falls asleep except Anjali who keeps thinking about Kiruba. After about half hour or so, the door opens noiselessly and Anjali sees the silhouette of Suresh sneeking into the house and making his way to the bed.

Morning it is bhogi pongal, when they clear out old things from the house and bring in new ones. The house is cleaned, decorated. Anjali and Dharani do the dusting of the house while Sathya helps Kiruba to mop the mud floor with gobar water. Sampoornam and Mallika are as usual busy in the kitchen. The smell of payasam and vadai from the kitchen is inviting. Through out the day, Anjali keeps teasing Sathya about the previous night and playfully threatens to tell Prakash about it, but Sathya pleads her, "ye please di , avar kitta sollaadha... appuram ennai kindal pannitte iruppaar... veeraanganai, sooraanganai nu..."

Prakash and Suresh do not interact with each other as if they are thickest of friends, but maintain a dignified and cordial relationship. They go to the local shop near the temple and buy the items required for the next day pooja. They also cycle to the adjacent town to buy electrical items etc. The day passes after a heavy brunch for all except Dharani who is fasting and also keeping a mouna vridham.

In the evening, they all once again go back to the temple and late in the evening there is 'poo midhi' or walking on fire arranged in the temple and Dharani participates in it. Suresh has earlier tried persuading her not to exert herself in these activities, but she had been firm. When Sampoornam also supports her and does the prarthanai herself, Suresh leaves the matter. For Kanakku and his family, this is an yearly affair. Dharani faints later, because of an empty stomach. Suresh carries her home, gives her juice first and makes her eat her dinner next.

It is 9pm. Kanakku has arranged for charpoys - cots made of rope - in the adjacent house. So Mallika and Sampoornam move to the next house, having had a hectic day, sleep off immediately. Kanakku has already gone to the next village because of some personal work and is expected back only in the morning.

Prakash and Suresh show their expertise in electrical work and fix a bulb outside the house so that the four young ladies have enough lighting to draw the rangoli patterns and colour them with colour powders. Prakash and Suresh help in giving encouraging words and of course the colour packets. Work, fun and friendly chatting makes it enjoyable and memorable. By the time it is 10.30 pm, half of the narrow street is filled with kolams. They retire for the night. Before that Sathya gives Prakash his medicines.

Dharani falls on her bed commenting to the amusement of all, "Even if lightening falls on me, I will not be able to get up."

A partial repeat of the previous night happens - Anjali and her dream, squeaky sounds and of course the power cut. No moon light either.

Anjali gets up. Her cell phone has no charge. Dharani is, true to words, in her deepest sleep of exhaustion. Anjali walks in the direction of the patthaiyam and calls out, "Akka..."

Sathya comes down from the patthaiyam and holds Anjali's hand and they move slowly towards the muttram area for some moon light. Just then the power comes. The door opens at the same time and in walks Kiruba and Suresh. Kiruba looks ashen faced and Suresh is seen holding her hand.

Sathya - "Suresh, enga poittu vareenga, what happened to Kiruba?"

Suresh - "A bull tried to attack Kiruba; that is why she is disturbed."

Sathya - "Why did you go out now, Kiruba?"

Kiruba - "After making rangoli, I forgot to bring my cell phone from the thinnai, which is why I went out."

While Sathya concentrates on consoling Kiruba, Anjali glares at Suresh. Suresh switches off the light and goes off to sleep.

Anjali has seen a lot of movies and serials and hence her mind is very alert doing lot of calculations that she finds it difficult to sleep.

Pongal at Kaliyanoor part 5 Concluding Part

Sankranthi morning:

On the open back side of the house, Mallika puts a kolam of a chariot. She places the mud stove on top it and prepares the pongal in a mud pot. Kanakku has earlier come back. Prakash and Suresh are wearing the new dhoti and shirt gifted earlier by Sampoornam. Sampoornam has also gifted her daughters and Kiruba with simple but colourful cotton sarees with zari. As the pongal over flows the pot, the women make the kulavi' sound- lubulubulubu' much to the merriment of Prakash and Suresh.

They offer prayers to the Sun God. After the pooja they have sakkarai pongal, ven pongal, mochai paruppu kootu, vadai etc... in nuni vaazhai elai (plantain leaves) inside the house.

Since it is their last day at the village, all the young people go out strolling to the small village fair. Kiruba tries to strike up a conversation with Anjali, but Anjali is distracted and replies in mono syllables. Prakash and Sathya are lost in their own world. Anjali sees the child like excitement of Dharani. She is holding on to Suresh with one hand and a sugarcane piece in another hand. Dharani is biting the cane and showing that her teeth are very strong. Her joyful gait is unmistakable. Anjali has tried hard from the time Dharani got up in the morning, but has been unsuccessful in finding the opportune moment. She has wanted to share with Dharani her suspicions about Suresh.

They reach the village square. Dharani wants a small plastic pp (adhanga nadaswaram 😆 ). Suresh obliges. But surprisingly all want to play the tiny instrument including the mega serious characters Prakash and Sathya. Sometimes it is good to let out the child in us. It can do wonders to relieving stress and improve the inner strength.

As they wander around the fair looking at the various stalls, Anjali sees Kiruba walking in the direction of Suresh and Suresh patting her shoulder and calming her down. Anjali decides this as the right time, she calls out to Dharani and shows this. Sathya and Prakash who are also nearby look in the direction of Suresh.

"Dharani, Suresh mama is not right... something is wrong... he is hiding something from you."

As usual Dharani wants an elaboration.

"What are you saying, Anjali?"

"There is something going on between Suresh and Kiruba."

The moment Anjali says this, Dharani delivers the loudest slap on Anjali's face.

"Stupid girl, not another word from your dirty mouth about my mama."

Even Sathya and Prakash are stunned. While they silently look at each other, their mind voices speak.

Prakash - 'Even at times we have doubted each other's intentions and accused each other.'

Sathya - 'Suresh is lucky to have such a wonderful wife. Look at her trust.'

In real voices Sathya and Prakash continue their conversation,

Sathya - "Anjali enna bhoodham kilapudhu?'

Prakash -"I may not have liked Suresh, but he is not of a loose character. I can vouch for him."

Sathya smiles at her husband fondly for his positive opinion about Suresh.

As they all walk towards Suresh and Kiruba, a man suddenly hits Suresh who falls down. Soon he is surrounded by another two men.

Prakash immediately rushes to Suresh's aid and helps him get up. As their hands are joined together, the speaker in the fair blares the song - "irandu kaigal naangaanaal, iruvarukke thaan edhirkaalam... pagaivargale odungal puligal irandu varuginrana..." ( serious a kadhai ezhuthi ezhuthi girikku aluppaaiducchu 😃 )

Prakash to Suresh - "Is this the bull you were talking about yesterday night, Suresh?"

Suresh - "Yes"

Anjali feels bad about misunderstanding Suresh. She didn't realize Prakash was also awake at that time. Wasn't he supposed to be sleeping under medication?

A little rewind to the time before Anjali gets up from her dream the previous night.

Sathya sits up suddenly as a mouse runs over. She quickly darts to the patthaaiyam and sits with her legs up when she feels a heavy breathing behind her. Her heart beat racing she opens her mouth to scream. But before that, a hand covers her mouth and Prakash whispers in her ear, "Bayapadaadhe... naan thaan."

Their conversation continues in whispers.

Sathya - "Adichu potta madiri thoonguveenga? Innikku enna aacchu?"

Prakash - "I took the medicines late, innum thookam varalai."

Sathya- "Adhu sari, but what are you doing here?"

Prakash - "Indha pathaayaathai sutthi parka vandhen."

Sathya -"Indha iruttulaiya? Unmaiyai sollunga..."

Prakash - "Some rodent ran over me."

Sathya s body shakes in silent laughter, "Prakash puli illaiya... eli kooda illaiya?"

Prakash also laughs embarrassingly, "aama nee yen vandhe?"

Sathya - "adhu vandhu... adhu vandhu... "

Prakash - "Eliyaar thaan unnaiyum inga thorathi vittaara? Aaha namakkulla enna porutham!"

Sathya -"Unga kitta solven nu nethu poora Anjali ennai kindal adichitte irundha... ippo ava kitta naan poi sonna enna aagum?"

Sathya hears Anjali's sound and she immediately silences Prakash with her fingers. She gets down and walks away with Anjali. But with the arrival of Suresh and Kiruba, nobody noticed the absence of Prakash, who had quietly observed everything from the patthaayam.

Back to the present.

Before the inaindha kaigal could do a fight sequence, Dharani rushes to the man and hits him on the head with her sugarcane stick.

"Ennoda mamavaiya adiche?"

Before she can do more harm to the villain bull's head, his family takes him away after apologizing to Suresh. It is Anjali's turn to apologize to Dharani and Suresh. Sampoornam sheds tears of happiness and gives her blessings to all them.

It is time to say good bye. Kanakku and Mallika wave a teary eyed goodbye.

Suresh to Kiruba - "Eppa venumnaalum indha annan veedu unakkaaga thirandhu irukkum, Kiruba."

Prakash to Kiruba - "Indha annavaiyum marakkaadha Kiruba."

They all board the local town bus to Walajabad. Angerndhu adutha bus pudicchu... back to routine, Chennai. Chennai awaits their arrival for kaanum pongal where everybody goes to the beach and where Sathya is going to be lost and Prakash searching for her will be another story.
