I was wondering : do you think a person that is religious is selfish?

I mean, all the good you do is for yourself, your doing it so when you die you go to heaven and all, etc. My friend was wondering about it soo ...

& now i'm just curious to what other people think... what do you think?

religion isn't selfish; people are selfish. Religious people need not be selfish...some people use religion for their own selfish motives; others take lesson from it, and apply it to life, making it better for themselves and for others.

Well. In a way we are selfish, but I believe I was also taught that whatever you do has an effect on your family or loved ones too.
For me, I pray because it makes me feel good. I am not afraid of dying. I feel secured by saying his name.

You worded it simple but your post is something to contemplate on. I would say as adults we are religious may be because we are scared of the consequences of not being religious. We are religious because we want to incline on something to give us sanity at the time of grief.

This reminded me of our DM's Debate championship V where I was one of the judges and the topic was 'Do Ends Justify the Means?' If the end is noble and the means are justified………..😊

Interesting topic. Please refrain from bringing any particular religion into it and lets talk about the concept of religion or spirituality as a whole.

A religious person itsnt selfish because he or she is religous. people in general are selfish creatures. Is the rich businessman selfish for wanting to earn more while so many people in the world are living in poverty? Is the mother who looks after her child while there are so many orphans selfish? Most people would say no. Similarly, the religious person isnt selfish. He or she is trying to do their best to worship god and hopefully earn a place in heaven. If they were praying to god to only let them into heaven and kick others out or if they were preventing others from worshipping, they would be considered selfish. By being religious, they arent stopping a less/non religious person from worshipping. Religion gives people an escape from the world...it is a comfort zone where one can connect with god and free ones' self from worldly issues

Religion is a man-made belief system which ensures that your "soul" (also called as "self") is liberated/made one with a diety/placed into heaven or hell.

Humans are selfish by nature. Everything we do satisfies our own needs be it directly or indirectly.

So yes, the idea of following a religion is completely selfish.

As Maya pointed out, the question arises about whether selfishness is necessarily a BAD thing? The answer? Not necessarily. What is wrong with being happy as long as you are not making anyone else unhappy? What is wrong with being selfish as long as you are "utilitarian" about it?

Religion itself is never selfish because the purpose of religion is to make a man considerate/empathizing/accomodating/do good for others..And when you live for others, you are not selfish

Well they say you reap what you sow, right? We are made to believe if we do good karma then there is a better life after. So sometimes we do think of this.

However, its a foundation in that we learn to respect one another and through good deeds we become better as a person. Nowadays school kids do so much volunteer work here, even go to third world countries during the summer. The main reason is that they get very good points on their grade sheets when they leave high school. However, in doing volunteering, I learnt compassion and respect of people and their culture etc. that I did not have before. I would listen to my elders but it would come out of one ear.

So in the end I think its good for humanity. 😛

living beings by their veri nature are selfish, religion infact mitigates that behavior by making them God fearing and thus with less of spite towards other fellow beings.....😊
