Malaika Arora Khan's designer Rick Roy on item numbers: "Item songs these days are all t*ts and ass!"

I got in touch with the renowned designer to get some exclusive inside dope Malaika Arora Khan's style for her item number Fashion Mujhpe Khatam in Dolly Ki Doli!
Here is what I found out...
So Malaika isn't wearing a ghaghra in this song. What was your reference point for styling her?
Ghaghras are so done to death! We don't do what everybody else does...I create styles not typical clothes. Plus, Malaika Arora Khan gave me all the liberty to set a new benchmark so there was no way I was making her wear a cliched ghaghra!
Tell me a little about your relationship with Malaika.
She has been my mentor even before I started working. She taught me how to do things, everything about clothes, all that I do now. She has 110 percent faith in what I make for her. You know every student has a favourite teacher in school, she is like that teacher I am constantly trying to impress!
Did she or Arbaaz Khan give you a brief as to how Pop Ragini has to look in the item number?
I don't like to call that track an item number. It's better to call it a special song. Secondly, as I said Malla (Malaika) has complete faith in what I come up with for her. She just told me create something different that she has never worn before and Arbaaz too didn't give me a straitjacket brief as to how Ragini needs to look. I visualised the clothes for the song on Malla and made some sketches, and they loved it. All I had in mind while designing was that the outfit has to look super-sexy and be in sync with the rustic feel of the song.

Was it a little difficult to work with no reference point?
Of course not! I sat with Malla and she said, "Listen! Do anything that you have not done before. Make something outstanding! Look at colours that haven't been used in previous songs," so I picked up colours that haven't been done before. All the freedom given by Malla and Arbaaz is exhilarating but at the same time it puts pressure on me too And I guess that is what drives me to create the best outfits! I sketched a skirt for the song with both Arbaaz and Malla liked but I wasn't to happy with it. Both of them kept telling me that I have done a great job but I pushed myself a little harder to make something better. And you can see the result in the song!
So how would you say that Pop Ragini is different from any other item girl?
Because she is! When you watch Dolly Ki Doli you'll see that the song fits in the context and it isn't just some random person popping in. Fashion Mujhpe is not just another weird item number. Plus, Malaika has done it with such class, she is sexy and sensual. The song never becomes vulgar or tacky. I think Malla knows how to draw the fine line between tacky and sexy.
What is your idea of an item number?
Item songs these days are all tits and ass! That is not my idea of an item number. When you watch Fashion Mujhpe Khatam you'll see what my idea is.
There have been quite a few item numbers in the recent past like Yaar Na Miley from Kick, Ghaghra from Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani. Which look was your favourite?
I think Pop Ragini's look is most unique. So, I'll have to say that i like it best!
Are there any particular actors you wish to work with?
Well, there is a long list of directors I'd love to work with rather than actors.
