It should not be a must . If the girl's parents are willing to give , they should . Dowry shouldnt be a forced one .

My blood boils when someone starts justifying dowry. I will try my best to speak to the point, but if I don't, I am sorry, please understand, this issue gets under my skin.

A. I believe in gender equality.

B. I don't need to know the history and geography of dowry to justify it.

So, the whole funda of dowry is twisted. Why is dowry given? To bribe the groom's side? If the girl's side gives dowry, shouldn't the guy's side give dowry too? If the girl's family is GIVING their daughter, isn't the boy's side also GIVING THEIR SON?

And what financial stability are you talking about? Is it fair that the girl's family bear the responsibility of her marital life also because they gave birth to her? Shouldn't the boy's family be contributing to this so called stability because according to tradition which I abhor, man is the bread winner? Husbands should be supported by their families to fulfil their traditional responsibility of feeding the family.

And, let me remind you that, dowry is DEMANDED by the boy's family. How do they know or find out how much money is required for financial stability?

Dowry sucks... It promotes male chauvinism. People commit suicide/ are murdered because of this piece of garbage infiltrating our minds and society.
