John Abraham to play Arjun opposite Bipasha Basu in Rituparno Ghosh's Draupadi, despite it being a woman-centric film

Together again: Bipasha Basu and John Abraham

Several people in the industry must be assuming that Rituparno Ghosh's magnum opus, Draupadi (which was announced a while back), has been shelved. But buzz is that the National award-winning director has signed John Abraham to play the role of Arjun in his film based on the epic Mahabharat.

The Rituparno-John association would have begun with Sahib Biwi Ghulam (to be produced by Pritish Nandy Communications), which has been put on hold thanks to the off-screen rivalry between John and co-star Salman Khan.

Now, Rituparno has gone ahead and signed Abraham to play one of the Pandavas in Draupadi. To be produced by Sa Re Ga Ma, the film has Bipasha as Draupadi and might also have Jaya Bachchan in a pivotal role.

A source close to the production house reveals, "John has never worked in a mythological film, but he is sure Ritu will extract a good performance from him. After working with Deepa Mehta in Water, John is keen on working with award-winning directors. He will act in at least one parallel cinematic venture a year."

For his body

Though Rituparno wanted John for this role because of his chiselled body, John requested Ritu to develop the script and give a narration before signing on the dotted line.

John sure is excited about his role in the ace director's film. In spite of it being a woman-centric film, John is happy with his character. "He has recently signed the film and a proper announcement will be made as soon as they are ready with the final cast," says our source.

The film, unlike commercial ventures having gaudy costumes and too much melodrama, would be more on the lines of Peter Brook's Mahabharat.

The budget of the film will be Rs 8 crore, which is by far the costliest film made by Ghosh. Ritu is working on the outdoor schedule, and the film will open in Ladakh. Both Rituparno Ghosh and John Abraham were unavailable for comment.

hehe yeah me 2 but whats it about i mean ib ehard its a famous story are thye in love in the story?
